  1. Nope, those are from Allmusic.com reviews, probably Scott Yanow. Whenever I see "open-eared" in a review, I'd assume that many people immediately equate that with "difficult" or "avant-garde" music. If that's true, the potential tragedy is that the review might turn away otherwise curious people from some great music.
  2. I'm not exactly sure why it bugs me so much, but I'd like to see open-eared listener and all its variants permanently banned. A small sampling: "...enjoyable set which is definitely for the open-eared due to the wide variety of styles." "...repeated listenings will reveal a great deal of beauty for some open-eared listeners" "...recommended to open-eared listeners" "...exotic instruments and three strings to create some particularly unusual music. It's for the open-eared listener only." "...open-eared listeners are advised to search for this important historical set." "...this LP, which is worth a search by open-eared listeners" "...well worth several listens by open-eared (and tolerant) jazz fans" "...this rather esoteric CD is strictly for open-eared modern classical listeners" "...certainly not for everyone's taste, the truly open-eared will find the innovative results quite intriguing" "...it is recommended strictly for the open-eared listener who does not demand that all jazz swing conventionally."
  3. I want to know if the Cadence Crew sock is really the most comfortable sock ever made. They look comfortable, but I'm just not convinced that they'll bring rejuvenation to walking, hiking, or just relaxing.
  4. Another vote for individual CDs. I have the box, but made CD-Rs of Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain, and Quiet Nights.
  5. How come shit like this always seems to happen in Michigan? The lawn mower dude, the 9-1-1 drunk lady, being banned from a buffet... Time for you guys in Texas to pull some crazy newsworthy stunt... Aggie, you're up!
  6. I have $20 that says you'd pay $150 for a _really_ good book about Braxton or Roscoe Mitchell!
  7. A hearty second to all the recommendations thus far... and in particular, track down this one: The Ellington Suites (Fantasy/Pablo) The Queen's Suite reminds me of the Far East Suite in a lot of ways -- truly beautiful stuff. P.S. this one is available at EMusic...
  8. I totally agree with that, Danimal, but what incentive would "they" have to make a "worthy product" when most people are happy with 128k bps-encoded MP3's?
  9. Damn, Joe... you don't want to move to Whitehall... those motherfuckers are crazy up there... Seriously, sorry to hear about this.
  10. Who knew that so much great music could come out of that nondescript little building in the Manistee National Forest?
  11. I'm always glad to see this thread pop up again... gonna go put "Salty Swift" in the CD player right now!
  12. Al, they'll let you in if you tell them about your favorite record!
  13. I have that one from EMusic, and it is amazing. I really wanted to buy it (on sale) from Newbury, but since I had just purchased this one: The Vandermark 5 - Alchemia it's probably best to stop spending for awhile!
  14. I just ordered one -- $14.29 total, including shipping and sales tax. I don't have the Ellington/Coltrane CD yet, so what the heck!
  15. I really enjoy "In My Time"... more discussion here. I also have the Mosaic, and have never warmed to much beyond the first two discs. But, those first two are wonderful! Also, there are some great Wilson arrangements on the Carmell Jones Mosaic Select.
  16. Signify is back on EMusic, now as the two-CD "Special Edition". The special editions of "Coma Divine" and "Stupid Dream" are also there.
  17. 25. :rsmile: Look again. Huh? Did you buy two copies, Ron??
  18. I wonder if any of these chess babes also play trombone... now THAT would be HOT!!
  19. Holy crap, Agg, that's a good deal... if I ever saw that set for $50, it would be a no brainer.
  20. Me, too, on both counts.
  21. Anybody familiar with this one? Steve Lacy / Mal Waldron - Live in Berlin '84 (Jazzwerkstatt) Recorded live at Jazzbuhne, Berlin, June 15, 1984. Steve Lacy (soprano sax); Mal Waldron (piano) Improvisation Blinks A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing Snake Out Epistrophy
