First: Then: -
It really is a great song. My favorite of this BFT so far.
-
I'm almost thinking it may be him on 3 as well but I'm not ready to commit to that...
-
I see #11 is Fuller, but from the 50s and not the 60s. For some reason his tone on his early recordings is recognizable but not necessarily in a good way, even though I really like his playing. Hard to believe that #5 is Frisell on guitar. I've been listening to a good amount of him lately and absolutely didn't recognize his playing.

1 - Well, these players are so good they make this sound like it's easy to do. Swinging the hell out of this tune. Wow. Very nice. Sounds like it's from the 50s, or maybe early 60s. With the stereo separation I'm guessing maybe it's from Contemporary? And if so, would it be Art Pepper? Whoever it is, I dig it. 2 - Lovely piano intro. And a really nice trombone lead. No guesses, but love the tune. Sounds like a mid-60s or so recording. 3 - The guitar and overall production sound make me think at least 90s and possibly newer than that. That guitar sound reminds me of some ECM records...is this Stanko with Bro on guitar? 4 - 'Round Midnight is the tune? If not, it's reminding me of that song for some reason. 5 - African-esque intro with the guitar and drums like that...when the guitar comes back it's definitely sounding like a player coming from that tradition. It's a softer production style than what I'm used to hearing from those types of recordings however. I'd guess it's a recent recording but no guesses as to who. Part of me wants to guess one of those Tony Allen records but I don't think that's it. 6 - I like the mood of this song and the playing is really nice. Sounds like it's from the 60s. Burrell on guitar? Good lord that drummer starting at about the 5:20 mark... 7 - Monk composition by chance? Newer production style...and is that a cello being played? 8 - Man, not sure about this one. Guitarist is real fast but not sure I like how it sounds, or how the ensemble fits together... 9 - Great playing. Song isn't really my thing...no guesses here 10 - Cinematic/soundtrack-ish composition...Very nice in parts but not sure about the whole. 11 - Nice tune, and the playing is good. Not a fan of how the trombone sounds but the solo is enjoyable regardless. Is this a 60s Curtis Fuller song? 12 - No guesses. Very nice composition and playing. 13 - And I've got no idea here. Not many times I've heard an organ/acoustic guitar pairing with horns. So this is unique, at least for me.

Disc 2 from that set, followed by: Very nice comp of pre-Itals songs. -
While listening to samples of that Luba Raushiek album I found this:

Some live sides this morning: then:

I really enjoy this album. Salvador isn't ever mentioned in the all time great jazz guitar discussions that I've read, but his tone and playing make for great listening. And the band on this album is top notch.

Yeah, the US women will be lucky to medal. Sweden looks tough. -
CD 1 of this last night as I love the small group stuff that Jimmy & Wes did. Some of the tunes were taken from Just Walkin' which had previously unissued takes when it was released in '71. There's something about how these guys play together that intrigues me...anyway, led me to more B3 magic from this: Disc 1. I've got no idea what Jack Dieval is doing on piano, and I don't care because the music here is terrific.

No, unless I’m mistaken that tower has more “gold.”
-
Hmmm...I think I recognize that Tower behind him lol.

Don't have the live CD but have seen videos of them online. Love Lazuli though. I do think that there's been some recent gems from his later trios via Resonance and Elemental and maybe some others. Unfortunately, as one combs through discogs there's so many gray marketed CDs and otherwise bootlegged albums which really clog things up and that's a shame. Disc 2 which is mostly Smokin' At the Half Note with Wynton Kelly's trio.

When I corresponded with Nimbus in March of last year, it was with a guy named Matthew. He had a lot of info on The Call album that I was asking about but I have no idea if he's running the show. He did say he was a sound engineer and was concerned with audio quality on the LPs they produced, as he wanted to make sure they released quality product.
-
As an owner of the CD I'd rec trying the LP first. Edit to add, if you're interested, message me and I'll send a track so you can hear it. Very cool!
-
I have this on CD but the sound is a bit thin. How's the LP? The music is tight...

Your Favorite Jazz Records of the 1980s?
Dub Modal replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, that's why I asked earlier. Helms was an ultra conservative fire brand from NC whose legacy is fully entrenched with the current senate minority. There's no way he had any insight into 80s jazz. He was too busy whistling Dixie -

Were these writers behaving as a kind of vanguard for a struggling domestic genre at the time, and one they may have had some sort of personal stake in? Just wondering if that contributed a bit to the US-centric focus. Not that it's wrong if that was the case, just more illustrative of the times. -

That Jesse Helms entry has to be satire, correct? -

Saw Branford come out and play a couple of songs with Dave Matthews (yeah, I know) which was totally unexpected. Show was this past Friday in Raleigh. Branford lives, at least part time, in Durham so I'm guessing Dave hit him up to come out and jam a bit. Sound wasn't good at all at the amphitheater, esp in the cheap seats. But he got a good reception from the crowd before, during and after playing. -
HBD to a Great. If you haven't picked up his Jazz Dance Suites album from 2019, which I think is his most recent release, I definitely recommend it: https://charlesmcpherson.com/jazz-dance-suites/

Just about all collectibles have seen sharp spikes in value these last 1.5-2 years. Definitely an avenue to wash money.

Thanks for this rec. Enjoyed the '46 Carnegie Hall show so much that I'm looking for some good First Herd comps/shows, etc.
