  1. Ray Copeland and Keith Copeland is another possible angle, but I don't have time to sleuth.
  2. I bought it (Steve Swell and Fire Into Music, For Jemeel, Fire From the Road) with really high expectations. It's not bad, but somewhat underperformed those expectations.
  3. Kenny Drew and John Coltrane (Blue Trane) Kenny Drew Jr. and Ravi Coltrane Thinking there could be an example including the Redmans (Dewey and Joshua), but haven't come up with one.
  4. Mototeru Takagi. The set's been praised on "Japanese Jazz Revisited" and "Solo Saxophone" threads. The Bastards periodically stock it. Took a few listens before I fully connected with the music, but (now) I concur with the praise.
  5. Mala Waldron was in the area recently, gave me an idea, so sleuthed: Mal Waldron, Reginald Workman Mala Waldron, Nioka Workman (they've played together live, but not recorded AFAIK)
  6. Thanks! I made cursory checks at DG and cdjapan earlier but came up empty.
  7. It was discussed on another thread. Seems like Sonny Clark did play minimally on one track. Anecdote discussed in Hawes's book fwiw.
  8. A nearby Kingston McPhee event coming up. I just found out about it. Sunday, June 9: Joe McPhee / James Ilgenfritz / Sean Meehan/ Zoots Houston / Catherine Sikora / David Menestres at the Old Dutch Church (Kingston, NY), 7:30pm. https://kingstonhappenings.org/events/joe-mcphee-james-ilgenfritz-sean-meehan-zoots-houston-catherine-sikora-david-menestres/
  9. Not explicitly. There's an early passage Dave Brubeck Octet, the innovative 1946-1950 unit with which the iconic West Coast pianist began his career... and a late passage “This is the first time in 74 years that this music has been played and recorded again,” the alto saxophonist writes... Implies that the Octet was recorded c. 1950, but no mention of CD.
  10. Can't yet speak to the Blue Shroud work, but these are a couple of things that got me interested in Guy/LJCO. [Off-topic warning, they're NOT new releases] Double Trouble Two (2 movements) Harmos
  11. Yes, cdjapan had a huge batch of East Wind reissues come in at the end of May. I preordered several and threw in a few other items incl. that Marion Brown Offering II. Dusty Groove also got most of the reissues, but it was cheaper to order from Japan.
  12. Both of those MB Offerings on Venus (same personnel) have been in stock for 1500 yen at cdjapan. I recall you recommending Offering (I) on the BFT, so decided to go for them. Re. Hank Jones, I just got this, on which he also seems to play a bit more "forward":
  13. (the latter also by Togashi). Just received a bunch of recordings from cdjapan.
  14. His pic looks younger than I would have figured. 🙂 Doesn't bother me either way.
  15. Thanks for posting this, I'm in. I find Guy's larger ensemble works more exciting than practically everything I hear from the "contemporary classical" area these days. Inclined to agree.
  16. Being released (by BGO) for the first time but this thread seems like a good place to post it.[Corrected] Reissue, see below Neil Ardley's New Jazz Orchestra Camden 1970. Personnel includes Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett on trumpet, Mike Gibbs on trombone, Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor and soprano sax, Barbara Thompson on alto and flute, Frank Jellett on vibes, and Dave Greenslade on Hammond and electric piano.
  17. Thanks! I've had that new album on heavy rotation recently. It's excellent. Coincidentally and also motivated by the recording, I reread MS's "Black Mystery School Pianists" article a few days ago.
  18. CD sounds fine to me. I wouldn't rule out a needle-drop (maybe the CD sound lacks a bit of "imaging", whatever that might be), but if so it wasn't a botched one.
  19. Today, music/spoken word concert w. Joe McPhee (voice, ts), Fred Lonborg-Holm (cello), Michael Bisio (bass), Juma Sultan (perc). Excellent event but not much over an hour long. McPhee's poetry was quite good. He didn't play as much tenor as one might have expected.
