  1. Man, is that true. When it came to the music, Sinatra really didn't take prisoners. He loved and adored musicians, but if they couldn't cut it, they were gone. In the studio, he could tolerate one, maybe even two clams, but after that, he'd fix someone with that steely blue-eyed stare and ask, "where are you workin' next week"?
  2. I do wonder about this one. I mean, I've had the Basie Deccas since the truly ancient LP days (anybody remember that cool 2-LP set with pages in the fold--I played that thing until it was practically warn flat). I have the Decca Jazz 3-cd set, and then I bought the Heps to get better sound. Now, this comes along. These are foundational recordings, of course, but yet ANOTHER version! Sigh. Still, Mosaic, and I really *love* Mosaic boxes. Well, who needs money in one's bank account, anyway?
  3. I should note (being one of those who did it) that turning this thread from an announcement of Frank, Jr's death to one about his father sort of encapsulates the sad story of Junior's life. gregmo
  4. I've always been interested in this one, despite its reputation for being mostly fiction. gregmo
  5. Sinatra really was a bizarre character, capable in almost the same moment of incredible kindness and charity, and then of ruthless insensitivity and cruelty. Kaplan tells a story about him singing to Lauren Bacall's kids to help them sleep. Can you imagine having Frank Sinatra singing to you to help you sleep?! gregmo
  6. I'm pretty sure Mosaic planned a Byas box many years ago. Don't know why it never happened. Probably too much "public-access" stuff out there. gregmo
  7. I'm about 250 pages into the *second* volume of Kaplan's massive biography. Almost nothing there yet on Frank, Jr., though I imagine there will be a lot when I get to the kidnapping business. He seems to me to have led sort of a tragic life, forever under the shadow of someone who had to be just about the most difficult father in the world. He was actually a pretty good singer. RIP. gregmo
  8. Bee Hive Sessions, Disc IV. Digging some Dizzy Reece. gregmo
  9. Actually, my problem with his singing is that he just sang flat. Drove me nuts. It sounds like Hawke is doing the singing in the trailer? gregmo
  10. I go to a lot of movies, so like the Miles movie, I'll probably see this one. It's certainly not surprising that someone would make a movie about Baker. His whole life is pretty obvious movie material, and some of the stuff they'd make up wouldn't be as goofy as what really happened. And Ethan Hawke, like Don Cheadle, is a pretty good actor, and, one hopes, a better singer than Chet. (I was *never* a fan of Baker's singing.) gregmo
  11. I have this one. Agree with you on the Berigan--his masterpiece. gregmo
  12. James P. Johnson, disc one. Started with the later things. Now I'm going back into the mists of acoustic!
  13. Now that one, I would *definitely* go see! gregmo
  14. The trailer sure doesn't enhance my optimism, but I like Cheadle, so I'll probably go see it. And probably regret it. Hated, hated, *hated* "Whiplash" even though I admired J. K. Simmons's performance. gregmo
  15. I've been at Mosaic about the Johnny Hodges 60s Verve stuff forever. Lot of great treasures there. gregmo
  16. No recommendation! And I'm not necessarily buying that verdict. I was just curious if anyone here had listened to it yet. gregmo
  17. I'd definitely second that one. gregmo
  18. An Amazon reviewer really hated the sound on Getz/Gilberto 76. Anyone else have it to confirm/counter that opinion? gregmo
  19. Definitely the butt-ugliest speakers I have *ever* seen. Scott's description was perfect. gregmo
  20. Wish they'd do a box of all the Brubeck live stuff that Columbia has put out/has access to. Would make a very nice complement to the Studio box. gregmo
  21. For me, Rickman in any movie meant there would always be someone really interesting to watch. And to listen to. He had a wonderful, wonderful voice. Very saddened at this loss. gregmo
  22. I like this one, but with that money, I could buy all the vaults of all the labels, put them together, buy Mosaic, expand it, and issue cds of every type we've been lusting for on the Board for years! gregmo
  23. I always thought his duet with Bing Crosby, of all people, was one of the oddest, yet sweetest ones I've ever seen, and sort of appropriate I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADbJLo4x-tk gregmo
