  1. Riley B. King belongs to the ages. gregmo
  2. Grrr. No sign of mine yet. Comes from living on the West Coast, I guess. Takes 'em a little while to get over here! gregmo
  3. You spent more on your kids than on jazz recordings?? Where on earth are YOUR priorities?! gregmo
  4. That's the one I'd be interested in. I'm also interested in getting the Japanese issue of the Verve "Basie's Beat" on cd. Anyone know of a site in English where both of these could be ordered? gregmo
  5. Harry James, "Complete Capitol Recordings of Gene Krupa and Harry James," disc 5. What an amazing trumpeter he was. gregmo
  6. As Director, "Touch of Evil." As actor, maybe "Compulsion." gregmo
  7. That is a reasonable guess. But at the same time, Ira continued to write new lyrics to "I Can't Get Started," and in fact wrote some stanzas specifically for Sinatra's recording on the No One Cares album. So I can see this one going either way. He also rewrote lyrics for Ella when she did the Gershwin Songbooks album. gregmo
  8. I've only been twice, but the first time was back in 1971. I think the Humphreys were there along with trombonist Jim Robinson. Great music. Enjoyed my second trip in 2004 as well. Thanks for the post! gregmo
  9. PM sent on Basie, For the Second Time Hancock, Mwandish gregmo
  10. I commented on it elsewhere in the thread on "Whiplash." I loved it, and argued it's the perfect "anti-Whiplash." Hope you like it. gregmo
  11. I ordered mine from amazon.fr. Booklet is 12 pages including front and back covers and only has the long essay by Danchin and a relatively short note from Cuscuna. It's in a standard, expanded jewel case. gregmo
  12. According to the liners, she was learning the tunes AND the arrangements. I gather it drove Ray Ellis crazy. And the sound on the remastered disc is lovely. I will give it that. gregmo
  13. I liked it too. I felt it was also very honest. It didn't present him as some kind of saint, and it explored issues that surprised me a little, especially since it was made with the cooperation of the family. And, of course, I loved the music. That farewell concert doesn't appear to be available anywhere on DVD. Would be nice to have. gregmo
  14. Have a great one Ubu!! gregmo
  15. Use Google to search "Jazz in Paris Organissimo" and you'll find a prior thread on precisely this subject. gregmo
  16. I've now listened to all three discs of this set, and I have to say, I don't see why they bothered. The original album is here in lovely 24-bit sound with some bonus tracks from the mono version, but--IMHO--if you've got the Columbia Legacy version, you don't need this one. Discs 2 and 3 are packed with alternate takes, breakdowns, and a little studio chatter and are interesting chiefly because Billie apparently showed up completely unprepared and used the takes to learn the tunes. I find no "treasures" there to make it worth the extra money. I'll probably keep it because I spent the money on it, but--and again, this is must my opinion--this was strictly an effort by Sony/Columbia to cash in. gregmo
  17. I paid...more...for it when it first came out! I do prefer the Mosaic set. The RCA LPs weren't the best quality vinyl. Not that I don't still HAVE it, of course! gregmo
  18. "Pickwick" Now there's a label name I haven't heard/seen/thought of in a long time. Used to be an old LP budget reissue label for Capitol stuff, if my dim memory serves, didn't it? gregmo

I have to say that the alternate takes on the sets I have probably will do for me, but I could understand true Billie completists wanting every last one. gregmo
  20. If I may ask, what turntable do you have that has a switch allowing you to play vertical Edisons? gregmo
  21. It's been a while since I visited this thread, but my GRP-produced Billie sets (2-disc complete Commodore and 2-disc complete Decca) each have a bunch of alternate takes. Are there more? And the complete Verve set I have is in cd-sized format, standard jewel boxes, easy to get to. The sound could be better, but the format of the packaging seems fine. gregmo
  22. Have a good one today, Allen! gregmo
  23. If you want a real giggle, try watching John Wayne's notorious "The Conqueror" some time. Now, that one is a hoot. gregmo
  24. Rather bizarrely, Amazon is only showing it for sale as an MP3 Download right now. gregmo
  25. I hadn't seen this one till now! gregmo
