  1. Harold Land's Take Aim, but on the Mighty Quinn CD version which looks like this: Maybe a prime candidate for a BN vinyl reissue? Great album proper, even without the live bonus track included on this CD. The track Reflections is my favorite here.
  2. Yeah, this component of laundering via visual art is something I find hard to separate from that universe, like it’s an integral aspect of the whole production.
  3. I’ve only seen videos of these concerts that included backstage interviews from Getz. He seemed perturbed bc in a sense it was like he was getting upstaged by Baker in more ways than one. Chet’s playing here is certainly enjoyable.
  4. Re Invictus he & the Hollands certainly hit the mark with the Chairmen of the Board. RIP to a real talent.

  8. I'm playing the deluxe release with the bonus track Untitled Ballad (To Her Ladyship). It's ok. The title track and Aisha steal the show for me.
  9. Tyner and Davis solos on the title track are incredible. I hear a Stanley Cowell connection in song style and Tyner’s playing. Like this was an influence on SC.

  11. Getting into jazz just a few years ago led me into getting more exposure to Blakey’s playing. Those Jazz Messengers Blue Notes can be found easily on the used market and as a result I picked up a bunch. Definitely enjoy Blakey’s style. For whatever reason, when looking back on those initial buying days it does seem that Roach’s albums, outside of those with Clifford Brown, just aren’t as ubiquitous. So I haven’t listened to him as much. I first really tuned in to Roach’s playing on Slide Hampton’s Drum Suite. Roach blew me away on that one. Definitely the first time I picked up on what others have described as him playing the kit like a horn. It was an intense experience. Based on that, I’d go Roach here but mainly because I’m not as familiar. Would be interesting on a blind test if I could pick out either one. I have my doubts in that regard. I don’t think Roach growled as much as Blakey, so that would be a major hint I guess.

  14. Interesting and enjoyable selection of songs, aside from the first one which I ended up skipping after a minute or so. Tracks 3 & 5 are favorites, 15 is good too. Someone on the mic lets the cat out of the bag on the guitarist at the end of 6 but no idea who the others are.

  17. That’s better than what happened to Shaw’s radio station, which sold out to some national Christian trash, the kind that plays those radio soaps. Ugh. NC State’s 88.1 channel went to this indie alt programming decades ago, away from heavy metal (!) at the time. They still retain specialty shows on the weekend for various other genres which is cool. But their main indie alt programming is at least current and plays nothing you’d hear on any other station. All student-run as well, and the engineering students put in real work to keep all the technical aspects rolling.
  18. Who or what other organization floats legit business endeavors to cover lucrative undercurrents of illegal activities? Would there be opportunities for these entities/persons like Hefner’s enterprises to interact on various ventures? And if said ventures were successful, would there be reason to form a confederation of sorts to continue exploration and execution of further opportunities? Probably. And if all that happened (for decades) and continues to happen, essentially publicly known but hushed, what makes them able to skirt LEO’s so effectively? Hmmm…

  20. I agree with a de-programming/re-sensitizing effort. Would also be a good theme for a playlist/mixtape and maybe even a multi-media component.
  21. Haven’t watched it. He seemed to be basically a pimp and a conduit of blackmail and extortion schemes. Of course that’s connected to some unsavory elements that were glossed over by his legitimate business ventures. Does that touch on that aspect?
  22. In the same Kudu/CTI vein there’s GW Jr’s Hydra & Knucklehead. Outside of that label there’s McDuff’s Hunk of Funk. Loran’s Dance from Idris too. For the term “dumb” I’m taking that as a position against a presented norm of jazz music and fans being hard to access and stuffy. That’s not actually the case of course, but maybe a common perception among non jazz listeners…?
