  1. No, Pharoah plays burning tenor. I believe he plays on Part 3 (of 4) only, but he makes his presence very much known. My mistake Pete, what could I have been thinking of? He has a very short solo interlude towards the end of part 4. Anyway it's been good to spin this great music again.
  2. There is nothing wrong with the recorded sound, it's first rate. The problem is the drum tuning. There is no "snap" to the snare on some tracks and I don't find that attractive.
  3. Makes sense because of the different line ups I guess.
  4. My copy shows Moto Grosso Feio as April 3, 1970 and August 26, 1970 for Iska.
  5. All of the above plus Charles Tyler, Dennis Charles, Booker T.
  6. Not played this for a while but isn't Pharoah's contribution limited to a piccolo solo?
  7. That's right! We're taking our s@#t back to America! True Dmitry, but without us Europeans it wouldn't have been released.
  8. The drum sound is rather flabby in spots. My guess this is due to the soft tuning used by drummer Carl Burnett.
  9. Sad news indeed. His "To Swing Or Not To Swing" is one of the most joyful records I know. Thanks for all the pleasure Barney.

    John Carter

I'd definitely recommend all the "Roots and Folklore" series on Gramavision- "Castles of Ghana", Dance of the Love Ghosts", "Fields" and "Shadows on the Wall". The first in the series "Dauwhe" on Black Saint is less satisfactory when compared to the later recordings imo. A nice tribute album to Carter is David Murray's "Death of a Sideman" which features Bobby Bradford who also composed the suite.
  11. Krispy Kremes must be better than the average soft, soggy British donut.
  12. The Bronx Horns have had very favourable review in Cadence-but then most recordings do. Not heard the discs myself though.
  13. Sorry, but I have to pass on the vote. I can't choose between Ju Ju; Night Dreamer and Speak No Evil. Wayne's Blue Note output must be among the best body of work from any musician. Well that's my opinion.
  14. Mine went to the Bay area.
  15. My experience was that 80s cds actually came with the holes.
  16. Hope so but no mention of this on the Mosaic site.
  17. Sorry Dmitry but I didn't find it that special. I didn't find it essential and sold it. One very nice track, the rest not so good. If I recall the recording isn't that good. I didn't get it that long ago and it might still be available through the UK distributor.
  18. In his book "Stopping Time" Bley says that he sold all the tapes from the Hillcrest club for re-use. If I remember correctly he wanted to finance his trip east.
  19. My view entirely, Late. I've been looking for "Jazz Concert Grosso" for just about ever. I do have the Fresh Sound " vinyl of the other ABC album so I'm halfway there.
  20. It was his strong solos on some Gillespie big band sides (from 1953?) that first alerted me to Legge. A nice pianist.
  21. Keep me posted, I'm heading for Denver in June.
  22. Another day of heavy rain. It's supposed to be spring.
  23. Happy birthday and many more. Have a great day.
  24. I've got the Savoy 2 lp set. Not played for a while but it has a permanent place in my collection. Take a chance, with that line up it has to pretty decent..
