  1. Milt Jackson by far over Tjader, whose music I do enjoy. Hard to decide on Mabern or Hicks. Love them both. Looking over my collection and what I have of both, I'll go with Hicks by the slimmest of margins. Jacquet all day Glover's performances at Smalls (listening to one now) are what tilted my preference in her favor. Nubya Garcia or Muriel Grossman?
  2. Had to do some research on this one. I'm familiar with Aldana but not Glover...so off to bandcamp for some listening. Not digging in on a position at the moment but right now I'd go with Glover. Hoping to hear more from each of them that's not so much in that warmed over neo hard bop vein, at least from the studio. If anyone's interested, this link takes you to some recordings done by Glover last month (songs 5 & 8 on tenor, song 10 on soprano and for me I enjoyed her tenor playing more): https://arthirahara.bandcamp.com/album/open-sky Aldana's latest: https://melissaaldana.bandcamp.com/ Chicago Sun Ra or NYC Sun Ra?
  3. amen First listen of the morning: Then:
  4. A perfect hip hop album if there ever was one. Pac and co in top form and the production is excellent.
  5. That Johnny Richards Mosaic Select is my least favorite of that line. It's got moments but they're too far and in between to really dig into the whole set. And it's only 3 CDs. Typically those inspire me to look more deeply into an artist's discography but that one stopped me cold. This morning: Which I enjoyed and then something completely different:
  6. VMP just announced one. Recently some their limited LP editions follow reissues from UK based labels so maybe that will happen in reverse with this one?
  7. I dig the Mizell Bros' productions from that era. And totally agree that Shorter's Etc. cover from the LT series is a classic and should've been the only cover it ever had. Perfect. Some of the others definitely work as well, and indeed better than the follow up edits. Also, I thought these LT series covers were more under the influence of ECM rather than CTI in that they used a rather abstract photo that hinted/suggested a connection to the title and/or music contained and rarely if ever used shots of people. I guess maybe the cropping/border used on the LT series evoked some of the style of those earlier CTIs like Wave or some of the Wes Montgomery albums...? Using hind sight on this, it seems to me that those LT series covers help tell the story about the era they were released in a little better than the revisions, which do seem to muddy the BN story esp if like me one is coming to jazz at a much later time. I think maybe the only revised cover I like is Solid, but that's because it's a badass shot of Grant Green...but then the LT cover is good too.
  8. This morning so far:
  9. These Heath arrangements on Big Sax are top notch
  10. The ballad closer on this one, My One & Only Love, is a real beaut. And now:
  11. Alfa Mist's album from 2019. Gets lumped in with "jazz" but it's roots are more tied to fusion IMO. Some really nice tunes reminiscent of Sade and a healthy J Dilla influence.
  12. I guess this cover is a love/hate thing...regardless, the music is spectacular. Might - just might - be my favorite of Green's Blue Notes. His only trio session, at least for BN, correct? (well, sans B3)
  13. Reading through this via the link in Now Playing...I have no Prestige Nelson in my collection. Actually the only Nelson album I have is Skull Session. Will have to give these an ear...
  14. This morning's session so far:
  15. Nice. I suspected there was a Legends of Acid Jazz volume but I didnt find it on discogs yesterday.
  16. Well, my partial Sonny Stitt Roost Mosaic doesn't include disc 8 with Paul Weeden. Oh well...vinyl may not be too hard to track down.
  17. He is killing it!
  18. Same here. It's ridiculously good
  19. Damn. That sucked for Weeden and co.
  20. The interactions between these guys is fun to watch. At the 8ish minute mark McGhee skips over Stitt while JJ is soloing and starts snapping and bouncing again, and looks back at Stitt and seems to give a little business back to him. Classic stuff.
  21. Wow. Who was in Stitt’s working band at that point?
  22. He's comes across like an on-court Jordan. All biz and tolerating no nonsense, with almost everything carrying the edge of competition.
