Jimmy Greene is from my area. I first met him shortly after he graduated from the University of Hartford. Since then we have had pleasant exchanges at concerts and from time to time when I have bumped into each other. I have always greatly admired him as a person. I have seen him with his family on several occassions enjoying Monday Night Jazz in Hartford's Bushnell Park and at his performances. This is an extremely sad time for everyone, but it hits me even more knowing someone personally - even if not very closely - as well as knowing that his daughter is the same age as my youngest son. I know that Jimmy is a man of sincere faith and I pray that his faith provides him and his entire family some comfort eventually.

I am getting the same error noted above.

I have the first one and heard them live around the time of the release of the second one when I assumed they were performing music from that recording. I would say thier path is the same.

It took me a litte longer than I hoped to post my responses, but here they are as I listened to the tracks without seeing any other comments: 1. I don’t listen to stuff like this as often as I probably should. It certainly swings. Succinct round of solos. 2. My knowledge and exposure to this is limited. It is pleasant music, but I have not developed a deep appreciation as of yet. 3. My response here is similar to the first two tracks. Good music and I am sure it is worthy of more substantive response than I can give it now. Another reminder of regardless of how overwhelmed I sometimes feel with music, there is still so much out there that I have not heard and really investigated. 4. Well this is certainly different than the first three tracks. Even though it is different, there is nothing about it familiar to me. The rockish feel is not really my thing. Unlike the first three tracks, this does not feel like something that I “should” have investigated. 5. Interesting shuffle/back line type rhythm. The trumpet solo caught and held my attention. Tenor had a solid tone and relaxed flow. 6. Reminds me a bit of one of Terence Blanchard’s projects. It sounds very cinematic, which much of Blanchard’s writing for anything other than his small group sounds like – presumably as a result of his experience writing movie scores. With that said, the trumpet does not entirely sound like Blanchard. Not something I listen to often. 7. Tenor has a Lester Youngish feel. That may be too obvious though – especially judging by the later solo. I have limited exposure to pre-bop styles, but I do enjoy it when I hear it. 8. I am having a similar response to the previous track. I can’t even begin to attempt an identification, but I recognize this as important in the continuum. 9. This has a more exotic feel than some of the other tracks. The tenor has my attention. He or she is familiar and impressive. I really enjoyed the tenor, but the track as a whole was okay. 10. The past few years I have been listening to more and more solo piano, but I must confess I have yet to listen to more historical type playing. In any event, this held my attention. 11. Sorry. But this track did not really resonate with me. 12. This track certainly has a different feel and texture than most of the other tracks. Trying to focus on the musicianship as opposed to the context – which does not really appeal to me. The tenor sounded a bit like a pop tenor. The vibes were solid and the first guitar has an interesting twang. The second guitar was closer to a rockfish feel – traces of Scofield, but not him. I give up. I can’t identify any of the musicians and I do not think I will be looking to add this recording to my own collection. 13. You certainly have eclectic tastes. We are again in that territory outside of my own personal preferences. Not a statement on the quality of the music. 14. Nice piano trio interpreting a little Ellington – at least in the beginning. Could it actually be Ellington’s band? No. Too much piano going on there. My favorite of the larger ensemble tracks. 15. Sounds like Mary Halvorson on guitar. I have heard her live quite a few times the past couple of years. Her sound is pretty recognizable to me. This track could come from her recent quintet disc on Firehouse 12 or possibly one of Tomas Fujiwara’s discs. Since the sax is an alto instead of Brian Settle’s tenor, that must be Jon Irabagon and from Halvorson’s disc. Saw this band earlier this year at Firehouse 12 in New Haven. Halvorson certainly is getting a lot of attention in the past couple of years. 16. I am not nearly a guitar afficianado, but the playing here does appeal to me. I prefer a cleaner tone, but I do not always want to hear someone in the standard jazz guitar lineage. This goes to some interesting places. No idea on the identity of the musicians.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Small correction - his most recent recording is actually The Matador And The Bull, which is also very good. -
I would like to participate via download.

Yes, Live at Birdland. Thanks. Anyone with an opinion as to how good this recording is? I have it and gave it a somewhat inattentive listen during my commute last week. I enjoyed it enough to want to return to it under better circumstances.

The solo Herbie Nichols recording is very interesting.

Perry is on quite a few SteepleChase releases under his own name and with Harold Danko among others. I think he also often performs with Maria Schneider's archestra. Great saxophonist whose name is not mentioned very often.

Branford 17; Wynton 21. Mild surprise to myself and those are only the recordings with them as leader.
-
Interestingly, he shows a willingness to stretch the boundaries a bit in Oliver Lake's Organ Quartet.

Thank you for the birthday greetings.

All this love hate of Hersch has me rethinking whether I will try to catch Hersch when he performs at Firehouse 12 in New Haven in October. In my attempt to prioritize my outings in the effort to reduce my unforgiven absences from home, I was going to skip Hersh. But now maybe I should try to go. I have only heard a few of his recordings. Nothing bored me, but nothing made me feel like I need to hear everything he has recorded. Maybe I owe it to myself to catch him live in the wonderfully intimate venue with great acoustics for some attentive listening. I better decide quick. Advance tickets for the first set are already sold out.

I have heard him live with Pelt a few times, on recordings with Pelt, Harrell, Walrath, Dale Fielder and others I am probably forgetting, and I also have a couple of his recordings as a leader. I like what I have heard.

Emerald Hills is fantastic! I also really like Awakenings. You might also want to check out some of the Indigo Trio recordings with Harrison Bankhead and Hamid Drake.

I believe this is his most recent release (2006) and it is a good one.

The movie I remember laughing most while watching in the theater was "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Michael Cain and Steve Martin. -

Loudness was not an issue. Yes, he is a very powerful player on all four reeds he plays. Last night, however, as one of the people I was with commented, he did allow some melodic content to emerge every so oftem. Probably enough to at least show some variety in his playing for me. In any event, nothing I heard resonated enough to turn me into a Brotzmann fan, but I am glad I made it to the show. -

Peter Brötzmann/Jason Adasiewicz tonight at UMASS Amherst. I am somewhat ambivalent about the recorded Brötzmann I have heard to date, but I figured he is worth hearing live. -
The other day I listened to James Carter's debut recording on DIW for the first time since its initial release in 1994. It was a surprisingly good experience.

Spirit Fiction is a very good listen IMO. Caught Ravi in April with pianist David Virelles, bassist Noah Garabedian and drummer Nate Smith. One of the best live concerts I experienced this year.
