  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. I agree, but to an extent. It is my preference when a player avoids childish, choreographed celebrations in favor of acting like he's done it before--but that's just me. I also prefer it when players respect their opponent and respect the game--but that's just me. Some fans love what Moss and Owens and others do in celebration of a TD. Defensive players have long memories, they're regular pachyderms. Remember when Michael Irvin got laid out unconscious? Those are the kind of hits that get a little extra emphasis for the big mouth end zone celebrators. At the same time there were fans who cheered as Michael Irvin needed medical attention on the field--I wouldn't count myself among them, I don't want to see any player (no matter how obnoxious) get hurt.
  3. The cover art for the series is without question hideous, but is in stark contrast to the high quality of the music. I've also got the Willis Jackson, iirc.
  4. Thanks Soul Stream! I've got Two Headed Freap and the live Holmes/McGriff, only 23 to go!
  5. Soul Stream, how bout an obscure 25 every greaze fan needs to hunt down? In the Legends Of Acid Jazz series, I have Sonny Stitt, Charles Kynard, Leon Spencer, Johnny Hammond Smith, Gene Ammons, Don Patterson, Melvin Sparks, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Houston Person, Booker Ervin, Trudy Pitts, Shirley Scott...I went nuts on emusic when I realized they were all there for the taking, I may have more of them that I can't think of. They all have their moments of sublimely greaaaazzzeey funk, particularly the Stitt and the Johnny Hammond Smith. I've got a Jimmy McGriff Blue Note best of, and an import of his stuff on Groove Merchant that have some gems. Recently I added two live recordings of McGriff with Richard Groove Holmes, both pretty cool.
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. Cilantro, lots of onions, radish, salsa, green chili sauce, rice, beans, carne asada or pork or chicken, corn tortillas, maybe some avocado...that's what eating is all about. Easily one of my favorite things to eat. The cilantro is crucial.
  8. Hear, hear. Thanks again Milan!
  9. Some great advice I received is to read the liner notes of the albums you do have and become familiar with the names playing the other instruments alongside Charlie Parker or John Coltrane or whoever, decide which sidemen have a sound you like, then follow those sidemen to other albums. There's so many that are/were great it is amazing, you're in for quite a bit of discovery. Also, www.allaboutjazz.com has links to a great primer for collecting jazz. Also check out www.allmusicguide.com.
  10. At least I didn't guess Joe Sample for number 12!
  11. Thanks for all the BFTs Big Al! Better late than never with responses, I hope! 1. A fun 44 seconds. Looney Toons? 2. Hamp? Milt? 3. Laid back, smooth the positive way smooth was intended as an adjective for jazz. No guess. 4. Reminds me of McShann or Basie tracks I have on a compilation in terms of era, but I can't identify anyone and wouldn't guess either of those names here. Love the hand claps. 5. At the outset Gene Harris or Junior Mance or even Les McCann were popping up in my head, and by the middle I was totally lost. Cool! 6. Earl Hines? 7. Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young, with Diz or Fats Navarro--those are the names I'm starting to associate with this sound--but I couldn't make a sure call at this point. 8. Almost too happy for my tastes...yo no se. 9. Horace Silver - Pursuit Of The 27th Man 10. Coltrane? 11. Yusef? 12. Jobim? 13. JB 14. Howard Roberts? 15. Brother Jack McDuff - Down Home Style 16. Grant Green? I'm pretty sure I have this but I just can't spot it. 17. Is this from the Moncur Select? This is on something I just got, I love the melody and recognize it immediately. Damn, I'm stuck. Now, on to read the responses! Thanks again Big Al!
  12. I wonder if we're any relation, I'm a Shaw.
  13. I tend to avoid those Retrospective things. With Blue Note reissues so abundant, I'd rather have the whole albums.
  14. Cymande - Cymande up next: The Gil Evans Orchestra - Out Of The Cool

    Grant and Wes

Wes Montgomery and Grant Green cds were among my first 10 jazz purchases in about 1992. I bought a best of Wes on Verve for "Bumpin' On Sunset" and Grant's Alive for "Down Here On The Ground."
  16. Another belated birthday greeting, doc.

    Herbie Hancock

Hey Frank, Many of Herbie's Blue Notes are electric piano free, and I've yet to hear a bad album. Empyrean Isles, Inventions & Dimensions, My Point Of View, and The Prisoner are all excellent.
  18. Happy Birthday!
  19. Happy Birthday Marty!
  20. Happy Birthday!
  21. I echo all of the above shock and sadness, and offer my sincerest condolences to Ken's family.
  22. Cripes, they're crawlin' out of the woodwork!
