Not being a fan I've not been following this thread but I was shocked to hear the news. A great loss to the jazz world.

I was there, what a night, unforgetable. If my memory is correct that was part of a Jazz Goes to College series. I seem to recall seeing Horace Silver in the same series.

Over The Hill Very nice records - great little band.

I don't think it matters too much as long as you can get around. Douglas is a good starting point for trips around the island. When I was there. a lot of the accommodation was cheap and cheerful (built for the mass holiday trade early last century or earlier). I suspect a lot of the accommodation has moved up market since then but nevertheless make sure you choose something decent.

I love this one too. It would be great to see the Horo surface again. I can't understand why I didn't get it when it first came out.

It's a great city in any event.

It's a few years since I was there. My memories are all good. The scenery is beautiful and varied, mountains moorland, coastline. Narrow roads and interesting towns and villages, not really like the UK. Steam and electric railways too.

Lars Gullin comes to mind first.

I am not familiar with the second one. Thanks. Duet was recorded inTokyo in Tokyo for Paddlewheel in 1985. My copy is a German Bellaphon presssing.

Not sure if these two duo albums count as abscurities- Zebra with Jack Dejohnette Duet with Nobuyoshi Ino (bass and synth).

Tony's later drumming doesn't do much for me. I guess he was such an innovator that I expect more of the same. No one stands still though, I just wish I liked it more.

John - this one is great. I think you will like it ! Hmmmm.....I don't find the sound clips too compelling, are they representative ? I've always enjoyed the Jazz Crusaders and have the live cds and a couple of their studio cds (Uh Huh and Freedom Sound) so I decided to invest in the Mosaic set. They have some great tunes with lots of variety and good solos all round. Although I doubt you'd want to play the six cds right off - they do have a signature sound.

The second series hasn't reached the UK yet. Watched most of series one, I agree with Uncle Skid, much too repetetive. Would have made an interesting documentary if it were cut down to an hour or two. I'll probably give series two an audition though.

I saw the electric RTF. The stage was decked out in scientology banners! Any connection here with the pixie-ass tune tiltes?

I really enjoyed the first RTF at the time, especially after seeing them live. Like UBU I still like listening to it, it's got a special sort of charm. Didn't care too much for the second album. Hated the electric RTF.

One to dig out and play. An album in the collection overlooked for far too long. Reminders of these forgotten dates is one of the great things about this place

Which explains why one old vinyl shop I went in seemed to have dozens of the Barry Miles LPs, all at 50p to £1 ! That's one I don't have. The Slide Hampton surfaced on a Fresh Sound cd some time ago. Poor sound presumably taken from vinyl.

I've several of these. All UK pressings. They sold for 50p if I rememeber correctly, mostly they were marketed through newsagents and tobacconists rather than record shops. They are not on the best vinyl but pressing quality wasn't too bad. Some interesting if not essential stuff.
