  1. Jeb Bishop, Joe Fiedler, Nils Wogram, Steve Swell, Wolter Wierbos, Samuel Blaser - just to name a few more off the top of my head.
  2. Forgot to post that I sent a PM earlier this morning.
  3. While listening to this for the first time today I had the thought that the quality of the performances was consistent with that on the previous five releases. The thrill of a new discovery has faded, but the playing is nonetheless fresh and ultimately rewarding. Then I read the liner notes and realized that five of the nine selections on the new recording are actually remastered versions of titles that appeared on the first posthumous Frank Hewitt release, We Loved You. The remaining four selections are released here for the first time, but all the titles come from the same May 16, 2001 recording session. Apparently these were all intended to be his first release, but when Hewitt passed away before the recording could released some changes were made. So, the short story is that if you enjoyed the previous releases - especially the first one - you should enjoy this. However, unless you have decided that (like me) you will purchase any Hewitt recording that is released, be forewarned that more than half of Salience was actually previously released on We Loved You.
  4. many of the discographies on jazzdiscography.com for a while have included unreleased live performances that have circulated via various digital means and even YouTube listings.
  5. I enjoyed all five releases that preceded the new one. I just received Salience in the mail yesterday. Hoping to work it into the rotation within the next couple of days.
  6. The more I hear from Palmer, the more impressed I am. IMO he is one of the more interesting of the young generation of trumpeters operating within the more or less straight ahead orbit. He is not mentioned in the jazz press as prominently as someone like Ambrose Akinmusire, but he is worth checking out. His most recent recording, with Mark Turner, Nir Felder,Edward Perez and Kendrick Scott is his best so far. Interesting compositions, fresh, honest playing by all the participants and it swings naturally.
  7. Since it seemed like amazon was sticking to that 10/18 release date, this morning I became impatient, canceled my preorder and submitted an order with Dusty Groove. Basically the same price and I just received my shipping notification from Dusty Groove. I have had this on vinyl (the Arista/Freedom reissue), for years and am really looking forward to the upgrades in the reissue.
  8. A few years ago there was general appreciation of Frank Hewitt on the board. Without much fanfare Smalls has released another Hewitt trio recording with Ari Roland and Jimmy Lovelace. I have not heard it yet, but based on my enjoyment of the previous releases this will be on my short list of items to purchase.
  9. I concur with everyone that says the Mitchell is a substantial release. I listened to it a few times last week and then followed it by listening to Sound. I have not in the past listened closely to Mitchell outside of the AEC, but this is motivating me to start from the beginning and work my way forward.
  10. Too many to count, but finding minor comfort in knowing I am not the only one.
  11. I have heard some Blaser and he is worth a listen. Besides, I will purchase just about anything with Gerald Cleaver - one of my favorite drummers and someone that I have gotten to know a little who I think is a wonderful person.
  12. I preordered it at amazon. Looks like they are waiting for the original release date (10/18) to start shipping.
  13. Received the Roscoe Mitchell today. Looking forward to listening to it very soon.
  14. Last Friday I caught the Amina Claudine Myers trio with Jerome Harris and Reggie Nicholson. She played a little gospel, avant garde, soul jazz and everything in between. It all worked.
  15. I was listening to, and enjoying it again last night.
  16. Dogon A.D. is now availble for preorder on Amazon with a release date of October 18th.
  17. I dedicated some time listening to these discs last week and enjoyed them thoroughly. I was particularly impressed with Mr. Lowe's playing on alto saxophone.
  18. Notwithstanding the descriptions in the article or anyone's opinions about the judges, I am not sure we can credibly say anything about these particular competitors unless we have actually heard them. Not that anyone here has, but it seems a little like they have been prematurely dismissed based on the article and judges.
  19. DiRubbo performs in my area relatively frequently and I have heard him live a number of times. Heavily influenced by Jackie Mclean, who he studied with, but is moving beyond that influence nicely these days. He performs/records with trombonist Steve Davis frequently and I have also enjoy his two Posi-Tone releases. The previously mentioned duo album with Larry Willis is also a subtle joy to hear.
  20. It was a 2001 release, but it does appear to be readily available on amazon for as low as $15.
  21. Expressions of Life and In Motion were reissued on a Collectables twofer.
  22. Not hacks or has beens IMO either. I also don't have any significant issue with using some "personages" to help raise a little money for the cause.
  23. PM sent re: MS-13 Don Pullen $60 (NO BOOKLET and wear to box. Booklet available from Mosaic for $10)
  24. This is not entirely semantics. The facebook post admits a general problem, but it does not comment on the specific charges he is facing under the indictment - i.e. uploading material to the website at issue.
