Not on your list, but the thread here on the Big Ears festival always makes it seem like a worthwhile event

Lou Donaldson JazzTimes Interview
Dub Modal replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Revisiting the article, he's essentially saying Mulligan played without feeling and perhaps had a compromised sound. Is that a common, at least among musicians, sentiment toward Mulligan? I've never heard anything like that aimed at GM before. -
100%. Especially in light of these articles: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/03/microsoft-terminates-its-tay-ai-chatbot-after-she-turns-into-a-nazi/ https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/mar/13/artificial-intelligence-ai-abuses-fascism-donald-trump https://www.wired.co.uk/article/facebook-teaches-bots-how-to-negotiate-and-lie

Yep. I have none of those.

A true public servant. I applaud your work I've been listening to Notes From Big Sur this AM. Well recorded, well played and very enjoyable. 90s jazz at its finest. And now I'm streaming the Swiss Radio Days release this thread highlights. Very very good.

Lol my hot take on #2's drummer was on Tony Williams I knew it had to be a Rushmore guy, and Tony's one of my favorite Rushmore guys. Oof. And checking out Jerome Richardson's discography, I've heard none of these. Will have to check them out at this point.

Streaming Discovery! now which is a Columbia album and his debut. I definitely hear the Trane influence. Wow. I definitely much prefer his later stuff where he has his own voice.

1 - Reminds me of a Chico Hamilton record with the hollerin' but it ain't him. I've heard this before but can't place it. The drums and bass really drive the hell out of this song and I like it. 2 - I like the song but for some reason the drumming style seems out of place, maybe a bit antiquated for the composition style? The bass player is on another planet in comparison. On that I'm thinking the drums hold the song's development back a little. Going to be a travesty of a take of the drummer is a Rushmore-esque legend but that's a BFT hot take for you. 3 - Familiar quote by the sax at the head which leads into a jumbled mess that straightens out quickly. Kind of reminds me of those Tyner 70s compositions but it's not him...there's a bit of a lull at the 3-3.5 minute mark, seems the players are being deferential a bit. The piano player comes in to bring it home but the sax/ensemble could step up a bit more I think...good song though. 4 - I've heard this one too. From the Black Jazz label maybe? The Awakening? Nah...The electric piano and drums carry the vibe and the entire production. Is that a Bari sax in there? I like it 5 - Nice tune. Solo piano is a nice change of pace. 6 - Old school. Bass player separate from the B3 means it's got to be Shirley Scott because it ain't McDuff. And if it's Scott, the sax is either Turrentine or Jaws. I'll go with Jaws. Scott, man she is almost ALMOST going off the res with with some of those notes. Keeps it anchored though. Who's the other horn player though? 7 - This is outside of what I typically enjoy because the vocals interfere instead of add to the song. The horn/drums/bass trio plays very well on the other hand. This is something that sounds like it would work better in a live setting rather than this recording. At least to me...I keep thinking about David Lee Roth "I got it made, got it made, got it made...I'm hot for teacher" with the cadence of these vocals. Wouldn't be surprised if DLR lifted it from this song actually. 8 - James Bond theme song-ish intro. Is it a Shelly Manne date? Breezy composition but cohesively played. If not Manne (or even if it is) is that Tjader on vibes? 9 - Big wall of attack on this song and I think recording limitations hinder how fully the sound of what they're playing comes through. Previn? Classical elements are there. 10 - Is this Walt & Sun Ra? Can't be...can it? Has some barrell house or rag time throwback quality to it. But then goes just far enough from that to indicate an influence on more free styles of playing, esp from the pianist. Interesting song. 11 - Real Latin style in that I don't hear a trap kit - full percussive set being used. Vocals are disappointing. Playing otherwise is not. 12 - Reminiscent of a Hal Russell style. Not sure it's him but it's right there with some of the NRG material. Most aren't going to dig that electric guitar style. I kind of like the freak out aspect of this one. Short song probably because it has to be. 13 - Very nice change of pace. Didn't expect vocals actually. Kind of a downer but not a deal breaker. The ensemble backing her works it seamlessly. A bunch of pros, or a pro at the conductor controls. Again, the kind of thing that would work better in a live setting but here the recording doesn't diminish the feel or emotional power. No guesses but this is great. Thanks for this one! Really enjoyable and interesting experience.

Maybe RCA filed a C&D?

Guy must have the best publicist in the history of the genre. -
I found those BN albums boring as well, which I didn't expect. I'll have to check those out. I've ignored almost all of his back catalog outside of that Resonance Slugs reissue.

On point about Marsalis. Also good comment on the Leo Gooden record - read & subsequently listened to that album after a write up about it on Jazz Wax. -
I just told a buddy of mine that these guys are one of my favorite discoveries of the year. Absolutely love their grooves and style.
-
Lol, they love some blue/gray/black/white don't they? The ocean in the rest of the warmer world is blue too guys!
-
I can see that. My starting point for him were the ECMs and for some reason - maybe the modernity of that setting - I had/have no real interest in hearing what he did in decades past. It's interesting to me how his somewhat concurrent output on different labels is so starkly different. That's why a blanket dismissal of his work seems strange. Indeed. To me, there's some real magic on his ECM records.
-
Really? Wow, that's kind of unexpected. While I don't really dig his Blue Note output, his ECM albums are some of the strongest not just in his catalog but across that entire label's.
-
Down for the Arild quartet but damn, get some fresh album cover ideas ECM! Their themes of sparse winter/cold landscapes are played out at this point, and really are an antithesis of spontaneous group creativity.
-
Amen. Or read their respective 10-Ks and listen to the investor calls. Stock losses alone are poor barometers of broad economic indications.
-
Enjoyed it! Thanks for putting it together.

Tried Yes' Tales last night as a result of reading this thread and got about a song and half in. Not terrible but I couldn't hang all the way through. I dig their earlier albums and then Relayer which was after Tales. Holds up better for me than LZ.

Too Many LPs - Prepping for a Yard Sale
Dub Modal replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Had a yard sale 2 weeks ago. No vinyl but an older guy showed up looking for it. If I advertised vinyl I bet it'd be a pretty good cross section of demos that would show out, esp if I spelled out genres available That advertising by way of craigslist, FB, next door etc. really worked btw. -
Return Of The Film Corner Thread

Lol this is hot garbage. Is this what traffics in hard right circles these days? Unfortunately I'm not surprised. I feel sorry for you and anyone fooled by this nonsense. Dennis Prager is a fucking joke as is every blowhard sitting on those plush leather couches. They don't give a shit about democracy, just how they can fleece gullible ignoramouses and line their pockets. You're doing their publicity for them homie. If they're not giving you a check then you're a sucker. -
Just to note I don't live in Beantown and don't pull for the Red Sox. Just went because that's what tourists do, esp in an old ball park like theirs.

About a year pre-Covid I went to a Red Sox game over Labor Day where they played the 'stros. Those Houston fans travelled in impressive numbers and represented their team well. On the other hand I've been to a Phillies game in the standing room area and those fans are passionate, as most Philly fans are regardless of sport. Hope to see a good series.
