  1. It is just SO weird that we can't preorder this one. I think Lon must be right. It must have something to do with the partnership with DOT Time. After all, Mosaic has used preorders recently to decide how many sets to produce. gregmo
  2. Also playing this one. I've been away a while and didn't know until today that Slide had passed. RIP. gregmo
  3. I recently finished this one, and page for page, I think it has more good stories than any other jazz autobio I've ever read.
  4. Going to see the new Dune movie tomorrow in Imax. Hope it does not disappoint! gregmo
  5. I've been lucky enough to get all the Basie Mosaics covering the first Verve period and all the Roulettes (as well as much of, but not all of, the Old Testament stuff). I love all of those. As for later, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Quincy Jones arranged "Lil Ol' Groovemaker." Once upon a time--many many moons ago--that was my favorite record. I also like the Dots. The stuff with the latter-day Mills Brothers is fun. gregmo
  6. "I love being a singer!" That brought a bit of mist to my eyes. He has had an epic career. gregmo
  7. Re Stitt's competitiveness, Laurie Pepper has some interesting things to say about Art's session with Stitt in the notes for the Hollywood All-Star Sessions box. She makes it clear that Stitt made Pepper very nervous, and that it was his least favorite of those sessions, even though he played pretty well. I wonder if Stitt's brief flirtation with the Varitone hurt him a little with critics and listeners. I always thought it was a gimmick and was glad when he jettisoned it. gregmo
  8. I haven't read the Hawes book, but I did enjoy (if that's the word!) reading O'Day's book. She had quite the life, no doubt about it. gregmo
  9. He was simply brilliant in "Network," for which he received an oscar nomination. gregmo
  10. So, I'm gone traveling for a few weeks, and I return to the Board to find.....this....... I think I might have to leave again! gregmo
  11. Loved listening to this, but it's interesting how much it sounds like Paul Whiteman until the swinging trumpet solo at the end! gregmo This one sounded a bit less Whitemanish. Thanks for posting these, Chewy! gregmo
  12. Ditto. Listening to disc 2 now! gregmo
  13. I didn't realize Henderson recorded anything for Edison. Are these sides available on cd somewhere? gregmo
  14. In the mood for a bit of classic Mingus!
  15. "Calling You" was the song from Baghdad Cafe. It was nominated for a Best Song oscar. gregmo
  16. A bit of Curtis Fuller on this classic:
  17. Mine started its lonely trip across the country yesterday. I'll get it eventually! gregmo
  18. Yes, thanks for posting that. While I agree that Fuller's solo on "Blue Train" is fine, I think I'd rate Teagarden's second solo on the live version of St. James Infirmary (Town Hall Concert) as the best I ever heard. That said, I don't think I ever heard a record by Fuller I didn't enjoy, and I have most of them! (In fact, I'm listening to him right now with Blakey.) gregmo
  19. That's a very good deal on the Shaw CBS set. gregmo
