It's not a done deal yet, and there's a posibility that the M's may include Morrow as part of the deal. If it goes through I think it makes the Phillies better, but not by a lot. If they had kept Lee and traded for Halliday that's great 1-2 punch. Sad to see Matsui go, he can still hit and he always was a class act all the way.

Dirty Harry sells mobile homes!!!

I don't see a stove, only a microwave- I guess they don't cook much.

I'm not enthused about this deal at all. I thought Coke was it, and Jackson never got a chance to show what he can do on the major league level. Grandrson is not very impressive as a player: Year Age Tm Lg G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB Pos Awards 2009 28 DET AL 160 710 631 91 157 23 8 30 71 20 6 72 141 .249 .327 .453 .780 100 286 1 2 3 2 4 *8 AS For a guy with some pop his slugging % is not all that good, his OBP is lousy. I guess we can hope he gets better...

Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge
PHILLYQ replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Well, I made my December gig in a roundabout way- I went to see 'Fela' on Saturday and caught lots of Afropop done by a terriffic band(Antibalas)- to my ears it's a gig, but I may squeeze something in later in the month to boot. 'Fela' is most highly recommended, spectacular dancing, costumes, great music, charismatic lead, etc. -
Speaking as a Yankee fan, I HATE it- that guy is a certified Yankee killer. Good pick up for the Bosox.

If the Yanks offer arbitration to them and they accept and there are no free agent offers accepted by the players, then the Yanks are bound to a one year contract at either at what the Yanks offer or what the player requests. In such a case the Yanks would almost surely have to pay Matsui or Damon much more than they want to pay. With Pettite he's either playing for the Yanks or not at all.

Beck on 'Superstition' with Stevie Wonder was 'wonderful'! His solo tore the roof off!!!

Maria Schneider is at Jazz Standard, Renee Rosnes is at the Vanguard.

Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge
PHILLYQ replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I made my November gig on a lucky Friday the 13th- I caught Tab Benoit at Sullivan Hall in NYC. Opening was Mike Zito, a passable singer and pretty good guitarist playing blues/rock/Cajun stuff. Tab Benoit was another story, he's not only a very good singer, he's a cracklin' guitarist mining the same general territory as Mike Zito but with better results. Tab Benoit had the packed club screaming and dancing and he delivered in spades. Great gig, and now if I make a December gig I'll have the entire year with a gig a month! http://www.tabbenoit.com/ -
Hiroshi Tanno is in Japan and he's at Early Records.

Never experienced pain like this

Glad to hear that you're feeling better Paps A side note- are they also checking out your blood sugar? I ask because diabetics and those on their way to it can have all sorts of circulation/blood problems. -
I thought it was Brian Bannister. Pretty good starter, might actually do well on a talented team. it is Brian, I'm wiped out from staying up late to watch the game last night.
-
I gave it a spin last night and I like it and I think I'll like it more as I play it more.

The White Sox traded for Mark Teahen, which may help them quite a bit. I'd also look to Mark Bannister to be dealt by the Royals.

I became a Yankee fan in '64, I was 8 years old and starting to get interested in baseball. In Brooklyn you picked a team and you were expected to stick with them for life. The Yankees were going to the WS in '64 and the Mets were a buch of losers, lovable and comical, but that didn't go far for an 8 year old. So the Yanks make the WS and lose to the Cards(Gibson, Ken Boyer, etc) and I was disappointed but hopeful for next year. Of course, after '64 they started a string of 9th place finishes in a 10 team league! I learned quite a bit about loyalty and sticking with it that became valuable as I got older. '76/'77 were wonderful for me, at 20 & 21 I was backing the champs, and '81 was quite disappointing, and then came a long slide with good offensive teams and no pitching and then total stinkdom(Stump Merrill, anyone?). The teams from '94 on have been great to enjoy, and this year has been especially great, if Matsui is done as a Yankee he went out in grand style and I LOOOOVE Sabathia, and the core four have one for the tail end of their careers. Tomorow is the parade, and when I get off the subway in lower Manhattan around 7:00 to go to NJ for work I'm sure they'll be lots of people already there to get a good spot for the parade. Sometimes baseball and the hoopla is a welcome diversion from life.

I agree, the Phillies are loaded, not sure if any big names will be leaving but they are the team to beat going into next year at least in the NL. A lot of people were saying that the Phillies didn't hit and that lost them the series but I think the Yankee pitching was better than what the Phillies had. If the Phillies keep Lee and get Hamels back to what he was in 2008 with that lineup they could be back in the WS next year.
-
I went to bed at midnight and I'm up at 4:30 but for now I FEEL GREAT!!!! Kudos for the Phils, they never quit and made it a very good WS. Parade tomorrow, if I could I'd take off work and go, shouild be lots of people for the parade.

Gots to be some golden flour there, then. Welcome to the board!

Anyone else going to the WFMU Record Fair tonight?
PHILLYQ replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
This may sound a bit strange but I went to the WFMU record fair and I don't buy vinyl and my turntable doesn't work! I had a free Saturday(wife out for the day), and whenever I can I go to the farmer's market in Union Square. I also had a coupon for $2 off the admission, so it cost me $5 to go there and it's about 7-8 blocks away from the farmer's market. It was a lot of fun, tons of vendors and a vinyl lover's scene for sure. I bought some CDs there and got some good deals, like the first five Mahavishnu discs in a box for $24, a Beau Jacque disc for $4, and on the way out I nabbed a Revolutionary Ensemble disc for $3. I think I saw two or three women there, possibly one without a boyfriend/husband, and mostly a lot of guys who looked like me- middle-aged white guys. It was almost like being in a larger version of Academy!!
