  1. Yes! "Black Unstoppable" is also available on DVD from Delmark (recorded at the Velvet Lounge), and it's very good. "Xenogenesis Suite" is her latest release, and is on Firehouse 12 (not Delmark, as I may have implied above). I've have not heard it yet, but will be downloading or buying the CD soon. More discussion about Ms. Mitchell here: Profile of Flutist Nicole Mitchell
  2. Some new stuff from Delmark: Fred Anderson - Timeless Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble - Black Unstoppable and Xenogenesis Suite I already have these on CD... both highly recommended: Keefe Jackson's Fast Citizens - Ready Everyday and Keefe Jackson's Project Project - Just Like This
  3. We were also there, and damn glad we brought ear plugs!
  4. Elliot Humberto Kavee, although not always. I find Rudresh Mahanthapp's Mother Tongue almost unlistenable at times, especially when he does that (almost death-metal like) fast roll thing. Seems totally out of place to me. But, I really like Black Water, so maybe it's just that one record.
  5. I'm fascinated by the relatively rapid price changes on the two Evans sets, and the Dolphy Prestige, as well. Laws of supply and demand in action. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn that Newbury has some "internet savvy" folks that watch threads like this, on this and other internet forums.
  6. In addition to our esteemed moderator, it looks like Chicago is well represented in that list. Nice to see Steve Swell in there, too. That guy is nothing short of amazing.
  7. Open Office does not automatically save to MS Word or Excel formats, but it's very easy to do a "Save As..", and specify "Microsoft Work 97/2000/XP(.doc)" for documents, or "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls)" for spreadsheets. My kids use Open Office for homework all the time, and have never had any problems with their work being recognized by MS Word/Excel. I have also used it for many business documents, and never had any incompatibilities. The other direction seems to work well too -- Open Office can open documents originally created in MS Office. One caveat: interoperability with MS Office 2007 may present some problems, but it looks like the latest version of Open Office supports it. It hasn't been an issue for me yet, as almost all companies I work with aren't running Office 2007 yet. Networking, printing, scanning, and wireless are all supported in Ubuntu Linux, and work quite well. Download it, burn a CD, and give it a try. You can boot directly from the CD, and although it may run slightly slower, you can get a feel for how it works without actually installing it to the hard drive. Office Office is included on the Ubuntu CD. It's not perfect, but neither is Windoze!
  8. One problem is that many of those sites are not offering mediocre mp3's. Many are high quality VBR, or even lossless format.
  9. It's still available for download at EMusic... the samples sound great. Looking forward to hearing the whole album when my downloads refresh.
  10. I jumped on... Somehow, I just knew you would be at this party! Where's Ron S.?
  11. When I've compared, a bit "better" (it's a bit sharper, less thick sounding (?)) The RVG Remaster of "Out There" sounds great to these ears... presumably better than both the OJC and the box set?
  12. AWESOME! Thanks for the tip, six string! I just ordered one, too. OK... who's next??
  13. Has anybody received any money from this yet? I finally got around to filling mine out (did it on-line, quick and easy). Requests have to be submitted by May 30.
  14. Thanks for the reminder... tuning in now!
  15. New stuff from Vijay Iyer added today: Vijay Iyer, "Tragicomic" (Sunnyside Records) V.I., piano; Rudresh Mahanthappa, alto saxophone; Stephan Crump, bass; Marcus Gilmore, drums. Fieldwork, "Door" (Pi Recordings) V.I., piano; Steve Lehman, alto saxophone; Tyshawn Sorey, drums.
  16. I saw Randy last night, with a CD-R in hand... I contemplated grabbing it and running! Seriously, looking forward to hearing the new tunes. What I heard live a few weeks ago sounded great!
  17. I'm "like that". I freely admit it. Intelligent women understand it. It still does not excuse the boys club mentality we have here, on occasion.
  18. Dang, Sangrey... for the first time (ever!), I'm surprised at your (apparently) flippant response. This isn't about being non-offensive to everybody, everywhere, at all times.
