  1. Sorry to read today that Oscar-winning actor William Hurt died at age 71. He was always interesting to watch and gave some great performances. RIP. gregmo
  2. Yep, that was the case. But I'm with Ken on that character. gregmo
  3. Just saw the very fine Japanese film, "Drive My Car." gregmo
  4. Disc VI with the Capitol Jazzmen. Some rare Jimmie Noone on clarinet. And of course, Big T.
  5. So very sorry to hear this. Too young. RIP. gregmo
  6. The renewal of this thread caused me to get out that Felsted box and listen to it. Lovely version of "My One and Only Love" by Hawk on disc 5. Thanks for the reminder! gregmo
  7. It's hard to go wrong with Mr. Five by Five! gregmo
  8. Right after Deep Throat..........
  9. I agree. If anything, Ellington's piano style was one of his more original contributions. Monk certainly paid attention to him. The Armstrong bio was good. RIP. gregmo
  10. Sounds very good Chewy. Those Edison records often had excellent sound. Red Nichols recorded for Edison. I assume you have most of those? gregmo
  11. Just saw this (traveling for the holidays). I'll be interested in your take on the La Barbera book. gregmo

  15. A pianist who could be counted on to make any session he was on outstanding. His recordings with Sonny Stitt are still among my favorites of all time. He lived long and very, very well. RIP. gregmo
  16. Cannonball did the liners for a few of the original Vee Jay hard bop records which I think he might have produced. And of course, he did a lot of work for Riverside. He really was active on that score. I suggested that Mosaic do a Cannonball Capitol set, but I guess it would be too big. gregmo
  17. Me neither, not because I'm on the other side of the pond, but because I'm on the other side of the country! Appreciated this article. Like Lon, I hope they're around as long as I am. gregmo
  18. Just saw Branagh's "Belfast." Excellent movie. Highly recommended! gregmo
  19. Too bad Boots Randolph is gone. He could use this technology to issue a new version of "Yakety Sax" with a zombiefied John Coltrane dueting with him......... Though, on his worst day, Boots was worlds better than Gorelick. gregmo
