I recently off loaded some BN CDs where I either had the sessions in better sound on other BN CDs or LPs. I needed the space and was surprised that i had as many as 20 duplicate sessions. I found preferred a patch work of discs across JRVG, McMaster , Larry Walsh, RVG and EMI France ( didn't know who mastered these). I'd not done a back to back comparison before but found it briefly interesting to compare. The clear looser was Larry's Conns. I'd say vey few were bad sounding. Many of my decisions regarding which one to keep we're marginal. Kept McMasters of Demon Dance , Let freedom Ring and Black Fire Kept RVG of Idle Moments, Kept EMI France of The Connection ( ditching the JRVG) Make of that what you will

Yes this is very good and sound is decent too.

Thanks for noting this. I got a copy from Soundohm as per your suggestion. Arrived very promptly. Music here seems very fine. I do like bass clarinet. Plenty of listening to had here. Packaging of this set is deluxe!

I went for RVGs for overall sound and availability/ cost. Japanese issues have almost always been harder to find at a reasonable cost.

Thanks Lon

Any further comments on the sonic benefits of Shorter's " JuJu" and "All seeing eye" and Hill's "Grassroots" My McMaster Juju sounds fragile with splashy cymbals, I'd forgotten it sounded this poor My RVG ASE sounds basically ok , I'd be hoping for a clearer bass and improved sound stage. Grassroots Conn sounds pinched and nasal, very narrow sound stage and brittle. Not a good combo, it's no wonder I've played this so little. The music I like but can easily see that if improved it would be spun more often. These are the only editions I have of these sessions ( along with many other BN dates). I've generally avoided upgrade fever but the down side of my wonderful new DAC is that it reveals all, which some times isn't a good thing.

Mal Waldron/Jackie McLean--------Like old times--------(JVA/Victor) Japan 1976 McLean sounding much fresher hear than on another Japanese session from 1986 (Paddlewheel). This has a decent amount of spark and Mal is on top form

That's pretty much my approach plus I'd add sessions such as Odyssey of Iska which I've never heard in any format ( still pondering that one)

whilst I've not got Polycurrents what amazes me about this series is the improvements they have achieved on those I've heard ( Speak no Evil, Somethin"Else, Out to Lunch). How do they do it ? I have SPE and OTL on 45rpm editions and these SHM discs sound so close and yet despite postage/ customs cost 1/3 of the price. I'm not complaining other than wondering which titles really are actually worth re-buying.

Any one heard the Jutta Hipp disc..?

Dr Feelgood--------Malpractice -------(Grand Records). Wilko et al. Raw pub rock. Just what the doctor ordered. Fab music , very nice 1990 reissue, not a classic year for vinyl but this is great

Art Ensemble of Chicago------People in Sorrow------(Nessa ) yellow label for what it's worth. So many delicacies to found on this , it might take a lifetime to find them all. Really beautiful .

I'm a hesitant audiophile who has slowly upgraded his system over the years. Small incremental steps. I've heard benefit from better CD players, more expensive cartridges, new speakers and in the last 12 months adding a DAC and an even more expensive cartridge. I love great sound but have only so much to spend. All the changes I've made have made a difference. I'm with Lon regarding audio memory. It simply must exist, it's surely not placebo effect at work. With my new Dynavector cart I can hear details and a change in stereo presentation which I know I've not heard before , even if I've not spun that particular record for some time. In end if the day it should all be about the music it's just some hifi lets you hear it more easily and in greater detail.

I've heard massive differences with interconnects. I tried some Linn cables between TT and pre-amp and they strangled the sound rendering dull and wooly sounding.

Various artists --------One World Jazz--------(Adventures in Sound) A really bad idea of Feonard Leather to record a number of greats at different locations and overdub much of what is here. It's not totally without merit but solos that have been phoned-in were never likely to sound great.

Well I'm looking forward to THAT Sato-un Feeling by Big John Patton

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Embarrassed to say I've had this LP set for years but barely listened to it. Only cost around £25, which seemed like a bargain but then not playing it at all defeats logic. -
To answer my own question — yes, the new TYCJ has the original Mel Fuhrman overdubs. The disc (I received it this weekend) also has a much wider soundstage than the 1989/90 edition that Malcolm Addey worked on. Both sound good — I'm not going to ditch the 1990 disc. I've always loved Dewey Redman's entrance on "The Garden of Souls" — creepy, and who else has ever played like that? On the new TYCJ, you can hear finer details on how he's achieving that weird sound; soundstage-wise, it "appears" from the top-center, and fairly descends through Elvin's drums. Bizarre, in the best of ways. I think I like how Elvin's drums were handled better on the Addey edition, however, but maybe I'm just hearing how they were originally recorded. But, agreeing with comments above, the Monk TYCJ's sound good, and are a considerable improvement over the RVGs. In contrast, I prefer the Miles Davis TOCJ's to their new TYCJ counterparts. I hope this series adds at least another 100 titles. Your comments regarding Love Call prompted me to dig it out. I always liked this session a lot. I note in the liners to the 1990 issue that it was remixed from 4 track. I wonder what was used for the TYCJ, a further remix, the same 1990 mix or the original LP masters.

love that one....very nice

Circle----Paris Concert----(ECM) Triples my Corea holdings by purchasing this and Return to Forever LPs yesterday. Very different groups to say the least. This one is good enough to make me consider re-engage with Braxton's music. Paris Concert comes across as a real group effort.

I was playing this very edition yesterday. Love it.

Some very interesting comments here. My interest new music out strips my budget but what's more problematic for me is identifying clear recommendations. The general decline in jazz journalism means that a lot of this stuff gets minimal reviews. Views of posters here have become for me the most valuable tool of what to try next.
