  1. Spinning "Cirrus" from the Mosaic Select. RIP Bobby. gregmo
  2. I've never been able to do a very good job of differentiating between those two! gregmo
  3. Loren has a nice quote in the notes from some guy named Allen Lowe about Basie's piano playing on the November 9, 1938 session. gregmo
  4. Probably! If I went back through the thread, I'm sure I'd find a post begging for the Hodges 60s Verves, too. gregmo
  5. From me too! gregmo
  6. You obviously have no appreciation for the finer things..... gregmo
  7. At least in this one he talks about where the music came from. Said not a word about that in the Strings set. gregmo
  8. That he would! It's not on either of the two cds or the older lp of Famous Door material I have. gregmo
  9. Yeah, even though it's corny, I've always enjoyed that Satch sequence. 'Course, I love the "Did You Evah" duet with Sinatra too. Satch is immortal. gregmo
  10. I have (and like) the 2-cd compilation on Decca Jazz that Orrin Keepnews did of his late 50s Coral albums. He kept jazz alive in New Orleans when about the only other place to hear it was Preservation Hall. RIP. gregmo
  11. #0121 has arrived, and Mr. Five-by-Five is singing "Boo Hoo," but I ain't cryin'! gregmo
  12. Still impatiently awaiting mine out here on the West Coast! gregmo
  13. Blues in Orbit seems an odd choice for one of the very rare Ellington albums on the list. I would probably have chosen "Such Sweet Thunder" instead, and where's the Basie? Decca's Basies should be toward the top. gregmo
  14. No offense taken. I also would prefer a proper reissue! gregmo
  15. Yes, well, once they're available on a label like Fresh Sound, they're unlikely to get reissued anywhere else. gregmo
  16. They should still be available on Fresh Sound. gregmo
  17. You guys are a tough crowd! I think he writes pretty well, and he's very good at obits, which, to be fair, are pretty hard to write well. He does review modern and contemporary things, and he occasionally even likes them! gregmo
  18. I spent the better part of a day listening to it a couple of years ago. There's some wonderful stuff there, including a lively little performance from Herschel Evans. I hope lots of it gets issued, including the BG stuff. gregmo
  19. I like the album with Bley. Haven't heard the other one--might have to give it a listen! gregmo
  20. "Dynamite!" was issued on cd as a two-fer with "Chasin' the Bird." The combo cd was called "Supersax Originals," and is now a bit pricey, but available. I like all of the Supersax albums, not least, of course, because of Rosolino, who remains my favorite trombonist. gregmo
  21. Hines did some fine work in the 60s, including a couple of fine albums with Johnny Hodges for Verve. Now, if only Mosaic would get around to those....... gregmo
  22. Thanks Ubu! gregmo
  23. To me--I was never a big boxing fan--Ali was always so much greater than his sport. The moment when he lighted the olympic torch in Atlanta was truly unforgettable. RIP gregmo
  24. Hackett always had particularly lovely tone, whether he was playing on his easy listening strings albums or the jazz stuff like the classic 50s albums with Teagarden. My personal favorite is "Creole Cookin'" on Verve, but there are lots of choices. Of course, unlike you, Larry, I always thought "Emily" was kind of a pretty tune! gregmo
  25. The Basie and the Cole/Jones do look new to me. At least, I can't remember seeing them issued anywhere else. I'll be in Paris next month, so I'm thinking of picking one or both of them up. Has anyone heard them? Ubu? (Were they issued before WW1?! ) gregmo
