RIP. In addition to the previously mentioned "Some Like It Hot" (an all-time favorite) and "The Defiant Ones", I thought he gave a great performance in "The Boston Strangler".

For my part, I apologize. A bit slow on the uptake, but I think I've figured out what's going on.

Song title, thread title... I know—that being all, it's a stretch. Imagine if we posted matching song titles for every thread title. What's the big deal here? The "non sequitur thread tangent" has been a frequent presence here for as long as I can remember, and IMO is often quite clever and entertaining- why has it suddenly become an issue? Are we getting all serious around here now? My respects to Jim Heseldsen for his achievements, may he rest in piece. But the way he went is so ironic that it's funny. You just know the comics are having a heyday with this.

I thought it was a very interesting piece. I like the way he integrated the orchestral players with the jazz players. Also some nice orchestration, lots of different colors. I thought all the soloists played great (ditto on Sherman Irby!) and the piece had a lot of nice grooves- it didn't feel clunky considering all the players involved. The NY Phil trombonist Joe Alessi is a monster! I really like the way Wynton used the harmon mutes (with stems in) in the brass to create some eerie vocal effects. I started the broadcast not knowing what to expect and have to say I was impressed.

How so? When I listen to the 1966 Don Ellis, I hear plenty of interesting musical ideas mixed in with some relentlessly over-the-top and (to my ears) corny brass playing. So what's "corny"- the playing or the arrangements? What does that mean? Too loud? Out of tune? Is "corny" synonymous with "college"? I understand that you're not a big band fan, but I'm just trying to figure out your comments. There are many variables involved here- the quality of the writing, the level of proficiency of the players, the recording quality. I'm not sure I would like big band music either by listening to just the recording you mentioned. Also, where does the "college-oriented" part come in? You mean big bands who get players from college jazz programs, or are you expressing a general opinion about college jazz programs? I think your comment was interesting, Guy, I'm just looking for a little clarification because it's a pretty sweeping generalization that I hear a lot.

Great game between the Saints and Niners. If SF didn't have all those turnovers in the red zone it likely would have been a different outcome. Alex Smith looked great on SF's drive to tie the score. And Brees' subsequent drive was equally impressive. That was about the ugliest field goal I've ever seen. But- yeah Saints! Two and eaux!

Definitely. As I said earlier in this thread, these horn bands were my transition to jazz. I played in a couple different horn bands in HS and we played a bunch of Chicago and BS&T as well as Crusaders, Tower of Power and EW&F. After that came the big bands, then JJ and Carl Fontana, etc. But I'll always have fond memories of those horn bands. Talking specifically about BS&T, I agree that they peaked quickly and that the shine came off, but even on the later records there usually were one or two great cuts. I remember a later record called "No Sweat" that had a couple great Dave Bargeron bone solos that I still like to listen to. It was the one with the cover pic of the band in a sauna- I heard that a similar scene in the first Blues Brothers movie (where they were in the sauna with Steve Lawrence) was a takeoff of that cover (and Lou Marini was in both!). Speaking of 70s horns bands, anyone remember the short-lived but high energy fusion band "Matrix"? Weren't they based in Kansas?

I really like his tribute to Thad Jones. He plays a contrabass sax on Greetings and Salutations and it's bizarre. He is a talented musician.

Didn't Bob Cooper make a record called Shifting winds that featured a lot of alternative woodwind instruments? Also, if you like unusual instruments, check out Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He plays several that I've only heard of through him.
