  1. It scares the friggin' crap out of me that we are talking about the "pre-internet days"....seriously, both GregK and Captain Wrong... we are all talking about 10 years ago or less? I make my living by keeping up on "technology", but some (too many?) things are moving ridiculously fast!
  2. Bringing this one up again to ask (again) if the DVD is available separately. Jason, the DVD is wonderful... it really helped me understand the music better. It was very nice to see the communication on stage, and the Braxton commentary as well. Reminds me of the Braxton interview on the Leo/Coventry set -- both informative and inspirational, in a sense -- just hearing Braxton talk about his music helps me make sense of it, if that make sense! I have the Iridium set on MP3 from EMusic, and a gracious fellow board member loaned me the DVD. Although I struggle with purchasing the entire 9-CD set (as I already have the VBR MP3's), I'd buy the DVD immediately, if available. Plus, I gotta save my $ for the upcoming Mosaic!!!
  3. That may be "technically" correct, but I don't think think thread is "gender neutral" by any means -- it's a "boys club" thread, just like the old "Babe Thread". Aggie's got it right, as usual. (and for the record, I did make a few posts to the old "babe thread"... and although it's a totally weak argument, I'll submit that most, if not all, the posts I made were all of women over 30, whom I admire for many reasons in addition to their physical appearance.)
  4. That is remarkable, in many ways. I've been eyeballing a copy at my local bookstore, but they still want full retail+ for it... over $100, if I remember correctly. This copy has been on their shelves for at least two years now.
  5. I do BOTH... simultaneously! I'm a multitasking MF!
  6. :rsmile: Not me... I get _less_ work done when the board is down. It messes up my "flow"... :rsly:
  7. Thanks very much for the tip, Eric. I've been thinking about buying the Rounder box set, but (for the same reasons you mentioned) will probably just purchase the MP3s. Can you (or anybody else) please give me the details of "the Lomax book"? Is that the "Mister Jelly Roll" book? Was it included in the other Library of Congress recordings set?
  8. *UP* Geri Allen on right now. Tune in online for some fantastic solo piano.
  9. Damn! Me, too! I saw Organissimo last Saturday, Reptet last night. Both SMOKIN' shows! Those two bands TOGETHER? The Traverse City Fire Department might need some overtime hours tonight!
  10. Just came back from their gig in Grand Rapids. I saw them last year, and thought they were great. This year they were even better!
  11. Yes, I'm in shock... I can't believe you've put away all of your 80's hair metal vinyl long enough to listen to some _good_ music!! Seriously, this is a great record, and this thread has prompted me to put it on again this morning. I haven't listened to it in a quite awhile. Next up: Roscoe Mitchell and the Sound Ensemble - Snurdy McGurdy and her Dancin' Shoes. (this is another great one, Al... and there's a couple of really great Von Freeman records on the Nessa label that you don't want to miss, as well!)
  12. ...says the guy from Whitehall, MI (!)
  13. Good news! Anybody have any details on the "9 CD set due soon from Leo"?
  14. I have an almost 15-year old daughter. For her (and all her friends) cell phones are a "way of life". I can't say this study (and others) doesn't concern me. I share porcy's skepticism. I got rid of my (business) land line a few months back, and, as far as I'm concerned, the inverse-square law is my friend. I sometimes spend hours on the phone during the day, and the cell phone is on the other side of the room. Junk science or not, I hate talking on that damn thing, so I have a gadget that hooks it up to my "regular" phone. Cell phones may be "glorified radios", but no normal radio puts out anywhere near that much electromagnetic energy. Plus, I'd bet that most of us don't hold our radios up to the side of our heads for hours!
  15. Very nice photos, Tom! Fluid Motion with Sam Rivers I really enjoy this record, and return to it as often as the Blue Note titles. Interesting compositions, "group interplay", nice balance between "inside and outside" playing.
  16. Happy Easter! Since I'm a liberal, I won't be attending church today. But, I am planning on watching some Sunday morning talk shows!
  17. I've considered doing it alphabetically, but every time I start, I usually get distracted before I'm done with 'A'. Got to Louis Armstrong once, but that sent me off on a Jelly Roll Morton kick for awhile, and then I skipped back to early some early Ellington. It just occurred to me that I should consider organizing the music chronologically -- that might give me a fighting chance!
  18. CT = Cecil Taylor?
  19. Welcome to the board JETman! Yes, good news about the Willisau release -- I also missed out. I believe there are three 2-CD sets released by Leo -- Quartet (Coventry), Quartet (London), and Quartet (Birmingham). Lots of good information here.
  20. Nice article, thanks for posting. Curious that there's no mention of Keefe Jackson. There appears to be a lot of cross-pollination going on -- for instance, Frank Rosaly plays on both of Jackson's leader dates.
