  1. Ive been lucky enough to see both Han Bennink and Hamid Drake. The former with Eric Boeren's group and the latter with David S Ware. Bennink is amazing to watch, a real genius and I don't use that word lightly
  2. Much good music but also considerable chaff amongst the wheat. This set is a warts and more warts approach to Bud. It needed braver editorial decisions. Sometimes less really is more. Agreed. I find that his albums for Blue Note plus the two he made for RCA, 'Strictly Powell' and 'Swingin' with Bud', are more than enough for me. Well... while the point about the inconsistency of the Verve recordings is a good one, the early Verve dates from 1949-1951 are really as good as it gets. If I could have only one set of Bud Powell recordings, that would be it. I couldn't imagine any Bud Powell fan being content without them. I'd be happy with these sessions , without the rest
  3. You are responsible for my first vinyl order in a quarter of a century, Mark! Much as I hate the whole 'vinyl only' exclusivity, my Keith Tippett fixation would not let this pass! Will go straight to CD-R on arrival. Thanks for bringing it up. Heavens, I'm not sure I can shoulder the responsibility....you'll be buying a turntable next, ditching the beloved MP3 and buying opera box sets before you know it! I don't think you'll be disappointed by this - KT and the others are all on top form You are responsible for my first vinyl order in a quarter of a century, Mark! 4. Which living giants have you in mind. I find it a constant tension in resources both financial and time exploring jazz past and the future. Exploring the past is so much safer because so much of it has been critically review or become cult. It's harder work working out what's to follow of jazz/ improvised music produced today. So I'm all ears , what's new.
  5. Excellent session. Music isn't revelatory but it's very good and in very nice sound .
  6. Would that be the edited versions sans Konitz or the unedited as released ( at least partially ) by Verve on CD in the 90s? Or better still the whole shebang ? I'm hoping the latter.
  7. Excellent album, like this a lot

  9. I'm not sure which Atlantic reissue program you refer to. I have around 10 Japanese Atlantics 60th Anniversary issues - WPCR 2xxxxx, they all sound excellent. I wasn't aware that these issues were thought to suffer from loudness/compression etc.
  10. Jimmy Smith------Confirmation -----(Blue Note)Jazz file initial release from 1979
  11. If you end up liking Interstellar Space, I think you'd like Stellar Regions. The latter is, in my opinion, one of the most accessible late-period Coltrane records; I personally think it's a stronger record than Expression. Cosmic Music is more for Coltrane collectors and/or completists. The music is good, but (in my opinion) it's less essential. ______________________ Now — here's a question: I wonder if the Japanese SHM-CD of Interstellar Space will have the hidden track (or hidden "index") that the U.S. digipack edition contains. Hmmmmm......now you have me thinking, I really like 'Expression' , played it all the way through this afternoon. I got the distinct impression from the Penguin guide that "Stellar Regions" was just left-overs and not much meat.
  12. John Coltrane -------- Expression-----(UK stereo version of image above) Very good curtain call. Sound on this edition is very clear and not in the least bit muddy. I have a Jasmine LP edition too and it's not a patch on this one.
  13. Oh, I should get this. Did it come out on CD? MG Came across a copy of this today. Nice session , very well recorded.
  14. I've always wanted to hear " Interstellar Spaces" , so that's the only I went for. I'm not sure I need "Stellar Regions" or "Cosmic Music" judging by the reviews. The rest are pretty much covered by various vinyl editions.
  15. Patton's "That certain feeling" SHM-CD arrived today. I've nothing to compare it to but it sounds excellent and is a typical good BJP date.
  16. Mastering will no doubt show excessive compression and loudness.
  17. Russ Freeman/Richard Twardzik--------Trios-------( Vogue UK) DG , both sides equally brilliant.
  18. Cannonball Adderley------Them Dirty Blues -------( Riverside) mono DG Interdisc (UK?) pressing. Not a bad album perhaps not his best but very enjoyable
  19. Has any one experience of Bennie Green's "Walkin & Talkin'' ", I've this on TOCJ6540. Whilst there is great space or air around the instruments I find the disc a little aggressive sounding. Nothing too extreme but I wondered if this could be down to "loudness" issues I've seen mentioned. Anyone else heard this or other editions of this nice laid back date.
  20. some of this available on Spotify in fairly poor sound. This set should be interesting. The Jazz Oracle site mentions Wooding in the same breath as Duke and Henderson. I'm not sure he's really at that level from what little I've heard.
  21. Thanks for noting this. I got a copy from Soundohm as per your suggestion. Arrived very promptly. Music here seems very fine. I do like bass clarinet. Plenty of listening to had here. Packaging of this set is deluxe! Pleased you got it it. It's well worth it. I actually received a second set by mistake last week and wondered when I posted it on if it might be for you as it went north of the border thanks, that explains how my set from Italy appeared to have been posted in the UK.
  22. I'm sure I'll have passed "Summit meeting at Birdland" assuming wrongly that it was the Fats/Bud date from the same location. Any particular editions of this date that better sound wise than others?
  23. I checked out "Everything for Somebody" on Spotify enjoyed it. Thanks. Might buy list.
  24. Flurin you are quite correct. I suppose I hold some BN sessions quite dearly and it's those I'd replace if what I have is subpar. Interestingly regarding Demon Dance I let the RVG go and kept the McMaster. As I recall on my system the RVG sounded bloated in the mid band area where as the McMaster was cleaner. Neither has anything like a decent bass presence. Just goes to show beauty being in the eye of the beholder..... Regarding Luis Russell I've upgraded a handful of sides that I've found on 78. The sonic benefits of playing a 78 master pressing over a CD mastering make the gains fiddling around with these BN sessions seem really puny!
