  1. Collin Wolcott--Grazing Dreams (ECM)
  2. Rusty Bryant--Soul Liberation (Prestige, purple label)
  3. No Coast Jazz is shown as available for pre-order on amazon.com, an April release.
  4. There was a recent ebay auction of a bunch of coverless Blue Note LPs from the Alfred Lion era (supposedly covers were destroyed by a flood but the LPs were said to be in excellent condition)--despite this story, the LPs sold for the most part at a pretty decent price. If it's a desired enough LP, you can always find another auction with a decent cover/trashed LP.
  5. Murder it was! The Hank Mobley BN1568 reached $3,618 The Lee Morgan BN1575 reached $3,494 The Lee Morgan Candy reached $2,835 The Kenny Dorham New Jazz reached $2,380 The Sonny Clark Dial S reached $2,035 and on and on... Who says we're in an economic recession? Would I rather have one "original" LP, or the entire Blue Note catalogue in the form of CDs? Hmmm.... I must be mad because I would take the entire catalogue as CDs.
  6. I heard him at Sweet Rhythm in New York. He had Billy Harper and Oliver Lake in his group. It was rather good.
  7. This weekend, two new CDs I rather liked were, Vijay Iyer with Prasanna and Nitin Mitta, Tirtha (ACT)--recorded in 2008 but newly released; and Kenny Werner, Balloons (Half Note), live at the Blue Note with David Sanchez, Randy Brecker, John Patitucci, and Antonio Sanchez.
  8. Terry Gibbs Big Band--Live at the Summit (Verve) Ahmad Jamal--All of Me (Argo)
  9. Red Holloway with jack McDuff--Cookin' Together (Prestige, gold label mono)
  10. Osie Johnson's All Stars--Swingin' Sounds (Jazztone)
  11. Dexter Gordon and Gene Ammons--The Chase (Prestige, purple label) Houston person--Truth (Prestige, blue label)
  12. I was thinking of ordering it, maybe.
  13. This is terrible, if true. I just saw him perform in January and also last October, and he was in excellent form both times.

  15. I've seen Scott Hamilton live once--in a George Wein led group as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival--I had a similar reaction of boredom, but in this case Buddy Tate and Norris Turney were also on stage so all was not lost.
  16. Johnny Smith Plus the Trio (Roost, blue label) Father Tom Vaughn, Motor City Soul (RCA black dog) (Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge)
  17. It seems that my copy of this CD was lost in the mail, but I must say that the woman who fulfills the orders was very nice and sent me a replacement copy (autographed by Mr. Tacuma even), which I am finally getting to listen to this morning.
  18. Gene Ammons/Etta Jones/Jack McDuff--Soul Summit Volume 2 (Prestige, blue label)
  19. Who's in the lineup now? I really enjoyed seeing them a couple of years ago in San Antonio, with Booby, Dave Douglas, Zenon, Rosnes, and Redman. This is the lineup: Miguel Zenón – Alto Saxophone Mark Turner – Tenor Saxophone Avishai Cohen – Trumpet Robin Eubanks – Trombone Stefon Harris – Vibraphone Edward Simon – Piano Matt Penman – Bass Eric Harland – Drums Three concerts in Texas: Hogg Memorial Auditorium, University of Texas Austin, TX March 24 Buy tickets R. 20. I hate it when a Half Price Books store has a buyer who thinks he knows something (they usually don't) and tries to price an LP as a collectible. It defeats the whole point of the store. I recently ran across a green label Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot volume at a small store which was priced at $100. Ha ha. That being said, I've found far more prime LPs priced low, than the reverse. Fortunately, the main HPB in Dallas is not like that at all--they seem to largely price based on condition. I've found so many great classical LPs at HPB for little money that I've had to declare a moratorium.
  21. That's one of my favorites of the Art Yard reissues and well worth a search.
  22. Jam Session Record No. 103--Live at the Trade Winds (Sony Criss, Wardell Gray, Chet Baker, jack Montrose, Marty Paich, Harry Babison, etc.) Bobby Hutcherson--The View From Within (Blue Note)
  23. I haven't heard Azar Lawrence's Mystic Journey, but both Prayer for My Ancestors and Speak the Word are very good recent quartet recordings, featuring dynamic piano from Nate Morgan. http://www.amazon.com/Prayer-My-Ancestors-Azar-Lawrence/dp/B002ML8R0A/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1299427777&sr=1-3 http://www.amazon.com/Speak-Word-Azar-Lawrence/dp/B001FBSHFS/ref=pd_sim_m_3
  24. Luiz Bonfa -- Softly (Epic) Freddie Hubbard -- Straight Life (CTI)
