  1. Yes, but that is difficult to find (on CD at least), as is Equipoise from 1978. All I have is Blues for the Viet Cong from 1969. 😪
  2. +1 There aren't enough Cowell trio recordings of that vintage. I like his later (Steeplechase, etc.) recordings just fine, but would have liked more earlier trios.
  3. If you like that, don't sleep on the Ten to Two Blues reissue with Goykovich and a Tete Montoliu trio. I got both, and the latter is really strong.
  4. Page isn't loading for me right now. Greatly enjoyed track 1, a tune I recognize (but can't name offhand) and that's on several recordings I own. No idea of the performers, but deserves research. The next two tunes made less of an impression. Can't say more until the page comes back.
  5. These Takagi boxes have been marked down to more reasonable levels at DG: I got the first one (at higher price) some time ago and enjoy/recommend it. Passed (and continue to) on the second (mostly duets) because the 3d disc of 3 is solo bass.
  6. So I took Extensions into the studio, where I have my Nitty Gritty cleaner set up. I was about to clean it, when I decided that instead, I wanted to hear Tyner's Sama Layuca. That's the key moment. Have to rack your brains re. what you did just then. My own tendency would be to set the album aside in some random place that seemed clever at the time (maybe due to thinking about playing it after Sama Layuca), and then forget about it. Probably some side table or shelf fairly close to either the Nitty Gritty or the turntable.
  7. +1 Yeah, I also missed that earlier, by fence-sitting on my first order.
  8. Oh, all right...I missed the boat on some, but added the Tchicai and 2 of the $8.99 non-Freedom Muzak reissues: Tete Montoliu Recordano A Line and Eddie Costa Quintet. A bunch of straight-ahead, particularly WCJ titles (Conte Candoli, Stan Levey, Frank Rosolino) appeal, but I'm tapped out due to many recent purchases.
  9. These are good albums (Japanese reissue CDs) of standards with Hod O'Brien.
  10. Went to this: Although Marianne Osiel was announced on English horn (which she also plays), AFAICT she played oboe today.
  11. True. I have a bunch of Another Timbre recordings and am on Simon's e-mail list. Cage box highly recommended if you're into that sort of thing.
  12. This is a pretty good album, but after a couple of listens I was struck by how much the first track sounds like a Billy Harper ensemble! [The other tracks less so.]
  13. Could Stevie Wonder possibly have been influenced by Ra? I wouldn't have thought so, but
  14. Thanks. Will pass unless I run across a compelling / rave review.
  15. Yes, that album has a strange history with multiple reissues and different titles/cover art. Certainly good, though.
  16. Newish book published by U. of N. Dakota [Digital] Press. Looks interesting but I'm a little sceptical about collected blog essays. Has anyone read this? Rodger Coleman, Sun Ra Sundays. Edited by Sam Byrd. 2022. In his time on planet Earth, the iconoclastic musician, visionary, big band leader, and composer Sun Ra left behind a treasure trove of music—studio recordings, live performances, rehearsals—many of them appearing on his homegrown label Saturn. In Sun Ra Sundays, Rodger Coleman examines over 130 of these recordings, both released and unreleased, placing them in historical and biographical context and giving detailed critical analyses of the music. Originally appearing on Coleman’s blog NuVoid, all of the essays have been updated, corrected, and arranged in discographical order. Sun Ra Sundays is a major work of criticism, a goldmine of information for both the novice and the experienced Ra fanatic (and everyone in [between). - ? - text cut off]
  17. This is a good one. And the sound is vivid, which is not always the case with Enja releases. Although this is a Japanese reissue.
  18. Do they sell any Indian food at those events? I'm not being facetious. Some of the Indian convenience store owners in my area sell samosas (as well as non-vegetarian foods which I skip).
  19. 👍 Excellent collection of "loft" material from NoBusiness. Also fond of Jemeel Moondoc's Muntu Recordings set from the same label.
  20. Sam Jones The Bassist! (reissue), featuring Kenny Barron w. Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins and a string quartet on some tracks
  21. The Pentagon w. C. Walton, S. Jones, B. Higgins, C. Jordan, R. Mantilla
