  1. The Moody Blues primarily.
  2. ...unless I'm mistaken, this perfectly sums up the blues. play a phrase, play it again; play another phrase, then play it again.
  3. Maybe not Prog Rock....but I think this band had some influence in that area... Gary Burton Quartet - Berlin 1967
  4. Wish I could help, but most of my Windows audio/video software is about 7 years old. I just never got around to upgrading. I would recommend downloading foobar2000 for a real lightweight player with some cool audio file conversion capabilities and it's free.
  5. Look at it this way. You also get Comin' Your Way, Jubilee Shout, A Chip Off The Old Block, Mr. Natural and In Memory Of (the last 2 never on CD outside the Mosaic, afaik).
  6. Debussy & Claude Thornhill's band. That's what I hear when listening to Kind Of Blue or Milestones or Paul Horn's Something Blue (the first sequel?). Now, my study of classical is limited, so I'm going more from my own sense of "mood" than anything else. Thornhill's band had this way of getting into "zones", a track like Snowfall is very ornate and pretty...but there's some sort of underlying mystical quality about it. An implied drone if you will. Then you've got Gil Evans' charts which of course links directly to KOB. And for whatever reason, when I hear the mellower sections of KOB, I always end up hearing fragments of "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun".
  7. Glad Chewy started this thread, it gave me the impetus to pull the Mosaic out and listen to this session last night. What a GEM! Also played Mr. Natural which is another favorite.
  8. Yep, I saw him there as well. Don't remember the year, it was shortly before he passed away, he was touring with Kenny Drew Jr. on piano.
  9. It was reissued in the Turrentine Mosaic box.

  11. Definitely. I still miss living in Seattle from time to time. I remember when Earshot was going on, interesting people always showed up at Jazz Alley and sat in with whoever was there. One time it was Frank Wess who showed up in time to sit in with Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff for a set, always great to be around for moments like that.
  12. Personally, I'd highly recommend getting the 2-CD sets of Coltrane & A Love Supreme, simply because of the wealth and quality of the bonus material. Ballads also has many alternate takes, but I'm not as crazy about that session so I didn't pick up that version.

  14. I have the Impulse digi-pak version from '96, I just put it into iTunes and it says the time of that track is 10:53
  15. x2
  16. All those collector's choice discs had white CD labels and white jewel case trays. The older 80's discs I believe were silver. I've never even seen an actual copy of the CD, though I have seen the vinyl before.
  17. One odd thing I just noticed about my copy of this LP... On the back cover, Side One and Side Two are listed...as are the writing credits for each track...BUT THERE ARE NO SONG TITLES!
  18. Opeth is the epitome of prog-metal in my book, they cover all the bases and do it with style and class. They skip out on the Dream Theater-esque pyrotechnics and instead concentrate on mood and texture.
  19. thanks for the review, I'll check them out.
  20. Dear Prudence still sounds ahead of it's time as far as I'm concerned. The drop-D tuning is a nice touch. I've Just Seen A Face is a great little song that's pretty well ignored. I Want You (She's So Heavy) was probably the first Doom track.
  21. The listing on Amazon must be messed up. The listing indicates it's a single disc with only 4 songs listed. Can't say I know what this would be, so I assume I'm getting what I think I am. We'll see! My order shipped this morning. $10.39, includes tax. You're not going to regret it a single bit. That's a FANTASTIC collection of music on 2 discs.
  22. Jimmy Smith - Six Views - if you like baritone sax, get that disc, very cool. Stanley Turrentine - A Bluish Bag. That disc (and it's sister album Return Of The Prodigal Son) both contain previously unreleased material, so I'd get 'em. me either. Thankfully, I already own both of those.
  23. Pelican's only vocal track is quite haunting and beautiful I think.
