I've had the set for some time. Packaging is screwy, but the cartoons are definitely "canon." The holodeck originated in the cartoon series, among other things, and the cartoons also made it much easier to introduce various alien species without having to worry about make-up (which becomes a comical issue with the blu-rays of the original series!). The original actors AND writers took part. The animation was about as low-class as one could get, but the stories were great. gregmo

He is. Selfishly, I'm very unhappy about it because I adored his comedy--listened to his classic records when I was in high school, later on enjoyed the show, all that. And now I can't even imagine hearing his voice without thinking of him having sex with unconscious, often unwilling, women. A serial rapist, right out there in front of us. Nasty. Just nasty.

I've tried to amass the things she recorded just in the 60s on cd. She was *prolific*! At least two albums a year. Not all have been reissued, but most are, and they are nearly all very fine. gregmo

Those are all great sets. I've never been a big fan of free jazz, so I've been resisting the Braxton and Clifford Jordan sets. Don't know if I'll ever pull the trigger on those two, which means I won't have *all* the big Mosaic boxes. gregmo

I started a thread elsewhere about this because I didn't see this conversation tucked into a different thread. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read Chris's book yet, so I saw it more or less unawares. Ok, ignorant! I thought Latifah's singing was pretty good. She captured some of the great blues singer's swagger and style. Mo'onique too. They're both talented. As for the story [spoiler ALERT], I couldn't believe the ending. I mean, the two of them sitting on the back of some truck, dreamily contemplating the beautiful countryside in, where, the South?? Nothing on the controversies surrounding her death? A happy ending? I was struck dumb. I mean, the rest of it was a very average biopic, movie-wise, which I now realize reading this thread was probably all nonsense, but that ending really pissed me off. gregmo

Just curious if anyone else saw this, and what the general opinion might be. I thought Queen Latifah and Mo'onique did a pretty good job. Won't start the thread with any spoilers. Maybe later if people want to get into details! gregmo

They showed "MacBeth" last Friday, and I caught most of it. Dark production of a dark play and ill-fated too, since it was made at the same time as Olivier's far more famous and successful "Hamlet," but I thought it was pretty good. Liked the Scottish accents! gregmo

That is a reasonable guess. But at the same time, Ira continued to write new lyrics to "I Can't Get Started," and in fact wrote some stanzas specifically for Sinatra's recording on the No One Cares album. So I can see this one going either way. He also rewrote lyrics for Ella when she did the Gershwin Songbooks album. gregmo

I've only been twice, but the first time was back in 1971. I think the Humphreys were there along with trombonist Jim Robinson. Great music. Enjoyed my second trip in 2004 as well. Thanks for the post! gregmo

I ordered mine from amazon.fr. Booklet is 12 pages including front and back covers and only has the long essay by Danchin and a relatively short note from Cuscuna. It's in a standard, expanded jewel case. gregmo

According to the liners, she was learning the tunes AND the arrangements. I gather it drove Ray Ellis crazy. And the sound on the remastered disc is lovely. I will give it that. gregmo

I liked it too. I felt it was also very honest. It didn't present him as some kind of saint, and it explored issues that surprised me a little, especially since it was made with the cooperation of the family. And, of course, I loved the music. That farewell concert doesn't appear to be available anywhere on DVD. Would be nice to have. gregmo
