  1. Sounds very good Chewy. Those Edison records often had excellent sound. Red Nichols recorded for Edison. I assume you have most of those? gregmo
  2. Just saw this (traveling for the holidays). I'll be interested in your take on the La Barbera book. gregmo
  3. It'll get here at some point. Always takes a little longer to get out here to the "Best Coast"! gregmo
  4. I can't remember the last time i *didn't* preorder one. Never been a problem yet...knock on wood! gregmo
  5. Looking at other books in this series I saw Michael Sparke's book on Kenton. Larry, I think you may have mentioned it before. What's the assessment? Worth getting? gregmo
  6. A pianist who could be counted on to make any session he was on outstanding. His recordings with Sonny Stitt are still among my favorites of all time. He lived long and very, very well. RIP. gregmo
  7. Cannonball did the liners for a few of the original Vee Jay hard bop records which I think he might have produced. And of course, he did a lot of work for Riverside. He really was active on that score. I suggested that Mosaic do a Cannonball Capitol set, but I guess it would be too big. gregmo
  8. Me neither, not because I'm on the other side of the pond, but because I'm on the other side of the country! Appreciated this article. Like Lon, I hope they're around as long as I am. gregmo
  9. Just saw Branagh's "Belfast." Excellent movie. Highly recommended! gregmo
  10. Too bad Boots Randolph is gone. He could use this technology to issue a new version of "Yakety Sax" with a zombiefied John Coltrane dueting with him......... Though, on his worst day, Boots was worlds better than Gorelick. gregmo
  11. It is just SO weird that we can't preorder this one. I think Lon must be right. It must have something to do with the partnership with DOT Time. After all, Mosaic has used preorders recently to decide how many sets to produce. gregmo
  12. Also playing this one. I've been away a while and didn't know until today that Slide had passed. RIP. gregmo
  13. I recently finished this one, and page for page, I think it has more good stories than any other jazz autobio I've ever read.
  14. Going to see the new Dune movie tomorrow in Imax. Hope it does not disappoint! gregmo
  15. I've been lucky enough to get all the Basie Mosaics covering the first Verve period and all the Roulettes (as well as much of, but not all of, the Old Testament stuff). I love all of those. As for later, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Quincy Jones arranged "Lil Ol' Groovemaker." Once upon a time--many many moons ago--that was my favorite record. I also like the Dots. The stuff with the latter-day Mills Brothers is fun. gregmo
  16. "I love being a singer!" That brought a bit of mist to my eyes. He has had an epic career. gregmo
  17. Re Stitt's competitiveness, Laurie Pepper has some interesting things to say about Art's session with Stitt in the notes for the Hollywood All-Star Sessions box. She makes it clear that Stitt made Pepper very nervous, and that it was his least favorite of those sessions, even though he played pretty well. I wonder if Stitt's brief flirtation with the Varitone hurt him a little with critics and listeners. I always thought it was a gimmick and was glad when he jettisoned it. gregmo
  18. I haven't read the Hawes book, but I did enjoy (if that's the word!) reading O'Day's book. She had quite the life, no doubt about it. gregmo
  19. He was simply brilliant in "Network," for which he received an oscar nomination. gregmo
