Yeah, I've been thinking of another joint-effort proposal but the cost would be higher and the interest probably lower.

That was crazy.

Die Hard is a Christmas Movie?
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Up, because of this: My own observations: It's f-ing annoying the way this is shot. It's way the f more annoying what this guy believes. "How" it became a Christmas movie, according to him, is ludicrous. It's a "Christmas" movie to some people because of the setting, music, and that message scrawled on the sweatshirt. Now this gets deep into politics so opinions will vary, but I know this: I have no desire to watch Die Hart for the 250th time. I'm done. This man has a net worth of $5 million dollars. He did quite well for himself in the unregulated capitalism of Hollywood, where they shamelessly kowtow to true authoritarians/evil MFers in China. Maybe I missed it when he said something about the willingness of Hollywood to look the other way so they can do business with China? Oh and did anyone know that he served time in Federal prison for perjury and lying to an FBI agent? I bet the thought they were authoritarians too. I didn't look for further details so if anyone wants to enlighten me about the circumstances, feel free. Your thoughts? -
Oh man Allen did not want to read that.

I'm certain I saw a post from someone who said he is fine, very busy right now. -
While doing a search I stumbled onto this.

Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse
Dan Gould replied to Mark13's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well not to out myself but I have neither of the box sets you mention. I just find it a bit of major overkill, and very disappointing in the context of our expectation that Zev was being brought in for new BN issues of archival material by their contracted musicians, not a clear-out-the-vault exercise to extract money from rabid vinyl fans. I for one am very satisfied with whatever takes were deemed "best" when they issued the three disc box 20 or so years ago. -

Wasn't it supposed to be established that the Fresh Sounds was a different location than the Lighthouse, so different performances than what was recorded by BN? Then I don't think you want to pitch your copy of that release. If it turns out that the Fresh Sounds recording will be duplicated in this too-much-of-a-good-thing release, that's even more reason to ignore this one. -

I said this before in the other thread, but there's no way I am going to be in for 8 discs with so many performances of the same tunes, when I have the three disc BN and the Fresh Sounds two discs from the same time frame. And many of you knew me as Mogie Man at the old BNBB. -
Cassette recordings can be really variable and in odd ways. I have used Jim's and Allen's help on a transfer of a recording of the Percy France quartet, giving me indications of what key they were playing in and what key was likely. Right in the middle of a section of tunes that needed a 1/2 step correction they played "A Train" in C, and this track needed no adjustment. How can that be, I thought. (And eventually I remembered I had another recording and verified that they do sound exactly the same.) And there was no doubt that the batteries on this recording device were not new or mostly fresh, as the first tune was a blues in F# which Allen told me they'd never play in that key, so it was 1/2 step off right at jump ... and the final two tracks were full steps off, with Percy sounding like Mickey Mouse on his last stage announcement, and Castle Rock sounding like he was playing an alto.

I think we bulldozed past or over an enormous part of the migration process ... AAJ. There was an invasion. Imagine if you were a denizen of Cheers and everybody knew your name, and all of a sudden Gary's Old Town Tavern folks filled the bar to overflowing. Carla didn't have time for a wisecrack put-down. And Gary turned out to be a bit of a dick and tossed both me and Chuck out on our butts. Also, to Norm's disappointment, ferns. My analogy has gone off the rails but you remember ... BNBB folks congregated there, didn't fit in necessarily, the owner was heavy-handed in moderation, banned me, banned Chuck, banned a few more I am sure. That's the missing link between BNBB going dark for a period of time, and the ultimate migration here.

OTOH David BN did "hire" him. It would be a BN decision either way and certainly with his input. (I put hire in scare quotes because to date, I don't know that we have any evidence via a release that he's done a damn thing yet.) -
That may be true but I do recall the BNBB being down entirely, like dead URL for a period of time. I want to say that Lon hipped me to this place - just checking, I came in March 7 2003.
-
No the BNBB just disappeared one day. A fairly large group came over thru almost immediate email word of mouth and then there was another group that found their way in the next ... I don't know probably six months maybe a little longer.

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks. I can report now that my sister-in-law is on my shit list. And her sister isn't exactly happy either even if she won't use that terminology. Bob said to Patty that his temperature was 100.7. She heard "107" and remarkably, did not exclaim "A hundred and seven????!!!!" which would have cut this "crisis" off right at the start when Bob would have said "NO, One hundred POINT seven." Then my wife wouldn't have spent Friday feeling terrified about her brother's condition. Unbelievable. He's got a minor cold for all we know. I guess we'll have confirmation when he feels better, hopefully, in a few days. -

My wife got a call from her sister today. Sister lives with their Mom and her sister in Jupiter Florida. Their brother lives nearby in Palm Beach Gardens. Seems that yesterday Bob ran into their mother at the local Sam's Club, gave her a hug and helped her load up. Today he had a temperature of 107. And apparently that didn't earn him a bed at the hospital. So in addition to being worried about their brother, now they have to worry about Mom and Aunt Lyn who are 78-80 years old. And Patty is morbidly obese so if she gets it from Bob thru Mom, who knows ... -
that doesn't surprise me Larry - any fan of the music should be interested in the tales he has to tell. Nevertheless, "and the circus was back in town" was pretty harsh to my ears (I think that's what you wrote?). So I remain curious about that change and if he noticed any critical commentary then or later ...
-
Wow that is sad and surprising news. A very fine player in any context and that's way too young.
-
I am definitely interested though the hardcover price seems steep. A little concerned though how much is given over to his discography? I'd be interested in a meaty book about his career and everybody he ran into ... and whether he paid any attention to the critical voices, like Larry's, who rejected his later style.

I never bought the "sell out" accusation myself! -
I purchased the Vee Jay 45; the Hollywood single I got from a kind soul on the board, unfortunately at least a couple of generations removed on cassette. I do not know of other 45s that weren't sourced from the LPs on BN and Argo.
