  1. Sorry to be so late to the discussion, I had an incredibly busy week and a half both at work and at home. I had a chance deal go through over the weekend & swapped my Durango for a Honda Element but that's another story... Thanks again Dmitry, really cool BFT. 1. I could not identify the flute player, but I thought this track was an excellent start. 2. I dig this a lot, the mood reminds me of some dark and grimy Pat Martino tracks. I don't think it is Pat on the guitar, though. 3. Love that piano, another good track. Somewhere between Getz and Gato Barbieri. 4. An infectious building groove. The attack of the horn player is frantic, but makes sense. Ornette? A great mood, I can really feel this. 5. NMCOT 6. Reflective, very somber intro...when the vibes kick in I know I'm in for something good. Heavy track, among several I'd buy on this BFT. Gary Burton? 7. Miles Davis? 8. Miles Davis? 9. All right! More vibes. Bring on the percussion. Hell yeah. Cal Tjader? 10. This is pretty cool, nice choice to close it. I don't know who it is.
  2. What turntable should I purchase that would work best with one of the above burners? Or is there a turntable I can hook up to my Mac?
  3. Happy Birthday!
  4. To many more!
  5. Someone had it for a signature for a while. Deep statement, must be attributable to a very wise philosopher.
  6. I believe the complete text is, "If you no like tis album, your a stupid donkey ass moron who no like jazz."

    Joe Pass

I dig the Virtuoso albums and a duo album with JJ Johnson "We'll Be Together Again." I'll buy more at some point. I haven't bought any Mosaics since my first two, I may get the Pass when I do.
  8. I echo all of the above sentiments with good thoughts and hopes for the best for you and Alison, Jim.
  9. My good friend works for them and was allowed to bring one guest. Fun experience, they set up rows of banquet tables topped with cartons of random cds--I was betting they were discs that sat on a shelf for too long, since some were labelled with Tower Records price tags.
  10. These are the kind of discussions that leave me scratching my noggin. I've heard loads of great Miles Davis where I couldn't tell you where he flubbed a note, every noise he made sounds intentional and well played to me since I don't know shit about manipulating a horn. I've also got some killer Al Hirt tracks. Serious!
  11. Imagine suffering from this syndrome and going to a sale where new cds are $3. This was my experience Saturday morning at a Camarillo warehouse owned by EMI. The selection could have been better, but who's complaining? Keeping these: Louis Jordan - One Man Named Louis The Amazing Bud Powell Volume 2 (non-RVG) Pat Martino - Live At Yoshi's Dr. John - Duke Elegant Jason Moran - Facing Left Charlie Hunter - Charlie Hunter Cachao - Cuba Linda Gladys Knight & The Pips - Claudine Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Bobby Womack - Facts Of Life D'Angelo - Voodoo Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions 2 Slum Village discs Eazy-E - EZ Duz It These will be sold: Blues King Pins Series (Capitol) - Elmore James (doubled up, have another comp w/same tracks) Blues King Pins Series (Capitol) - Lightnin' Hopkins (same as above) Blues King Pins Series (Capitol) - Ike Turner (yawn) Still deciding: Les Nubians - One Step Forward
  12. Yeah, same with the Raiders.
  13. Return To The 36 Chambers is a classic in my book, some of RZA's best beats and ODB's lyrics are insane--I remember my friends and I saying, "It's like they put a drunk bum on the microphone." Hilarious! He was the 90s Flava Flav, I agree--but I think ODB had more skills. Not recommended for anyone who wants to be "introduced" to rap, to say the least.
  14. Damn, I love Ol' Dirty Bastard. RIP.
  15. The Beasties also play instruments.
  16. It isn't exactly the same thing Mark, but like Jim is saying, when it is a big gumbo of samples like the Beasties used the final product is far different from the original. Here's a challenge, anyone who thinks sampling is crap can pm me their address and I'll mail them a cdr of well-crafted musical collages. Some of Bjork's music is made with samples.
  17. Cannonball Addict, the Beastie Boys are so much different from Dead Prez I don't even know where to start.
  18. The Lakers have some talent I'm excited about watching, outside of Kobe who always does something ridiculous every game. Odom, Caron Butler, Tierre Brown, the skinny rookie Sasha, Jumaine Jones...they've got some atheletes. Once they get Vlade back, they'll round out to that 8th seed first round exit I talked about earlier.
  19. So Chuck, the law speaks correctly for music in this case?
  20. The NBA has gone into some wild Twilight Zone dimension, where Kobe Bryant hates winning and hard-worker Ron Artest thinks he's Kool Mo Dee.
  21. There are a select few current R&B artists carrying the torch, so to speak. Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, and Bilal are a few other favorites of mine. What are your opinions of those three, Jim?
  22. Yeah, that's some funny shit. I'm not a big Eminem fan, but that track had me rolling.
  23. I listen to both.
  24. James Newton was targeting a different audience than the Beastie Boys. James Newton didn't know how to loop his music into a hot hip hop beat, the Beastie Boys did. Also, by being sampled by the Beastie Boys freaks like me might try to track down James Newton's record to hear the whole song. By charging for sampling the music industry has stifled rap's creativity. The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique is considered one of the greatest rap records ever simply because of the sheer volume of samples on it. That album could never happen today. James Newton fans could care less about the Beastie Boys, and many Beastie Boys fans probably wouldn't know who James Newton is without the Beasties having sampled him. I know I wouldn't.
  25. Happy Birthday MKE! Happy Birthday Randy Hersom and Nathaniel Catchpole, too!
