It's a tricky question to answer accurately as I don't monitor what I listen to, but these are amongst the usual suspects Adderley--- Somethin' Else (BN) Monk's Music Monk: Brilliant Corners Ted Brown: Jazz of two cities Lucky Thompson: Body & Soul ( Nessa/ Ensayo) Cecil Payne/ Rolf Ericson: Transatlantic Wail (Pye) AEC: People in sorrow (Nessa) Lester Young- Jazz Giants 1956 (verve) Herbie Nichols- ( anything)

Hadn't realised that there was such a difference between the two formats. Are the Newport sets the core of the collection

The next question ( for me) will be whether to go for the LP or CD edition, "........choices, choices........

Mat Maneri/Lucian Ban New Quintet 3/29 NYC
Clunky replied to Steve Reynolds's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Sounds very interesting but I'm not clear if in your view Malaby's playing added or detracted from the music. There's nothing like hearing the music live to enthuse the soul. I've not come actors Ban at all,I'll need to look him up. -
He's trying to avoid being seen in the reflection of the mirror/picture behind Trane

I'd doubt the Copy protection had anything to do with RVG. I'm with Chuck here, RVG should be given more respect given his enormous contribution to the music. There is a risk of greatly exaggerating the defects of the RVG. A small number are less than ideal but should be seen in perspective to the vast number of sessions he's recorded or mastered.

Happy Belated 11th Birthday to the O-Board
Clunky replied to Indestructible!'s topic in Forums Discussion
Indeed thanks for keeping going with all the hassle that running this place must involve . Great place. -
Pola Negri-------------Black eyes/ Farewell my gypsy camp---------(HMV) c.1929 Great pair of sides by femme fatale, Polish born Negri, singing in Russian and released on an UK label . Not sure where is was recorded but it's great music and very evocative of the times.

Art Kahn-----Sometimes I'm happy/ When day is done-----(OKeh) Rec. June 1927, the only thing that distinguishes these sides is some nice solo work by an uncredited Eddie Lang. Both sides are described as "piano novelty " which is pretty accurate given the exceptionally lame singing Next Pavilion Players ------- I want to be happy / Tea for two------( Winner) UK Despite the billing two entirely separate bands, the Vagabonds with Adrian Rollini want to be happy ( but it's only 50/50 they'll succeed ) whilst the Henry Large orchestra stiffly play for their tea. Neither side is great but both have some charm.

I'm with Lon, they are startlingly bad. Having said that they are at the end of just 2 of the discs in what's a very generous package by any standards.
-
Arrived today . Disc 1 so far. First impression as good as you'd expect. Edit to say I've got to the bonus tracks on disc 1 and the SQ is terrible, swishy , all manner of extraneous sounds, switches from mono to crackly stereo - very poor.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Clunky replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Picked up a great condition SH copy of this last year. Lucky find ! Good for you. To me it also wasn't easy sourcing a new copy when I got it. Just to give an alternative view....... I like west coast jazz but find this set somewhat anaemic, it's all pretty uninvolved stuff. The set is well put together but certainly not worth shelling out too much. -
Up for air.

Listening to Aaron Sachs Quintette on my home system and it sounds good. The sound is a bit beefier than Bethlehems' often sound but that's not so bad as these recordings lacked vigour and were pretty sleepy judging by vinyl editions I have. The only one ( of these recent Japanese issues) I've slight concerns about is Stu Williamson's self titled CD, which sounds forced. I don't know any other version so it could be down to the recording.

I've seen him live twice within a few days. Once with The Liberation Orchestra where his tenor stylings could be compared to Chris Cheek and secondly in a trio setting. He came across very well in both settings. Having said that I've only a few of his recordings , which I don't play too often.

I'd suggest the Iridium box, the Moscow and Mestre discs, the Echo Echo Mirror House disc, and Trio (Glasgow) 2005 on Leo. Moscow on order . Thanks

Anthony Braxton ----The Complete Braxton 1971------(Arista/Freedom) AB thread prompts renewed acquaintance.
-
This is significantly better than you might think. Very evocative score. Jazz feel if not much improvising actually going on. Great release, thoroughly recommended

Yep, that's a common issue with these pressings, always thought it was top-end roll off. I've just two from this series Lee Morgan's -Sonic Boom and JOS' -Confirmation, both UK pressings which sound really nice.

6 Duos (Wesleyan)2006 is the only one I know, I enjoy it's delicacy with a dash of sousa. Frankly I'm pretty bamboozled by Braxton. There's just so much stuff , it's hard to know where to begin that it's easier not to bother. Having a said that I'm drawn in like a moth to a light. I'm interested to hear what he's doing now ( I mean last decade) as I have a smattering of CD/LPs covering his career to the late 80s.

listening to the Roebke for the first time - first impressions positive. It sounds just like you'd expect this line-up to sound (which for me is fine). Respect for the past but making music that's definitely now. somewhat like Berman, Stein, Rede in fact all of them seem to have achieved on their own recordings. I'm very impressed by most everything this generation of Chicago players are putting out So am I!! The consistently high standards they achieve does present the problem of which releases amongst the many to go for. I'm hoping Larry or any other members close to the scene will alert us appropriately.

Picked up a small number of 78s today. Fletcher Henderson -----I got to sing a torch song/ New King Porter Stomp-----(Columbia) CB701 I couldn't find the first title under Fletcher's name in Rust but did so under brother Horace. This UK issue was the first predating the US issue. Five Harmaniacs-----------It takes a good woman/ What makes my baby cry---------(Victor) USA Jug band from NY 1927. Marked country influence on this and not like any jug band I've heard.

Nice ! Mine's only a 47W63rd.. Nice ! Mine's only an RVG CD
-
Now .... Frank Lowe----------Fresh----------(Freedom) UK issue - these always sound decent and are generally inexpensive. Next.........some more Lacy... Steve Lacy - Andrea Centazzo-----------Clangs-------(Ictus Records) Italy . I like this one a lot.
