  1. Disc VI with the Capitol Jazzmen. Some rare Jimmie Noone on clarinet. And of course, Big T.
  2. So very sorry to hear this. Too young. RIP. gregmo
  3. The renewal of this thread caused me to get out that Felsted box and listen to it. Lovely version of "My One and Only Love" by Hawk on disc 5. Thanks for the reminder! gregmo
  4. It's hard to go wrong with Mr. Five by Five! gregmo
  5. Right after Deep Throat..........
  6. I agree. If anything, Ellington's piano style was one of his more original contributions. Monk certainly paid attention to him. The Armstrong bio was good. RIP. gregmo
  7. Sounds very good Chewy. Those Edison records often had excellent sound. Red Nichols recorded for Edison. I assume you have most of those? gregmo
  8. Just saw this (traveling for the holidays). I'll be interested in your take on the La Barbera book. gregmo
  9. It'll get here at some point. Always takes a little longer to get out here to the "Best Coast"! gregmo
  10. I can't remember the last time i *didn't* preorder one. Never been a problem yet...knock on wood! gregmo
  11. Looking at other books in this series I saw Michael Sparke's book on Kenton. Larry, I think you may have mentioned it before. What's the assessment? Worth getting? gregmo
  12. A pianist who could be counted on to make any session he was on outstanding. His recordings with Sonny Stitt are still among my favorites of all time. He lived long and very, very well. RIP. gregmo
  13. Cannonball did the liners for a few of the original Vee Jay hard bop records which I think he might have produced. And of course, he did a lot of work for Riverside. He really was active on that score. I suggested that Mosaic do a Cannonball Capitol set, but I guess it would be too big. gregmo
  14. Me neither, not because I'm on the other side of the pond, but because I'm on the other side of the country! Appreciated this article. Like Lon, I hope they're around as long as I am. gregmo
  15. Just saw Branagh's "Belfast." Excellent movie. Highly recommended! gregmo
  16. Too bad Boots Randolph is gone. He could use this technology to issue a new version of "Yakety Sax" with a zombiefied John Coltrane dueting with him......... Though, on his worst day, Boots was worlds better than Gorelick. gregmo
  17. It is just SO weird that we can't preorder this one. I think Lon must be right. It must have something to do with the partnership with DOT Time. After all, Mosaic has used preorders recently to decide how many sets to produce. gregmo
  18. Also playing this one. I've been away a while and didn't know until today that Slide had passed. RIP. gregmo
  19. I recently finished this one, and page for page, I think it has more good stories than any other jazz autobio I've ever read.
