Maria Schneider - forget looking in your CD shop!
Clunky replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in New Releases
I got an email too saying it was on it's way to me, I didn't get track details and personnel listing - perhaps I havent paid enough. Her pricing strategy was more than a little complex. -

AOTW June 29-July 5 Warne Marsh / All Music
Clunky replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Album Of The Week
very nice indeed, I really enjoy Warne's unique sound and approach. All Music is the tops of his latter material ( that I've heard). -
What I want to know is this, I've got and love, This is Tal Farlow (verve Elite) , Swing guitar (Verve By request) and the compilation Jazz Masters on Verve:Tal Farlow. So I'm only missing about half an Lps worth of Costa sides. Should I jump...oh decisions..

Duke Meets Coleman Hawkins (Impulse) George Lewis- (Vocalion) rough stuff 1944 Ed Hall- Commodore sessions ( Ace of Hearts)- nice Chocolate Dandies- (Parlophone) ok- some terribel singing though
-
I've just two @ 33.33 rpm from Classic records ( Introducing Johhny Griffin and Undercurrent ( Kenny Drew) ,they feel and look amazing, so weighty , very smooth but very expensive but probably good value when you consider what went into making them.

I enjoyed Sun Ra piano on the Arkestra session "Live at the Pitt Inn" DIW so much that I was intrigued by a reviewers suggestion ( in 1988 The Wire when it still had decent jazz content) that Ra's piano was like Herbie Nichols. Back then I'd never heard of Nichols but one "Love gloom cash love" later I was hooked and of course shortly after I discovered Mosaic . 20 or so sets later none quite match up to the first. So Ra's piano playing cant be all bad. i've got Monorails, two good things about a) It's short B) nice cover

the Uptown Boston 1952 set is excellent and in pretty good sound, highly recommended

Mosaic charge $12 for orders to the UK of less than $100, yes they make a profit but the service is second to none for replacing defective disc, broken boxes .....Perhaps the level of profit is too high and I for one wouldn't mind if they reviewed their charges for overseas customers.

I think that's the EXODUS side. EX-cellent stuff! wrong series ( Exodus is in the JiP series from Universal) the one I'm thinking of has Joakim Kuhn thundering away on the piano and if I remember correctly Jenny-Clarke on bass

I have this on Japanese CD from the mid 80s, the back of the CD case is a faded yellow with Japanese writing only, the sound is out of this world. It was the first BN Cd or lP I ever got and I still love it

Slide's one in the "Americans in Paris" (EMI France) set is excellent- I forget its title but it's raw and powerful.

Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
Clunky replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Blythe's Light Blue on Columbia is also a good one, sound on my LP is a little one dimensional though -
errr.....two threads...anyway do try Handy's Roulette records from late 1950s early 1960's, I've a couple on a double LP that work pretty well. As I mentioned on this threads alter ego it would make a nice select.

I wish I something to add here. My only comprehension of Basie whilst he was alive was via his bizarre appearance in Mel Brooks "Blazing saddles" which was released when I was a teenager. Maybe something stuck with me as from the start of my affair with jazz I knew I loved Basie.
-
Center of the Circle also on A&M is a weird jazz/rock/blues brothers amalgam which works pretty well even it really on skirts jazz as an influence. I have this on LP. Kellaways playing on a Brookmeyer/Terry Mainstream album is also good.

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Clunky replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
great idea, i'd go for one. -
which Lafitte is the one to go for ?

Apparitions is a little unsettling in a way. Adobe is immediately appealing partly because of the strong playing but the familiarity of the tunes.
-
I finally got round to listening to Adobe. It's a very fine "in the tradition" sax trio set. It's perhaps less personal a statement than "Apparitions" on Songlines but it shows Malaby in a very favourable light. This is a guy to watch, his appearance on Lightcap's two FSNT discs with the wonderful Bill McHenry , and his dovetailing with Marty Ehlrich on "Malinkes Dance" (Omnitone) show how well he works. He's coming to town withHadens Liberation Orchestra and I for one won't miss it/him.

It's a nice gesture but all of the mosaic sets I receive from them show that they always make a decent profit on the shipping charges. Typically I'll be charged $18 shipping but cost to mosaic will be nearer $12 (as evidenced by the charges on the package)
-
its on the mosaic set and the "New Tristano" CD on Rhino I think

What have you learned from being on this forum?
Clunky replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
I have broadened my listening considerable since visiting this board and others. I share Chuck's enthusiam to hear new things. Hence I've followed up recommendations here for jazz from Australia and Italy, Chicago etc , discovered Nielsen , Honneger and Walton (expensive thread that one!!), chilled to the Beach Boys and Loretta Lynn, massively expanded my collection of prewar jazz, delved into the "new thing" (aka Funny Rat), picked up on Nessa artists and ...and...and consolidated my understanding of 1950s and 1960s BN type jazz. But I also listened to opera, rock, blues, all manner of classical music prior to my arrival here. It's difficult not succumbing to second rate stuff though. It's the very nature of being exploratory, you'll come across stuff that doesn't work for you.
