  1. This seems off the mark for this forum. First, there's definitely not enough forum members for it to be crawling with anything. Its barely a scamper here. And if there's deeper jazz convos going on elsewhere online I'd love to know. The jazz nerd-ery going on here is the most informative I've found because a decent representation of posters here have lived in that very world in various roles to varying degrees. That kind of experience and knowledge isn't easy to come by on a regular basis. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I would also say the collector tag/avoidance of politics suits the Hoffman boards way better than here. If you've spent any time there in the jazz corners you know what I'm talking about. This forum isn't perfect. Reactionary political views are unfortunately well represented even within this small-ish membership. But if evidence is offered with a coherent and thoughtful editorial, you'll get better results.
  2. A lot of time on the road with Carney driving. They probably listened to a lot of radio.
  3. And a helluva Blue Note album 👍 EVD recorded by RVG - Motown & BN intersection
  4. Track 15 is the Ball and Chain from this album
  5. Track 8 could be the last track on this one Helluva line up if so. Track 6, is it Mal Waldron? Track 10 should be obvious to some folks here. I can't put my finger on it. Jacquet was a good guess but that's not it. Arnett Cobb? Track 11, is it Fred Jackson? YES it is. Song 12 from this Ah, and I have Track 12 as well. This one song # 9 Track 14, is that Art Pepper?
  6. It's definitely sad what happened to Mingus. ALS is awful. Still going through some of his albums here: Interesting cover alternative on this Australian release of Mingusx5. And then the expanded Carnegie Hall set: On the original release, it was only Perdido & C Jam Blues which is unfortunate because the other songs are incredibly strong - well, Pullen's Big Alice is just ok. But the version here of Fables is awesome.
  7. Nice. How'd it turn out? This was my first listen of Cumbia and I dug it. A lot. Noticed the second track was recorded in Italy with what looks like a good amount of Italian musicians. Anyone know the story as to how that came about?
  8. My condolences to you and family
  9. Didn't know you could mute folks. Not inclined to do it anyway. However, if I could mute the album covers with feet thread to keep it from popping up on the feed that would be great. Hope Catesta is OK.
  10. After spending some time with Braxton's 9 Compositions I moved to Mingus largely due to the convo in the Mingus 70s Atlantic box thread. Cued up a non-Atlantic with Mingus Dynasty but then went to Changes, Changes Two & Cumbia and Jazz Fusion. Good albums all, but Dynasty is something special. And dare I say that I hear a connection between it and Braxton's work. I'm not a musician so I can't say specifically what that connection is, but my brain was bridging them together somehow. Also, Cumbia's got some long songs that are broken up into specific passages. I thought it was interesting that those passages aren't named or broken up with movement titles. It's almost like they're medleys in some spots. These Mingus album covers though 😆
  11. @Justin V you're a great dad 👍 Raising 'em right.
  12. Contrabass flutes sound incredible. Some cool fucking shit.
  13. I'm way too cynical to believe she actually listened to these. Nice take. I haven't heard live Cumbia so need to check that out.
  14. I'm literally lol'ing at this. 😂
  15. It would be interesting to know the other projects hampered by licensing issues, especially those pipeline projects that they've kept under wraps. A few Mary Lou tracks were included on their Jazz Piano Mosaic Single CD and they're worth the price of admission.
  16. Indeed. I've got the CDs that capture most but of course I'm missing the trombone material. Hard to justify buying the set for it but I'd love to get it at some point
  17. Lol my preferred local used record store had a Tristano set for resale at $140 a couple of weeks ago. That shit is $99 new.
  18. Disc 1 which is Braxton's Composition 350. The ensemble work is amazing.
  19. I'm just digging into @AllenLowe's work Letter to Esperanza: Or: The Goyim Will Not Replace Me: Looking for Tenure in All the Wrong Places; Writings on life, music, race, and culture I'm digging it so far, but I share Allen's skepticism of Spalding's SAL project, which I developed after reading and listening to that album (and 12 Little Spells); although my skepticism is from a distance rather than Allen's direct experience. Looking forward to reading the rest...
  20. I came down harsh on Mosaic but I want to make it clear that those are how I feel about their products and business model today. What they did and accomplished for jazz artists long forgotten and/or underrepresented is unparalleled and worthy of respect and honor. They set an impressively high bar for reissues that few have been able to match or exceed. FTR, I don't think they intentionally neglected female artists and it's unfair to pass judgment on that because we don't know what projects they had or have in the pipeline that can't get done due to reasons outside of their control. In light of the legacy they've left the world they absolutely deserve the benefit of the doubt.
  21. I thought UME owned them outright after someone retired. Looks like it's still Cuscuna & Wenzel running the show. Aside from that error on my part, it appears licensing and locating masters are their largest hurdles. For all we know, they have female sets in the pipeline but that can't get executed due to licensing.
  22. Track 9 is the only one I've heard before. Nice work Big Al!
  23. 1 - Amazing Grace. Sounds like bagpipes. Nice to hear this instrumental version as it brings out why this song has become special in American musical vernacular. I'm not a fan of the overuse of its truncated form in just about every public quasi-spiritual setting these days but this rendering works. No guesses though. 2 - Familiar tune and playing but no guesses. Probably master musicians involved but the song got a bit long in the tooth after 3 mins or so. 3 - I dig the solo in the intro but the orchestration is a bit maudlin. Only guess is that the tune is a standard. 4 - no guesses 5 - Familiar tune, no guesses. 6 - Enjoyable bass-led tune but no guesses. 7 - The guitar makes it but the sax player is nice as well. I like the space they used in this song. 8 - Bass sounds like it's from this 70s. Nice track. Big-bandish with a marimba(?) & live - no guesses but intrigued as to who this is. 9 - Sound reminds me of Bee Hive a bit. Horns are dry, groove is good. Nice song. 10 - Terrible sound but a great tune. 40s recording maybe? 11 - R&B vibe here and I like the organ. Yeah, this is a fun one. Bass player here instead of B3 bass correct? If so, I'll guess either Scott or McDuff. Sax is the star though. Guitar is rather forgettable. 12 - Booker Ervin? I dig the bass player here. 13 - Sax player is all over that horn. Decent song. No guesses though. 14 - Drums are hilariously bad in terms of recording. Awesome. Song is familiar...Bass solo is in there too. 15 - No guesses here either. Singer has a good voice though. Thanks for this BFT. Some familiar songs that I've either heard before or that I actually have the album of. My guessing game is totally off today though. Not that it's ever really good mind you. Looking forward to revisiting this one.
