Laura's a very fine talent indeed. I love her playing, it's become instantly recognisable , good ideas, great tune smith and an all round nice person.

Lou Blackburn - Complete Imperial Sessions BLUE NOTE
Clunky replied to Tjazz's topic in Recommendations
I thought any audio disc over 74 minutes is not a red-book CD and therefore may not play on all CD players ( esp high end machines). Could these ultra-long discs cause some play back problems ? -
their web site is devoid of information as to what programme content will be like- I'm not holding my breath.

Capitol Jazz/Condon Mob are Running Low
Clunky replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I picked up the Capitol set in the August sale at Mosaic. I'm not sure I have enough interest in the Condon to go for it. The Capitol set is big of course but very interesting because of the sheer variety of musicians presented. Not all of it is good , discs 1-4 have a far slice of average Dixie (Nappy Lamare) or barrel-house piano ( Armand Hug) which loses it's appeal after a few listens. Buy without caution only if you like this sort of stuff. On the other hand the Bud Freeman session sounds very modern almost Tristano-like, ...wonderful. No regrets here overall.... -
First box-set you ever got?
Clunky replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
my first box set of any genre was Herbie Nichols Mosaic in 1992, it's been down hill ever since as nothing has quite matched the intense excitement I got from discovering Nichols music (and Mosaic) -
Tracks from PJ M-401 appear as bonus tracks on the 1992 CD issue of "Tenors Head On" and disc 2 of the Art Pepper Mosaic select. There is no duplication.
-
To partly answer my own question I've realised that the "Just Friends" sessions I have already as bonus tracks, split across the "Tenors Head On" Cd ( 4 tracks of Perkins/Kamuca) and disc 2 of the Art Pepper Mosaic Select ( 5 tracks of Perkins/Pepper). Pretty good material and arrangements. Sound on the Tenors Heads On session could be better but it's good enough

a Japanese reissue is due soon and I'm very tempted. Anyone care to comment on this or "Just Friends" Perkins/Pepper session ( also due out soon) in Japan

Belle and Sebastian are great, Aberfeldy have quite a similar vibe and are well worth checking out

oops , this one of the few CA releases I loath, boring and dull, give me Clark Terry any day.......no seriously this is not one of Julian's better releases, those were all long time behind him in 1962. Live in San Francisco at the Jazz workshop- now that's a different story..................

Just received "The Prestidigitator", very nice date, I dug out what other Wallington I had, I gave an LP on Progressive called George Wallington- Live at Cafe Bohemia a spin , the tracks are described in the liner notes as being unreleased- anyone know if this release is simply out-takes from the Prestige date released under the same title or is it exactly the same material. The track titles are identical except for ordering ( of the CD issue- according to allmusic)

I've a Charlie Byrd - Orpheum LP "Blues Sonata " which sounds great, very full sound- quite a reasonable session
-
I also have seen a Bud Shank live set recorded at The Haig around 52-54. I think it was issued by Choice. The Shank is dated January 1956- good date in early natural sounding stereo

well I'll answer my own question. It's a pretty adventurous set by any standards and out there by comparison to other Lacy I have ( Morning Joy, Ny Capers.., The Door, Dutch Masters, Live at Dreher , Work) but I found it pretty compelling. I really like what Aebi adds to the date especially on the opening track of this disc. Some of the latter tracks are very weird but I have no regrets on this one even if I did order it in error....

Pre 1950 West Coast Jazz records
Clunky replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Recommendations
Also Lucky Thompson _ Smooth Sailing - Indigo- mainly has LA based recordings with Dodo et al. -
Steve Lacy - Songs - Hatology, ordered in error, was trying to get We See, not sure what I'll do with it, probably be bold and give it a listen

Does anyone still listen to FM radio? Do you own a tuner?
Clunky replied to Dmitry's topic in Audio Talk
I vaguely remember I used to listen to something called Jazz FM, broadcasted in the evening when I lived in London 16 years ago. now call Smooth FM.... guess what it plays....... -
Dang...I only last year upgraded from a poor EMI LP of 16 of these sides to the full Retrieval set. I was hughly impressed with the sound of JRT's transfered. I thought they sounded almost as good as decent electric recordings... what do I know. Add to the list .....sometime mid 2008
-
My problem is remembering what's new to me this year,of new releases Reptet- Do this Andrew Hill - Time Lines-BN Liberty Ellman- Ophiocus Butterfly- Pi Jamie Stewardson- Jhaptal - FSNT of reissues... Lars Gullin- Danny's Dream- Dragon Warne Marsh- Ne plus ultra- Hatology
-
what about "Songs" on Hatology, any good?
-
Up... as I'm currently enjoying the Hatology set "Live at Dreher" 1981, very passionate but highly enjoyable set , also picked up a very cheap DVD entitled "Steve Lacy -Master of the soprano sax"- it features the only slighlty scary Irene Aebi- my first exposure and I'm pleasantly surprised.

I've a few green label Lps and they sound great ( Hampton Hawes Green Leaves...). Ive also got some relatively lightweight yellow label LPs that appear to come in original heavy sleeves- these also sound excellent as do Vogue Uk imprints etc. Basically decent sound to start off with helps a lot.....
