  1. I was listening to a Jubilee show from June 1944 which had the Eddie South Trio with Billy Taylor on piano playing a Taylor composition entitled "The Mad Monk". With a bit of internet research I learned that Taylor later recorded the piece with his own trio sometimes with an alternate title "Monk's Mood" (not to be confused with....). The composition has some Monkish qualities and I presume it is an homage to Thelonious. The broadcast was made before Monk's first recording session but according to Taylor's web site he headed to Minton's as soon as he had arrived in New York. I guess he heard Monk there but I've certainly never thought of Taylor as a Monk acolyte. Was I just missing something?
  2. BTW The Naxos series of Ellington cds is far from complete but does tend to include some rare things like the "Hit of the Week" sides. Sound is good too. Easily available in Canada if not in the US.
  3. There are a few JSP boxes with Paramount material; I have the one that has about 100 blues tracks. Me too. I think it cost about $20. But I think Allen already has that. IIRC I bought it on his recommendation.
  4. Barcelona: If you're interested in architecture at all or just Gaudi, I found the Casa Batllo even more fascinating than the Segrada Familla. Easy to get to see without advance tickets.
  5. I found it for $8.95 and $3.99 from an Amazon re-seller-- which I find easier to do than E-Bay. Thanks for all the help people. (Now I just hope it doesn't turn out to be "nothing special".

    Mose Allison

I saw him there too. IIRC he did a Jazz 625 show summer of '64.
  7. Not curious enough to pay 84 pounds. (plus postage).
  8. I've been listening to the Jubilee shows in chronological order while I work out or drive to LA. I'm missing quite afew of them but the one I don't have which I'd most like to hear is the 60th which has amongst other guests Ivie Anderson and Bing Crosby. I'm pretty sure Crosby is the first white singer or musician to be on the show. (Jack Benny showed up earlier and Johnny Mercer a couple of shows later.) Anyone have access to it or know where i can get it. BTW I highly recommend these shows: Guests include Ellington, Basie, Benny Carter, Art Tatum and many people I've never heard of who are petty good. You also get to hear what was going on during the recording ban of 1943.
  9. I agree with this, but (and how many times have we had this debate?!) if the material is available nowhere else, well, I get it. Example: The John Graas Jazz Studio and Jazz Lab recordings originally issued on (I think) Decca. They're only available from Lonehill. Mosaic has never touched them, and neither, to my knowledge, have any of the "legitimate" reissue labels. So I got the Lonehills. I don't feel great about supporting the label, but I want to hear that music by a (pretty well forgotten) fine jazz artist. gregmo Yeh, I spent years looking for that one. Once bought it as 3 45 EPs.
  10. Thanks. Somehow this slipped by me. I think I already have everything on the first five discs and much of what's on the later discs. But this looks like a reasonable price that won't take up too much room on my shelves.
  11. I disagree. It's a myth that you get the best people by offering the most money. One tenant of good business is never to hire someone who's just doing it for the money.
  12. Has there ever been a box set of the complete Louis Armstrong Okeh material controlled by Sony? I was looking for the 1931 Pops version of I Got Rhythm, discovered it was controlled by Sony and there doesn't seem to be available on a legitimate cd. Or have I just not looked in the right places?
  13. Elvis Costello: Almost Blue
  14. Thanks. This all helps though I'm under the impression that Monk doesn't play on any of the sessions with Christian. Doesn't sound like him to me. Does sound like it could be him with Don Byas.
  15. I've just been listening to the Don Byas "Midnight at Minton's"-- a great record. Is there a a list somewhere of all the recordings that were issued of the Minton's sessions and is there any received opinion about who's playing on them? (The Monk Discography I own has him on several numbers where no-one else seems to think it's him.)
  16. Does anyone here have the existing cds? How is the sound?
  17. Dr. John last night. Best he's been of the 5 or 6 times I've seen him. Knocked me out by doing Charles Brown's "Tell Me YOu'll Wait for Me".
  18. http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-09-13/entertainment/42036719_1_jazz-night-stanley-turrentine-nursing-home Got this on Facebook from Ghost of Miles.
  19. I'm reading both Ted Gioia's The Jazz Standards and Will Friedwald's Stardust Melodies. Frieldwald gives the history and an analysis of 12 of "America's Most Popular Songs". All but two of them are amongst the 252 songs covered by Gioia. I'm having fun jumping back and forth between them. Also reading our John Littweiller's "Sundido".
  20. I read this and really liked it. IIRC he's updated it a couple of times. Not sure which edition I read. BTW One of the best rock autobiographies I've read is Tommy James' The Music, the mob and Me (or something like that). Morris Levy, owner of Birdland and Roulette records is a major character in it.
  21. Quote from the Mosaic site: If the cds they used were made from metal masters and transferred by Steve Lasker they're probably sound pretty good.
  22. Your Mulatu Astake gig got a nice plug form Richard Williams on his Blue Moment blog.
  23. Someone smarter than me (virtually anyone on this board) might try searching for the earlier post that gave full details of every cut not included in the 2 Disk sony release.
  24. I read several books in this series before I got to this one which is the first. IMHO it's the best and certainly the place to start.
  25. Well, that would be about all of them, wouldn't it? Universal and Sony together control all the Brunswicks, Sony has the Victors and the Okehs. What's left? gregmo There's the Durium, Cameo and Plaza recordings. (There may be more.) Someone on this Forum gave a complete listing and said-- IIRC-- that they were controlled by Sony. Unfortunately I've searched but can't find the thread.
