  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. Every Jimmy Smith album I own has been listed as a Top 5 candidate.
  3. The Clippers have a better team than the Lakers--even with Kobe, who didn't play last night. The Clippers have superior point guards, better post players, and a deeper bench. Got the Kings at the Spurs on right now. Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili play the game the way it is meant to be played.
  4. LeBron is the most exciting player alive. I hope his ankle isn't hurt bad. According to ESPN last night the MVP is a toss up between LeBron and Nash, but I'd give it to Shaq or Duncan myself. The Baby Bulls are growing up! The solid play of Hinrich sets the pace.
  5. I'm not giving the Eagles much of a chance here, though I'll be pulling for them against the Pats. I think the Steelers were a better team than the injury-riddled Eagles are at this point.
  6. When I was an elementary school student my friend and I used to draw multi-tiered, multiple room, completely diabolical torture chambers with conveyer belts to roll the victims through. But we never named names, we just thought the details of the torture process were extremely funny to expand on for some reason. We didn't actually want to torture or kill anybody. Tough to say from here whether these two kids were serious. The authorities will have to make the call. After Columbine, everybody's a bit paranoid.
  7. I'm listening to Of Love And Peace right now. This usually isn't my thing, but I kind of dig this one. "Cristo Redentor" was on the first jazz compilation I ever bought, and remains a favorite. I'm not against the use of voices, and I like them here.
  8. I would divide his recording activities into five periods: Fantasy (1946 - 1961, including some sideman dates and two sessions as a leader for Savoy 1953/54) Verve (1961 - 1967) Skye (1968 - 1969) Fantasy & Galaxy (1970 - 1978) Concord (1979 - 1982) I like the first Fantasy period best, although there are very good items in every period. And you're right, there were stylistic differences between them making comparisons somewhat obsolete. Who would compare Getz' bossa nova records to his early quintets with Jimmy Raney? What would you say are the choice Tjader records from each period, and why?
  9. When I listened to it the first time, I didn't hear anything that made me rush back to listen again...I'll have to pay attention to Gale and see if I get the same impression. Man, I love most all of my Blue Notes, and I'm having trouble thinking of a bad one that isn't from the 70s.
  10. I'm a fan of Several Shades Of Jade and Soul Sauce. I only own a few compilations, I'll be seeking whole albums at some point.
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. pm sent! BTW, I haven't used the internet to look up any of my responses to any of the BFTs. This almost helps to excuse the ineptitude and error-laden nature of my responses, but not really.
  13. That's exactly the reason why he did this track! Some info here. Thanks for the link, Mike.
  14. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care if it was or wasn't a fumble. It was balanced the karma for that atrocious "roughing the passer" back in '76. And remember, the league reviewed that "tuck rule" fumble in the offseason of that year, said it was called correctly and even refused to modify the rule. It's still in place. Later, Kevin I can dig the '76 reference, but to actually argue that that was not a fumble is downright Bushian.
  15. I may never forgive the Pats. Seriously, it should be a great game. May the best team win! It's unnatural to have football enemies outside your own division, Noj. If I were you guys, I'd focus on the Chiefs and Chargers and Broncks. Oh, I hate those three teams too, Paul. I hate every team that isn't the Raiders or the Rams. In fact, I'd be pleased if somehow the Pats and Steelers would both lose.
  16. I may never forgive the Pats. Seriously, it should be a great game. May the best team win!
  17. What time do you usually step outside to walk the dog? Half-time? I don't have a dog, but we can take this outside. You cheaters deserve to lose. It was a FUMBLE and you know it!
  18. Go Steelers. Signed, Resident Patriot Hater
  19. I have really nice crates for my records, thick black plastic with built in handles. Someone was throwing them away and asked me to toss them in a dumpster, so instead I tossed them in my truck.
  20. Yes, but would you believe the street's former title was...
  21. "The Bump" is cool to me. Oddly enough, I have "The Bump Part Two" on a cd compilation that isn't on the LP
  22. BFT#22 Compiled by Danasgoodstuff Thanks for the fine compilation, Dana! 1. Horace Silver? I'm positive I own this, but I can't place it. Just plain good. Not a moment of music I don't enjoy. 2. "Moanin'", and a nice cover. Charles Earland? I may have this. 3. Ladies and gentlemen, there are 7 acknowledged wonders of the world, you are about to witness the 8th. Standing in the spotlight on showcase are 12 young men who've given you such tunes as "The Grunt," "Pass The Peas," "Gimme Some More." Without no doubt, these are the... 4. Whoa, I'm really lost here. Can't make a good guess. Very peculiar combination of instruments--what is that, sax, trombone, and some sort of weird organ or a guitar with an attachment...? 5. Unchartered territory, I haven't the foggiest clue. I'm picturing Pee Wee's Big Adventure. 6. Gato Barbieri? 7. Again Gato comes to mind. 8. Dissonant but somehow endearing in a Monk/Andrew Hill/Larry Young way... 9. Bluesy, soulful. Ben Webster? 10. This one draws a very emotional response from me, possibly my favorite track on the disc. Larry Coryell? I'll want this album, whatever it is. 11. Powerful during the spoken word segment, but I'm afraid I have very little working knowledge of what happened in East Timor. 12. Rock/blues. No guess 13. Sounds like Les McCann to me. Weird "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" quotes...slightly corny but still funky. 14. More rockin' blues. Mean harmonica player. No names coming to mind for the guitar player, but he's ripping it up here. I like this one better than 12. 15. Oh man! I know this one. I HAVE this. Jimmy Smith comes to mind. 16. "Willow Weep For Me." I don't recognize the pianist, though I hear something unique in the touch--I'll be interested to hear who this is. 17. "Oh Beautiful" - hmmm, who would do something patriotic like this? No idea. 18. No guess, though I recognize the tune from somewhere. 19. Bela Fleck? Marvelous ability, whoever it is. Dig the Hendrix quotes from "Highway Chile" and "Wind Cries Mary." 20. The Lettermen? 21. NMCOT

    Larry Young

That's accurate. I bought them both with excited anticipation to hear more Larry Young. When I played them I kept hoping there would be at least be one listenable track, but...
  24. The new AMG doesn't work with my old software on my Mac, so I never use AMG at home. I used to be on it every day, now I rarely ever visit the site. I went through all that crap to register and get a password too.
