Are you changing your travel plans/habits.......
Shawn replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not really travel plans, but thanks to the gas prices my job (which requires a commute) is now costing me a fortune every week. Yet another reason I'm going to Austin because I'll be much closer to where I'll be working and the commute will be about 1/3 the distance I'm traveling now. -
Yep . Are there any other rare Savoy covers you'd like to see ? Yusef Lateef - The Dreamer, Jazz And The Sounds Of Nature, Jazz For Thinkers (or whatever that title is).

I hope you have a wonderful birthday. Thanks for providing the community! Shawn

I don't really have any "emotional" feelings attached to sampling one way or another. It's part of the modern musical landscape and it can be used in either artistic ways...or blatant rip-off fashion. As for the legality of it my views pretty much echo Jim's. Simply put, the original artist should be credited on the album & compensated for the use of the sample. Either by a flat-fee or a royalty based structure tied to single/album sales. There are some interesting things going on in the music biz these days...interesting in that artists seem to be giving the big middle finger to the labels in general and are finding other ways to market and distribute their music. 1) NIN just released an album for free on their website, in a variety of audio formats so fans can remix as they see fit (as long as they don't in turn sell those remixes). They also of course instructed their fans to steal their last major label effort if they could (since they felt they were being raped by their record label). I'm sure these same fans will happily purchase later content. 2) The Eagles deal with Wal-Mart (though both the Eagles & Wal-Mart are part of the axis of evil in my opinion) is in itself pretty interesting. The Eagles don't need a promotional blitz machine to sell records, they have a large enough brand, all they need is to get the CD's on the shelves. The deal also netted the band $4 per album in royalties which was double what any label would offer them on a one-off deal. This also allowed them to sell a 2-CD set for $11.98 retail which was good for their fans as well. I can see other mega-superstar artists adopting this model. 3) Even a small act like King's X has decided that retaining ownership of their masters, publishing, etc is in their best financial interest. They own their own studios and touring equipment, why would you need a label? On their most recent release it states "Licensed from King's X" on the CD jacket and on the disc itself. Times are a-changing.

Very sorry to hear. I was lucky enough to catch him a few times in Seattle with Hank Crawford back in the late 90's...on one occasion Frank Wess showed up and sat in with them. I spoke with him after one of the sets and he was very nice and glad to hear I was enthusiastic about the performance. He'll be missed.

ESCAPE FROM MAINE - where to go?

There's always Bucksnort, TN! http://tennessee.hometownlocator.com/TN/Hi...n/Bucksnort.cfm -
I've done very little music purchasing over the past couple years, but I've grabbed a few items in the past week or so. - found a used copy of this one at my local CD shop. - Pre-ordered this one from Amazon. - of course I HAD to get the Stanley T!

Is Monk the exception that proves the rule? Isn't he always?

Thanks for sharing all these stories! Most of the recording projects I worked on in college were improvised...no other choice when you could only get 4 hour blocks of studio time! But the most interesting one was when my co-engineer and I decided to dispense with all "accepted" current mic techniques for drums...we had the guy play, walked around the room until we found the spot where it sounded best...then put two U87's on stands in a near coincident pattern, set levels and rolled tape. It ended up sounding great.

Durn tootin'! I got 72% Dixie!!!!!! MG You've listened to WAY too many soul jazz records... Durn Tootin' should be a dead giveaway.
-
Actually I'm convinced that Virginia & West Virginia think it never ended.
-
My answer: 91% (Dixie). Is General Lee your father? Not really surprised, lived most of my life south of the Manson/Nixon line.
-
As a background sound, something to add color, I can see it maybe being used in that context and sounding alright...I just don't think it's a good solo instrument for jazz. Of course this is all my opinion...and more than a little tongue in cheek. I also feel the same way about the Harpsichord...

Sounds great to me! We'll have to figure out a way to blast Jim out of Plano for a couple days. -
95% of the time I agree with that, but I really like the opening track on Bass On Top.

Almost 5 years ago I moved away from Texas, basically spurred on by a flurry of depression-induced mania. Ever since that time I've been meandering around the country from state to state, job to job...basically chasing my tail. Countless times during that period I thought about returning, but the opportunity didn't present itself. I lived in Dallas before, but really wanted to settle in Austin if the stars aligned correctly for me. They've aligned, baby! I applied for and received a transfer with my present employer to our Austin location! I'll be arriving the 2nd week of June. I must say that few times in my life has anything ever felt more "right". I don't feel like I'm being pulled there as much as being pushed by something greater than myself. In a way it feels like I've awakened from a half-decade coma. When I visited Austin this past Christmas I didn't want to leave, it was painful to get on the plane and fly back to Virginia. That was the final sign that I needed to start working towards my goal of returning to Texas. I'm EXCITED!!!!!

Gene should've known better!

I don't know if I'm the only one out there who hates these things...but everytime I hear one on a jazz recording it makes my SKIN CRAWL! Some instruments just don't lend themselves well and these things always sounded like a succession of out of tune doorbells strung together. Yuck!

The JAMFs were already here

Scotch & Water was written by Joe Zawinul. When the producer asked for the name of the tune, they told him who the composer was and he thought they said "Joe's Avenue".
