Sold by the Chive. Per a comment at quora, Bill allowed them use of this pic (from a Paul Thomas Anderson movie I think) bc he liked their charity donations. So people who think it looks cool to have a sticker of Murray on their car post it up. I'd bet if said folks actually met him or ran into him they'd think twice about that.

Haven't seen the Coltrane sticker but it's derived from another bumper sticker about the Mummy, which said something like (and I'm paraphrasing here): "I'd rather be watching the cinematic masterpiece The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz" - with the same sort of syntax and design as this Coltrane one. I'm surprised the GQ article doesn't mention that unless I missed it. Either way, I hope people end up buying/streaming Alice after seeing this.

Walter Zuber Armstrong's Alpha & Omega - Live from 1973 at Western Washington State College now Western Washington U in Bellingham, WA. Strong Pacific vibes on this one. I don't know much at all about the band: Dan O'Brien on bass, Michael-Ann Burnett - cello, Bill Grauss - drums, Martin Lund - piano with Mr. Armstrong turning in duties on bass clarinet, flute, alto & piccolo flute & percussion. Excellent album. Looks like it's never been reissued as it was on his own World Artists label. Armstrong passed in 1998.

I saw the 180 proof reissue in the bins yesterday. Passed on it but listening to the only track I can find streaming "Inside Ourselves". Good stuff. SQ on the LP reissue is supposed to be not great, but it may be the only reasonable way to hear this album unless the Japanese CD is that much better. Anyway, the title track is a nice morning tune.

Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?
Dub Modal replied to northwood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
From what I remember in his interviews, Evans seemed to prefer the trio setting as well. Seemed like he was always searching for that mind-meld that he and LaFaro had, and referenced trio settings as the only place he could really find that. I don't know a lot about it all, but I think LaFaro really pushed him both while playing and in life. Had LaFaro lived, he may have been successful in getting Evans off the junk and who knows what would've ended up happening at that point. -
Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?
Dub Modal replied to northwood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I bought all my Evans albums early on when starting to listen to jazz and for whatever reason I can hardly listen to them now. One of the exceptions is the material with Shelly Manne. The only box I got was the Fantasy one and thankfully at a hefty discount. I won’t be buying anymore in the near future. -
When I first listened to this album I had a vision of Miles and Sly Stone going deep into this musical jungle and meeting up with Lee Perry. I never thought of it as controversial, but I never read Crouch either. Seems controversial would be saying that these loops and textures met the Mizell’s and formed a tributary to hip hop. I’m probably wrong though.

Wow. Snag it if you don’t have it

Return Of The Film Corner Thread

Going the horror route these days: Candyman remake/sequel - a must see Hellraiser 2 (super weird and pretty disgusting but also silly and campy - tighter editing esp toward the end would have helped) Creepshow 2 - terrible House - campy and kind of funny but also pretty bad More misses than hits with 70s/80s horror camp stuff but 'tis the season. -
I don't know any of the behind the scenes stuff outside of what's generally available online via BN, wiki, etc.

Speaking of the Mizzel's, I don't think they've issued any of those BNs in the TP series, but have done 3(?) in their Classic reissue line. Maybe Joe Harley isn't a fan of them either. I like 'em and am a little surprised to read about how they've been controversial ever since first released. Guess since they're more tinged with jazz elements and not strictly jazz records coming from a font of hard bop that BN was, that is/was the issue - the main one at least.

Lol, You think they were Venutians?

Heads up for anyone interested, Real Gone Records has all of their in-stock Black Jazz LP titles on sale for $11.99: https://realgonemusic.com/collections/vinyl/black-jazz I've got the Pure Pleasure reissue LP of Nurnen and am very happy with it. No idea about tape provenance but I recommend this to anyone who wants an LP of this album. I've got a few Pure Pleasure reissues and am happy with them all FWIW. The only Real Gone LP I have is the reissue of Tapscott's The Giant Is Awakened and it's quality too.

Can definitely understand that. There’s no good reason to abandon a music library just for this. From the perspective of accessing these platforms via Droid, that aspect of YT Music is a real advantage unless one really loves podcasts. Spotify almost owns that market at this point.
-
Trying out YT Music and it’s a very similar interface compared to Spotify. One advantage is that YT can access “videos” of songs and albums that technically haven’t been released on other platforms, but uploaded to YT via users. Pretty big advantage I have to say as you can find stuff Apple and Spotify will likely never have.

Love this album and plan on picking this reissue up soon.

I don't have any Freddie Roach leader albums and don't listen to him often even though I love the B3. He was actually my 3rd guess but I left it with the two I mentioned b/c I didn't want 3 strikes already on the first song! There's more bass in there than I usually associate with Freddie even though I'm not overly familiar with him. I was aware of his R&B inflection but not much beyond that. I've got the Quebec Spring album he's on but admittedly I haven't listened to that one much at all. I'll have to revisit it and check out his other albums. This is one of the things I love about BFTs.

Freddie Roach? He was Prestige/BN exclusive pretty much.

Yeah, that actually worked. Very unexpected.

It’s a fun and eclectic mix. Definitely unexpected but enjoyable to listen to.

1- Early Jack McDuff on B3? If not him (because maybe too much bass) then Earl Van Dyke? Punchy R&B style reminiscent of both 2- MOA advertisement as in the jukebox company? Interesting 3- B3 comping in a pyschedelic way almost. At times it seems to mimic vibes sounds. Fun track. 4- Quirky, with some interesting samples/layers. House artist? Opening sample sounds like something from Can. Not sure of the sax. 5- This sounds like one of those shits from a cassette you buy from Squidco's front page. Those things sell out in maybe a week and good luck finding a copy. I imagine there's someone out there with a treasure trove of these things that they run through a basic tape deck and know all of them by heart. If not that, there's a Japanese film score feel about it. My favorite track so far. Should be on mainstream terrestrial radio. 6- Sun Ra-ish opening. Doesn't sound like a Ra-style production though. Too slick. Someone was listening though b/c there's Ra elements all over this. Lee Perry percussion style around that 3:45 mark for a little bit too. Listen to Zap Pow's River Stone and you'll know what I'm referencing (Maybe. The Voodooism comp is the easiest way to get that track for comparison). 7- When the room starts asking me questions I get a little weirded out. Narrator's running through late 20th century events like Forrest Gump, only African American-centric. Here comes the pee pee and doo doo. Reminds me of Bookman from Seinfeld. 8- This is like if Johnny Hartman woke up at 4am, rolled directly out of bed into the recording booth to sing this song. Late at night, brown liquor in hand and I can connect.

I’m doing a free trial of Spotify premium right now and I have no complaints other than the fact there’s a lot of jazz it’s missing but nothing’s perfect and I think that’s true regardless of platform (same for reggae and other niche genres that aren’t current pop and related). It aligns with what Apple Music offers pretty much. I’m trying YT Music via trial next. Spotify’s artist radio stations are fun too. I’ll prob return to Spotify over Apple when it’s all said and done.

Same thoughts here

I think it varies but I’m no expert. Digital jazz discographies are mostly a mess and it’s definitely not the genre du jour their main audience comes for.
