Possible legally, but not economically--24 cds is a lot! Even without the alternates, it would be a lot. Like Chuck, I am very happy I have that particular set on the shelf! gregmo

Well, Eric, you made me go look, and it turns out I *don't* have the first one after all. I apparently started with #4. In my defense, it does still have Monk on the cover, but it's not the first flyer. Just goes to show how one can reconstruct one's own past! Oh well. I do have that first Monk SET at least! gregmo

Charly Barnet's classic "The Wrong Idea," his marvelous attack on the "mickey mouse bands" like Sammy Kaye's: gregmo

I'm so old I still have the first one with Monk on the cover. Kept 'em all. I'm a hopeless pack rat that way. It's a bad habit. gregmo

Yeah--they're only doing one printed catalogue per year now. Frankly, I'm surprised they're still doing one at all. As for format, I'm with Chuck. gregmo

This one, at least, I already had! Tracking down all of Shorty's RCA albums can be something of an adventure. But as a Rosolino completist (talk about a lifetime task), I had to have it. gregmo

I have to wonder if, assuming it still even exists, Hip-O-Select would bother, given that most of the material is available (albeit not entirely "officially") on Lonehill and Freshsound. I wish they would, of course! gregmo

Everybody records TV shows now.

I'm still stuck with Comcast--too many trees around me for satellite. Comcast has all kinds of streaming/searching as well as a pretty good DVR, so I manage all right. There is, however, a fair amount of truth to the joke circulating on the net: "How to win the war on drugs: 1) Legalize all drugs. 2) require that all drugs be purchased through Comcast Customer Service." gregmo -
Mosaic's forthcoming James P. Johnson set
gmonahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks mjzee! I must be getting even older and blinder than I thought. I was particularly interested in the Panassie Sessions (which I still have on an ancient RCA Victor Vintage LP). Looks like one unissued take from those sessions will appear. gregmo -
Me three. Put them in double-cd jewel cases, but I do that with all cds from box sets that don't come in jewel boxes. That's a good idea about rebinding the booklet! gregmo

Mosaic's forthcoming James P. Johnson set

I've looked several times, and I can't find a link to the Discography/Song List. Did I just not see it? Odd that Mosaic wouldn't include it. I'm pretty sure they have for all their other upcoming/orderable sets. gregmo -
So soft-spoken. gregmo

I'm not sure I understand why it was changed. The other way seemed to work just fine. I *much* preferred sorting by threads than by posts, especially when I'm gone traveling and come back and want to catch up. Is there any way to make that option available again? gregmo

I just visited the store for the first time last weekend. They have an interesting way of arranging their cds (strict alphabetical order by artist, but no artist tabs--just letters of the alphabet). I'm not sure it's particularly customer-friendly, but the people working there certainly were. Found a couple of interesting cheapies in the bargain basement for 50 cents a pop and took home a couple from upstairs as well. I'd go back were I in the Chicago area again. gregmo

ARG!!! Hope it gets fixed soon! gregmo

I always liked that edition of the band too. First discovered it a few centuries ago on an old Pickwick album I found at some Drug Store rack somewhere. Especially liked Charlie Shavers's work with that band. gregmo

I've finally been able to order the set (been traveling, been busy) and look forward to it, especially the Nistico. How can anyone who's listened to jazz for any real length of time not know Nistico? The "Northwest Passage" solo on "Woody's Winners" should be enough to bring him to the attention of anyone who ever listened to any of Woody's post 2nd herd bands, but, well, whatever. gregmo

Good to hear about the football pool! Thanks to all who wrote about little Owen (six years old). He rather miraculously survived a serious brain injury, and though he faces a long rehabilitation, it's a lot better to have a future than none at all. We in the family are all grateful and hopeful. And I will get back to where Mark lives at some point and see if I can't find out how he's doing! gregmo

I have had to postpone my trip back to where Mark lives. My youngest grandson suffered a severe brain injury while playing, and I've spent the last two days (and will spend the next several) in the hospital where he is (amazingly enough) recovering. I still hope to make the trip, but it won't be for a while. My apologies to those who were anxiously awaiting a report. I will get there eventually. gregmo

Does anyone know how he's doing? gregmo

I'm irritated that I missed that thread. I would have gone to see him on an earlier visit. I'll still go by his work when I'm there in a couple of weeks. gregmo

Mosaic's forthcoming James P. Johnson set
gmonahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Right. The older set was all Sony-owned. This one is Universal. Mosaic never mixes those two. Scott wrote me once that neither label will license if the other is involved. gregmo -
I'll be in the town where he lives in a couple of weeks. I know where he works, so I'll try and stop by to say hello. gregmo

Erroll Garner was still doing some good trio work in the 60s, much of it reissued on Telarc. And O.P. did his "Exclusively for My Friends" records in that decade, which I think represent some of his best work. gregmo

Wow--genuinely surprised by this. I've always liked his playing. His work with Mel Torme has always been a particular favorite, and I loved the American Song Book albums. RIP. gregmo
