  1. He's talking about what Alfred did with the sessions he purchased, not what Michael did forty years after. And the simple answer is, why put out an 'old' Donald Byrd recording when Alfred could put out a new one?
  2. With Freddie Garcia on the mound in Game 4 and facing Kershaw if they make it to a Game 5? Braves are in deep trouble.
  3. Not surprising but very sad. He'll be remembered for all those Blue Note dates but its good that he was able to perform and received some of his just due in the last years of his life. RIP.
  4. Wow did A-Rod just raise the stakes. And I read earlier this week that his arbitration defense is "I never knew they were illegal substances". Interesting that he files suit a week into the arbitration process - is this an indication that they know its not going well, so they need to go pursue monetary damages through the courts?
  5. I'm not sure but wasn't the 'rejected' Grant Green/Gene Harris recording with Gene on organ? Definitely a must-have.
  6. Just got a great idea for a themed BFT so I think I'm in for one more. Anytime February 2014 and later is good for me. Thanks.
  7. If Pence is going to be your main bat, your pitching better be extraordinary. Otherwise, you've put your hopes into a solid but far from anything remotely resembling a 'special' player. Edit to add: Who'll also be on the wrong side of 30 for the entire length of his contract.
  8. Massive over-pay. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/28/giants-overcommit-to-hunter-pence/
  9. But you're missing the fact that the Rays and the Indians get two chances to win one and be in the post-season, while the Rangers would only get one chance. I didn't realize why the Rangers would be in that position, but my assumption was that getting the second game at home was consolation for the fact that they only get one chance to win and move on. I'm probably over thinking it but my preference is for that three-games-in-three days scenario, each of which would be treated like an elimination game for giving starters the hook and using everybody out of the bullpen ... then the 'winner' can come to Fenway on Friday, take their whoopin' like men.
  10. Well I am of two minds when it comes to the Rays sudden struggles. Them missing the playoffs would be a nice insult to Maddon's ego - but I am not sure I want to risk facing the Rangers in the ALDS, as the Sox have not played well against them in several years. One thing is for sure - the AL Wild Card race is exactly what they were hoping for when they went to the new system.
  11. Per the comments, at least some are sourced from Dime. One has a comment from an O-member who recognized his own recording.
  12. Is there an updated total now that checks should be arriving in the PO box?
  13. Nice. I am so looking forward to this disc/DVD.
  14. I'm not sure which is more surprising, the way that the Red Sox are streaking or the way that the Rangers are collapsing. Can they arrest the skid or are the Indians/Orioles/Yanks going to sneak in somehow? All I am sure of is that I want the Sox to hang on to the number one seed in the AL and face the winner of the Wild Card game. I don't want the A's or Tigers in a short series, it really is an advantage to face a wild card winner who could have to throw their third best starter in the first game, if they end up playing a tie-breaker before the play-in game rather than another division winner who has time to set up their rotation.
  15. http://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Lounge-Live-Grey-All-Stars/dp/B004NMWNEC I forgot Pete Minger is on trumpet so its not the exact same lineup. Just discovered I do have the Stash CD, so I guess I paid $6 for three songs. Still not bad.
  16. Thanks everybody, its been a great birthday so far - the Red Sox won (and the Yankees lost); FSU had a tiny scare then won easily (and the Yankees lost) and I had a delicious dinner with my wife followed by an hour at a used record store I haven't been to in probably three years, maybe more. Sue bought more than I did but I am looking forward to hearing The Al Grey-Jimmy Forrest Quintet, Live at Rick's. Had no idea there was another set recorded in Chicago; for years I've had the recording from a gig in south Florida. Nice to hear Shirley Scott on piano. (As I check AMG, looks like some tunes from this LP are missing from the Stash CD, just as well as I don't have that one, I had the third live set this group did.) And did I mention the Yanks lost?
