  1. IIRC he did but I'm not sure on what. Buddy Tate plays clarinet on Jumpin' at the Woodside.
  2. Amongst other treasures, by my count there are 6 cuts with Prez on clarinet. Until now I believe there were less than 30 extant recordings of him on the instrument so this is a substantial addition.
  3. Just got a program: participants will include Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith and Muhal Richard Abrams.
  4. cd announced for December 9 on Amazon. Same day Apple releases volume 2 of Savory Collection: Live Prez with Basie. Big day!
  5. Volume 2 out next week. The one released track is great. http://jazzmuseuminharlem.org/savorycollection/vol2/ Same day Amazon says they're releasing Ellington Treasury Shows Vol. 22!

    Jack Sheldon

I have a vague memory of him taking some nice solos on a Hi-Lo's album. (Just realized how strange the spelling of their name is. An early example of the misuse of apostrophes (or "apostrophe's" as people would write today). While I lived in LA he often played around town and like a jerk I never went to see him.

it always bugged me that Peter Weldon's liner notes to the cd version of The Return of Art Pepper are built around putting down Sheldon. (And IIRC the mosaic select reprinted those notes.) I think his playing is just fine on those sessions. And does anyone remember his tv show "Run Buddy Run".
  8. So I asked him if he remembered many of the players and he replied: "The one I remember is a bass player who they called Red because he had red hair. He was there many times I attended esp. at the basement of Capital records in Hollywood." Red Callender?
  9. Read the Schulbergs many years ago (I think before I knew that Disenchanted was about Fitzgerald). At a Planned Parenthood book sale I found a paperback copy of Faces in the Crowd. Your post reminded me that I should read it.
  10. Wow. I saw a small pile of them when I was there on Monday.
  11. I've read a bit of Vian (in translation). I'll look for this.
  12. Where did you find the Boris Vian essay?
  13. I was there and I bought both cds that were for sale, maybe from you.
  14. Zadie Smith: "Swing Time". Surprised to discover that the title refers to the Fred Astaire movie.
  15. He's featured nicely on Ellington Indigos.
  16. Somehow missed this thread. I have a friend who as a teenager hung with the Platters. (His license plate is "ONLY U".) I'll try to see if he was around for any of this and if he remembers Dolphy.
  17. I was at that concert and discussion. Good description of it. Very meditative.
  18. She played a 200 people club in Santa Barbara only a few years ago but then returned to play the 5000 seat SB Bowl a bit later on a double bill IIRC with the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. A great evening of music.
  19. Hope they're selling it. They could have sold a lot of Chico Freeman cds last night if they'd had them there.
  20. The documentary about The Wrecking Crew makes it clear that Barney was a major component of it. The Wrecking Crew, that is-- not necessarily this record.)
  21. Clint and Keith Richards are going to bury us all.
  22. Arrived in London to discover there is a large jazz festival on here. Saw double bill of Chico Freeman and The Cookers at Cadogan Hall last night. Lovely venue, respectful audience and great music. Saturday seeing Mike Westbrook solo.
  23. I first heard him in London 2 or 3 times (not sure which) in the summer of 1964. Hadn't heard of him before. Next time I saw him he was opening for Van Morrison a huge fan of his. Earliest record I have of him he's playing piano for Zoot and Al and there's no mention in the liner notes that he sings. An original. Not many of those around.
  24. The late great jazz photographer Herman Leonard took many photos of the late great Leonard Cohen some of which can found on his (Herman's) Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hermanleonard/?pnref=story I suspect they were brought together by Cohen's frequent collaborator Sharon Robinson who's late husband was a collector of music photos. (Way too many "late"s in this post.)
