I agree but these aren't piecemeal, as I think of it, in the sense that both sides come back with whatever changes they will now offer. Many of them there is no movement on at all by the PA (and some MLB calls non-starters) and others, the players move further away instead of any movement toward a compromise. Seems that daily meetings this week have nothing to do with serious negotiations and is just for show.

More unseriousness from the PA: New proposal, big increase from previous ask on minimum salary. Fuck 'em.

Small enough for four drink glasses not plates. I kinda thought Slugs didn't have a kitchen ... ?

John, do you listen much at all to Morgan's 50s work? Just curious. As for the photo, this is like, the best photo, non Francis Wolff Division, of Hank.

And considering how many recordings he made and having glimpsed a photo of your music room, that is no small accomplishment! -
Which One Drops off Your Listening List?

I sometimes wonder to myself if something happened, would I go to the expense of reassembling every Horace Silver or Mobley or Morgan CD I've collected? Somehow I think I wouldn't but hopefully wouldn't get to that point. Fortunately I do not worry about space because of the decision to switch over to binders many years ago when I also sold an enormous amount of CDs. Most of the binders are CDRs though some are commercial discs, and I bundled up the inserts in alphabetical order when they went into the sleeves. I was disappointed to discover recently that those old rubber bands have snapped in most cases, and also dried out and left residue on the front and back inserts of each bundle. But then I remember that used CDs have almost no value anymore, so who cares? Seriously, though I haven't seen your house, but a switch to binders would end your space concerns in all likelihood. -
Definitely sad to hear, a fine businessman and gentleman in all senses of the word. I hope his survivors know how many people appreciated him.

I will re-assert that the player's aren't negotiating in good faith or with any serious desire for an agreement. That fund that they moved a measly $5 million closer to the owner's proposal before (my gross number was wrong, they wanted $110 and went to $105 on prior counter-proposal)? That was the proposed fund for pre-arb players to get a bonus. And now their newest proposal isn't $100 mill or even still $105. Not even back to $110, but new ask is $115. In addition, as MLB.com is reporting: Prior to Thursday, the MLBPA had not moved from its November proposal on any of the core issues including minimum salaries, Super 2 eligibility, the competitive balance tax threshold, and the size of both a Draft lottery and an expanded postseason. Thursday marked a slight move in Super 2 eligibility, though one unlikely to move the sides toward a new agreement. ****************** Seriously: FUCK the PA when they've gone this late and don't want to negotiate seriously and won't consider Federal arbitration.

This. She was kind of at the right place at the right/wrong time. Hubby did nothing after the fact to try to get his wife what one might say she 'deserved'. After she walked out of that studio and took the session fee payment, her rights more or less ended. Things that happened after that, yeah, naif or whatever, at some point you have to take responsibility. Somehow and for some reason, I am kind of glad to know that Cybil Shepherd turned him down. But no one tell Chewy.

Glad to realize that the discs on the table are both new and old, so to speak. -

I am sure we're in a different place for acquisitions Ken, but how many times do you listen to something new before shelving? I have to hear at least twice, that's for sure. I was just surprised that I had enough of the Messengers disc after only two. -
So at Christmas I used an amazon gift card for: The Messengers in Japan "new" BN Houston Person, Live in Paris Roy Hargrove/Mulgrew Miller In Harmony I managed one listen to all in January and have circled back to them now, starting with the Messengers set. I normally try to listen to new music three times minimum before shelving it. Yet I find myself ready to shelve the Messengers disc after two listens, and anticipate at least the full three for the other two releases and quite possibly more. Based on first listen I might stick with the Person disc beyond three times. So if you own at least two of these, curious what say you? Did any disappoint? Did any surprise so delightfully you want to hear many times? More generally, what do your listening habits dictate, if they dictate anything? Any other recent purchases that surprised or disappointed?

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/15/books/pj-orourke-dead.html Only 74 - I realize that his politics might not have appealed to many in this crowd, but he could write, and he was funny. There's also a personal connection - my older brother, who worked as a journalist and writer, kept me aware of O'Rourke's work. He loved him, not least since they shared an alma mater, Miami of Ohio. Now both are gone and O'Rourke close to 5 years to the day.

I guess I was lucky that I considered the sound of the John Lewis collaboration to be perfectly acceptable .... can't recall which other black and white Argo I ever purchased. I think maybe I got 1-3 as CDRs from somebody else.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

That's it I think I am going to have to defriend you on FB. It was fun while it lasted, Bresna. -
Ted Panken conducted an interview of LD for the Smithsonian. Whether he qualifies as "knowledgeable" I will leave up to you. https://tedpanken.wordpress.com/2014/11/01/for-lou-donaldsons-86th-birthday-the-complete-transcript-of-a-june-2012-conversation-for-the-smithsonian-jazz-oral-history-project/

No doubt an unfortunate result of the determination to go black & white but that's exactly how I got my copy of that music. The pressing was fine, and I want to say, cheap (it was many moons ago). I've always been more concerned with the music than the presentation - I worked pretty hard to find the Jazztet recordings on vinyl and doing that kept me from purchasing the Mosaic set when it was available.

Long time since I've listened to Bennie but thinking very seriously about pulling several discs, inspired by this thread. Bennie communicates a great deal of joy in his playing, a characteristic I always find extremely attractive. Should add: I have to check that I have that 45 Sessions disc (almost sure) and how about this one issued seeming three ways - Bennie Green as leader, Gene Ammons as leader (aka Juggin Around) and the two as co-leaders. Anyway you get its some fine music. https://www.discogs.com/master/442725-Benny-Green-The-Swinginest

Is there particular significance to that?

Jazz musicians in TV commercials. Can you recall any?
Dan Gould replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Without a doubt there was an Ella tv ad for Memorex - many in fact. If there any with Count Basie the same search below doesn't turn them up. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ella+firtzgerald+memorex -
I realize that MLB.com is basically the owner's mouthpiece until a new CBA is reached but even allowing for that and the fact that I am not seeking out alternative reporting, I cannot say that the PA is impressing me with their desire to deal. Last time they countered a proposal of $20 million for something or other by going from $105 mil to $100 mil? That's not a serious bargaining tactic, IMO. Its kind of like the Old Man on Pawn Stars making a new offer lower than the old one, when a customer is trying to squeeze more out of him. I also do not see how a proposal to eliminate revenue sharing helps competitiveness or the league. What exactly is their rationale? Right now a delay in the season is more on the players than the owners, IMO. (Also not a good look that the players refused arbitration. Not binding arbitration, mind you. Just plain old Federal-mediated arbitration.)
