  3. ...and if you need any further incentive, here's Nate's review in Paris Transatlantic. Also, check out his link to the article in "Wired".
  4. Good idea... I just ordered Raw Materials and Black Water. We'll expect your review of "Codebook" post-haste!
  5. Bringing this one up again -- I saw Mahanthappa at Edgefest this year, and I've been listening to Codebook (Pi) a lot this year. Vijay Iyer - piano, Francois Moutin - bass, Dan Weiss - drums. From start to finish, a very interesting and compelling record. I'm also really enjoying Iyer's Blood Sutra. My first record I purchased with Iyer/Mahanthappa was Reimaging (2005), but although I liked that one immediately, I find myself returning to Codebook and Blood Sutra most often. I also have "Mother Tongue" and Iyer's "Panoptic Modes". I wasn't aware of Black Water, but I'll be looking for that one. Any other recommendations? Anybody familiar with the duet recording "Raw Materials"?
  6. Thanks, Tjazz,
  7. Same here, but I was absolutely astounded to see this box set on the shelf at a local Best Buy: Jelly Roll Morton - The Complete Library of Congress Recordings (Rounder) I think is was $89, which is a great price for this set... still regretting not grabbing it while I was there. Looks like it's still available on line at that price.
  8. Allow me to answer for him: "who?" (we'll give him extra credit for looking up Cecil Taylor!)
  9. "presentation at my music college"?? How about a presentation on Anthony Braxton or Roscoe Mitchell?
  10. While I don't look much like him (yet, anyway!), I'll go with Onslow. Bone idle, drinking beer, watching the telly. Works for me!
  11. Thanks! Listening to it now... very interesting record. EMusic says "released in 2007" -- I thought it was a new recording until I looked it up and saw it was recorded in 1969.
  12. ...damn, too slow on the Pepper:-( me, too. damn. With Onslow as your avatar, you wouldn't be fast! Dude, I'm not slow... I'm "bone idle". It's a philosophical position!
  13. ...damn, too slow on the Pepper:-( me, too. damn.
  14. I should clarify my earlier post: Joe G. introduced us to his friend Jamie last night at the GR gig. Executive summary: Boogaloo sister #1 (or is it #2??) = very attractive young lady.
  15. One thought: from my perspective, if you think Chris was that far out of line, then that reflects on him (and him only) as opposed to the band and this forum in general. I (perhaps naively) believe that any reasonable person that finds this thread from Google would realize that.
  16. Caught them last night in GR... well worth the trip. Some heavy snow on the way back. Live music FOUR times this week for me! I also saw the "Truth in Jazz" orchestra on Tuesday night -- a truly wonderful big band that plays locally. Will be going to a big high school Christmas production on Saturday, my daughter is in the choir, son in orchestra. It's been a good week!
  17. Not my style, either. But, you might reconsider if you ever meet a "Boogaloo Sister"! (aren't you supposed to be in Ann Arbor tonight??)
  18. Mine also arrived yesterday... and I did spend a fair amount of time overseas during that time frame -- might be as much as 12 weeks. I always have to wonder how much the attorneys make from this "settlements" like this. I've got no love for credit card companies, but...
  19. If by "Charlie Parker" you mean "Styx" and by "Studio Chronicle" you mean "Chronicles", I believe you.
  20. It's difficult to put into words what this board has meant to me over the last four years... as a direct result of this community, I've met a whole bunch of great people (both in-person on "on-line"), been introduced to a truly amazing amount of great music, and learned so much, about jazz and other things as well. Thanks, Jim!
  21. I can't make it this weekend, but I'm tentatively planning on seeing them in GR at Founders on Thursday.
  22. This year's (and last year's as well) Skid family Christmas tree was decorated to the sounds of Big Al's BFT... big , except, of course, for track #3. Highly recommended!
  23. Grand Rapids Art Museum this afternoon: a clarinet-clarinet-bassoon trio, playing music from the Baroque and Renaissance eras. Very interesting!
  24. I have "Song for My Sister", but haven't played it much yet... (relatively) new releases: Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake - From the River to the Ocean Steve Lacy - Roswell Rudd Quartet - Early and Late Rudresh Mahanthappa - Codebook Vijay Iyer - Blood Sutra New to me this year: Roswell Rudd - Regeneration Dave Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds Paul Desmond - Gerry Mulligan: Two of a Mind Mal Waldon & Steve Lacy - Live at Dreher Paris 1981 Dexter Gordon - Both Sides of Midnight Anthony Braxton Quartet - Conventry 1985
  25. Christiern's windows shots are very nice! Here's my desktop... this photo is from last summer's vacation at Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario:
