  1. Over the past 6 months or so I've picked up some nice British dance band 78s. These often contained hot solos and can be surprisingly jazzy. Jack Hylton's Kit Cat Band has proven to provide good listening. So yesterday I came across this CD of 24 tracks by this band on the Mellotone. Sadly the music has had NR applied excessively which is a real pity. Music sounds metallic and with headphones on you hear weird swishing sounds. Really only any use as reference for which real 78s to look out for.
  2. On my wish list!,, Sampling this set on Spotify, lovely although the recordings/ masterings seem to lack depth
  3. I have decidedly mixed feelings about this release. I love Kidd and Kowald, so felt I really had to get it (I do not have much of either man on vinyl). Not quite a rational decision, since the CD version has this and an additional Kidd performance, for about 40% less. Right now, I don't think it was worth the premium. I suspect the same digital master was used for LP and CD. I think the original recording is not really that good. Kowald, for example, is often to far back in the mix. And the performance, while pretty good, is not one for the ages. At the least, I thought No Business could have included a single CD of the other performance with the LP. Evan Parker did this with the Live at Maya double LP. Anyway, maybe I'll be a little more positive about it all on another hearing or two, but for now a bit of a disappointment. Today was my first spin of this and Tribal Ghost. I've now got half a dozen NB vinyls. They sound perfectly good but not really top drawer in terms of sound. Compared to other new vinyl they all sound a little flat. None sound brilliant which may well stop me buying more. I've no complaints about the music content though. I was pretty impressed with both recent purchases , with Live in NO just getting the nod.
  4. Thanks to the tip above I've picked some more Boswell Sisters, I found a Brunswick album (B1003) of 8 of their sides - a reissue from 40s/50s, shellac quality leaves a little to be desired but the discs are unmarked despite the album cover being quite worn. Lovely music What‘d ya do to me / When i take my sugar to tea 80011 Roll on Mississippi, roll on/ Shout sister shout 80012 Heebie Jeebies/ Shine on harvest moon 80013 River stay away from my door / It’s the girl 80014 played these earlier after a quick clean to remove some dust and finger prints
  5. Jordan/Kowald/ Fielder-----Live in New Orleans--- (No Business)
  6. How do the Bennie Green's compare to his BN dates. ?
  7. any thoughts regarding Mclean's Bout Soul. I have a portion of this on the Grachan Moncur Select. Are the extra tracks up to par?
  8. Art Ensemble-----Live in Japan-----(DIW) single LP edition
  9. Regarding Jazz Crusaders set I've listened to samples and some of then albums via Spotigy and it's failed to grab me. All grooves and no quality solos. Fair comment?
  10. On of my favourite records. And I still only own it on vinyl (though it has been CD-r-ised...and mp3'd)!!!!!!! Yes, I have that one on CD too, and it is a good one. It seems to have got some circulation here on vinyl, but the other ones that MJAZZG posted - just don't see them. Just wondering if this is fairly common fare in UK. I've not stumbled across SOS or the Skidmore in 10 yrs of vinyl collecting. Other Ogun vinyls have set me back around £15-20 and crop up occasionally. I'd imagine that a Deram such as the Skidmore would be altogether pricier and very uncommon ( at least in Scotland!)
  11. I like this one, have the CD issue which sounds more than adequate.
  12. picked up yesterday at a local record fair. All you'd expect from an Esquire pressing.
  13. I skipped the RVG of JuJu and have only the McMaster to compare to the new SHM-CD. The latter wins hands down principally due to being much less harsh. On the McMaster the cymbals are way up which contributes to a grating effect. The SHM is much smoother, has better soundstage ( separation of the instruments) and more audible bass. So no disappointment here with this SHM. The best SHM I've heard is Patton's "That certain feeling", but it is the only version I've heard
  14. I hope we this sort of set again. Like some of the best Mosaics it brought together tracks from various labels honouring a musician previously denied "box set" patronage. The Serge Chaloff might be the best example of this sort of set.
  15. Archie Shepp------ Blase/ Poem for Malcolm-------( BYG) Japan Rather better sound I think than the Affinity edition of Blase. Poem for ...is new to me today. Agreed, although this is marked as OOP on the NB website.
  16. These three I'd not heard before but I passed up on a whole load more MJQ/ John Lewis/ Milt Jackson's from the same collection
  17. Scott Yanow is pretty damning of Striker at AMG, I'd be interested to know what seasoned Lewis watchers here think of it.
  18. Picked up three John Lewis London Atlantics - all mono, Golden Striker, The Wonderful World of Jazz and Improvised Meditations & Excursions. All seem pretty solid sessions , I can see why Golden Striker might out live it's initial appeal but it sounds nicely done to me. Also got the Milt Jackson UA- London illustrated above. These London LPs are so good IMO. At £6 each , same price as a CD, not bad.
  19. No people what you need is black ravioli soaks up subsonic vibrations ...and other vibrations that might concern the likes of RRK or Sun Ra
  20. I'm waiting on the Zeitlin and the Blakey single.
  21. Dippin is top notch Mobley,
  22. How did I not know about this happening at my backdoor. Sounds like it was good music
  23. Picked up five Boswell Sisters sides Sentimental gentleman from Georgia/ Old Yazoo -----(Brunswick) UK 1379 Down on the delta/ Charlie two-step ----------------------(Brunswick) UK 1403 the fifth was Louisiana hayride coupled with Mary Lou Williams - Night Life I was drawn to this last title because of the MLW side. I've not previously heard the Boswell Sisters but they have a jazzy and quite charming style.
