Yes but rejected as too common.

It was a very difficult time, with emotions bubbling up sometimes nearly out of nowhere but I wanted to let everyone know that their thoughts were appreciated and ... that come early May we will have a new Karelian Bear Dog companion for Gracie! We will be picking seventh out of these two litters: http://www.simplesite.com/avbeardog/6616828 http://www.simplesite.com/avbeardog/6616824 If we pick a female we are going with "Ella" for the First Lady of Song, but if we choose a male, which seems most likely, the finalists are: Mobley Mogie Riley (B.B. King's given name) Louis (because I'd like to introduce two Bear Dogs as "Ella and Louis" but that would come sometime in the future after Gracie leaves us, unless we start with Louis and then get a female companion for him) Right now I am leaning most toward Riley but I am willing to entertain additional suggestions, or thoughts on the above options.

GRANTSTAND is good, right? (Grant Green)
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Well at least I got the Vee Jay part right. What makes you think that Michael has had a chance at searching for it? I believe the Vee Jay tapes belong to a British firm now? They've definitely ignored what is in there as I've never seen the Baby Face Willette 45 show up on any Vee Jay comp. You'd think they'd have put it out after Baby Face got a nice boost in stature during the BN reissue boom. -

IIRC the earliest session was a Vee Jay date with an R&B band. -
Please Vote! Should the Blindfold Test Be Discontinued?
Dan Gould replied to Hot Ptah's topic in Blindfold Test
Well I vote "yes keep it going" if only because I have one coming up, not to mention the fact that I've done more of these than anybody else (I think). Now I've got to buckle down among all the boxes in the new Plant City abode and finish up April so I can send it off. -
Well first of all welcome to the board from a fellow Gene Harris Fanatic. I didn't realize there were so many of us. It's actually very hard for me to comment about the stylistic differences between the two records. I was so disappointed with Genie in my Soul that it did not make the first move after it's purchase. It was only after I had pitched the record that I had contact with Janie Harris and bought Our Love Is Here to Stay. Recently I've had Genie in My Soul on my radar for reacquisition but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Personally I trust Janie explicitly that Our Love Is Here to Stay is her husband, and Occam's Razor would suggest that Genie in My Soul would also be Gene. One possible answer to the differences that I can come up with is that by 1959 Gene had some national exposure and was a "Blue Note artist". Maybe Jubilee got in touch with him and thought they could get another record done, but didn't want to make it sound too much like the guy on Blue Note and asked him to adjust accordingly? Is that even possible? Just a thought I've entertained ... Anyway Bradley, there's a whole nother batch of audio evidence about this Gene Harris person. Check out these two threads: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/65465-stereo-gems-label-newark-nj/ http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/76659-mystery-gene-harris-45-part-deux/ So the new question is, was there a second Gene Harris or even a third Gene Harris? Bradley I am going to shoot you a PM. Thanks again, hope you'll hang around the board some more and not just when Gene Harris gets mentioned.

Gotcha Larry, thanks. The only comment of yours I'd amend is that Gene's playing did change between the Blue Note years and the Concord years, with the Three Sounds being a unified band and Gene's playing being a little more subtle/varied (?) while the Concord records, particularly the ones that Gene led, were more Gene plus supporting players (and a guitarist for another solo voice). I always felt that Gene's playing showed more of an OP influence in his later years. Except for, you know, an actual proclivity for the blues. There, now I've done it.

Emphasis mine. Funny how three letters can change the meaning of a sentence. So Harris doesn't help but the rest of the band is fine, am I reading that correctly? Is it the relentlessly bluesy swing that you find monotonous or boring or predictable? Or does Harris' style not serve the music? Just trying to get a handle on why that "but" is in there. Thanks for indulging me.

Have you heard Bobby Pierce's "New York" (Muse, 1974)?
Dan Gould replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Been a while since I've heard New York and I wouldn't have realized off hand that Billy Mitchell was on it so I should revisit. But I have to say I am quite intrigued by the more recent recording - loves me some Rickey Woodard. Pierce played some nice piano on a Gene Harris tribute set, Three More Sounds: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Three-More-Sounds-A-Musical-Tribute-to-Gene-Harris-CD-BP-Records-2003-/251651715493?hash=item3a979c71a5:g:UT4AAOSwDk5UHaFp -

Blindfold Tests online listening; please read and respond
Dan Gould replied to tkeith's topic in Blindfold Test
And so they did for me - at work. Guess I need to look into what update(s) might be lacking - or since I'll be working from home starting Feb 29 and will be bringing my workstation to the new house, I can just make the workstation computer the one for BFTs. Good work, Thom! -

What Thom does is fantastic, however I do have some thoughts. </Austin Powers> Play buttons didn't work right away and left me wondering if I needed some sort of update, then on the third try track 1 started up. So maybe some sort of notation that play isn't supposed to be immediate? It seems as though the old server buffered much quicker. -
So, my fantasy would be that it's the Crystal Ballroom tapes that are in releasable shape, and next up will be: 4-10-66 HANK MOBLEY, tenor sax; McCOY TYNER, piano; JACK DEJOHNETTE, drums; EDDIE MARSHALL, bass (Crystal Ballroom)

And since it is, perhaps there are more of those cassettes that are salvageable. I'd really like to know if this is a one-off or a new Uptown source of more archival releases.

Seriously Tim? Pitchers who work the count or have the bat control to hit to the right side and move a runner? The few pitchers who can kinda sorta every-once-in-a-blue moon look like they know what they are doing are the exception that proves the rule: Pitchers suck at hitting. Most are lucky to take four pitches before turning around and sitting down on the bench. You're lucky if you have a pitcher who can get a bunt down. You're unbelievably lucky if he can grind a bat or move a runner or elevate a pitch to get a sac fly. Pitchers taking their hacks may be baseball as it was originally conceived but that doesn't make it sacrosanct.

Thad Jones
Dan Gould replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Very nice piece and what an exciting release coming very soon. -
And only a few weeks wait this time? Awesome! And it just so happens that Feb 26 is the moving date for Plant City so this is going to be my own personal housewarming gift to myself!! Better make sure I update my shipping address in Amazon. So the only question that comes to mind is whether this is a stray Left Bank tape making it's way to Uptown or are there more in the pipeline? For that matter will we ever see more of the Piccadily tapes? It's like 2 or 3 years since the Hank was released, isn't it?

Plant City FL Here We Come?!
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks for the welcome Moms and thanks especially for the lay of the land, music-wise. I only knew about Vinyl Fever which I've visited a couple of times when seeing friends but I understood had closed down a year or more ago. So I had no idea what other options existed. As far as baseball goes not going anywhere near Yankee land but as long as the Rays stay in St Pete, my beloved Red Sox visit 9 games a year and that's much better than the rare Red Sox appearance in south Florida. I hate the monstrosity the Rays play in but when you get down to it, in the middle of a Tampa summer it's sure as hell a more comfortable place to watch a game than Marlins park.
