Oscar Peterson album for those who don't like much OP
gmonahan replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
It's always interesting to revisit the love/hate OP theme. Can Wynton be far behind? gregmo -
As I've read this often thoughtful and interesting thread, I've gone back to something that struck me years ago, and that is that, purely creatively speaking, "Take Five" was a disaster for Brubeck and Desmond. Not financially of course. It put the dollar sign on the music and set them both up more or less for life, but creatively, I think it sent both of them into a dead end, and I wonder if they ever really managed to pull out of it. In that sense, *not* having a "Take Five" probably helped Lee Konitz creatively. Or am I making too much of it? gregmo

Clifford Jordan-Strata East Mosaic
gmonahan replied to Larry Kart's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I appreciate these quick responses! I'll stay tuned to this thread. I haven't gotten the Anthony Braxton set either, and yes, I know they're radically different sets! gregmo -
Clifford Jordan-Strata East Mosaic

I'm really sitting on the fence about getting this one. How much of it would you characterize as "free," a la Sanders? I have some of the "out" stuff in my collection (Trane's Impulse Quartet stuff, Ornette's Atlantics, the Sam Rivers Mosaic), but I confess I don't listen to it much. gregmo -
I was hoping to see a Brubeck live Columbia box as a follow-up to the Studio box, but I think I'm going to have to live with disappointment on that one. gregmo

It is a real oddity that this one is still out there. Like Chuck said, though, don't look a gift horse.... It is a wonderful set. gregmo

New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming
gmonahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Are the "Jubilee" sessions the AFRS transcriptions from 1946 (about six tracks), or something else? gregmo -
His autobiography is out in paperback, and I recently got it. He had some tough years in the 30s and early 40s! So far (I'm only about 75 pages in), it's a good read. gregmo

New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming

Wow, a LOT of duplication for me too. I guess I'll probably get it. Like Jim, I guess I clear some off to replace with these. I'll be interested in the sound on the Basie Deccas. I have the Heps, and the sound on those is really good. gregmo -
Playing "Lighthouse at Laguna" tonight. I've always loved the Lighthouse records. Some really great Rosolino on those. RIP Mr. Rumsey. gregmo

He was apparently quite the gambler at one time. I always liked seeing him in a movie. I think the last one I saw with him was "Thirteenth Warrior," but there may have been something more recent. RIP. gregmo

I noticed that too. Jazz in general plays an important role in the film, which is, I agree, a bit of a downer, albeit a lovely one. gregmo

I've had the set for some time. Packaging is screwy, but the cartoons are definitely "canon." The holodeck originated in the cartoon series, among other things, and the cartoons also made it much easier to introduce various alien species without having to worry about make-up (which becomes a comical issue with the blu-rays of the original series!). The original actors AND writers took part. The animation was about as low-class as one could get, but the stories were great. gregmo

He is. Selfishly, I'm very unhappy about it because I adored his comedy--listened to his classic records when I was in high school, later on enjoyed the show, all that. And now I can't even imagine hearing his voice without thinking of him having sex with unconscious, often unwilling, women. A serial rapist, right out there in front of us. Nasty. Just nasty.

"Jazz Her Way: Nancy Wilson In The 1960s" on Night Lights
gmonahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I've tried to amass the things she recorded just in the 60s on cd. She was *prolific*! At least two albums a year. Not all have been reissued, but most are, and they are nearly all very fine. gregmo -
Sonny looks frail. Is that a cane? gregmo

It's here: Thanks Larry. I hadn't seen that one. gregmo -
I started a thread elsewhere about this because I didn't see this conversation tucked into a different thread. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read Chris's book yet, so I saw it more or less unawares. Ok, ignorant! I thought Latifah's singing was pretty good. She captured some of the great blues singer's swagger and style. Mo'onique too. They're both talented. As for the story [spoiler ALERT], I couldn't believe the ending. I mean, the two of them sitting on the back of some truck, dreamily contemplating the beautiful countryside in, where, the South?? Nothing on the controversies surrounding her death? A happy ending? I was struck dumb. I mean, the rest of it was a very average biopic, movie-wise, which I now realize reading this thread was probably all nonsense, but that ending really pissed me off. gregmo

It sure is. I'm on their mailing list, but I've heard nothing more on any possible release date for any of this material. gregmo

They showed "MacBeth" last Friday, and I caught most of it. Dark production of a dark play and ill-fated too, since it was made at the same time as Olivier's far more famous and successful "Hamlet," but I thought it was pretty good. Liked the Scottish accents! gregmo
