  1. that's all I know as well -- would love to learn more. Shoulda asked Nels the last time I saw him.
  2. The Large Ensemble set above is quite interesting indeed, gotta dig it out of the racks again sometime.
  3. Re-upping this thread as it seemed like as good a place as any to ask: Do any of you have a scan of the Byard Lancaster interview in Cadence from March 1980? Would like to read it and I don't have a copy. This is for a research project and you'll certainly be thanked!
  4. too bad they couldn't have lightened it up somewhat.
  5. Just got the CD of Palo Alto. Good performance but jeez, my system is very light on the bass and this thing BOOMS -- almost too much, I'd say.
  6. whoa. yours?
  7. PoD isn't my favorite Hill by a long shot but it's the first one I heard -- it wasn't easy to find his albums in Kansas in the '90s, and that record impressed me. Hell, it's still impressive even if I reach for others instead. May have mentioned this elsewhere but the only time I saw him was at the Jazz Showcase leading a quartet with Greg Tardy, John Hébert, and Nasheet Waits. Really heavy gig!
  8. same. I definitely want a copy when it comes out.
  9. well... there was a late 70s Japanese pressing, which would have been available as an import at the time.
  10. I've definitely seen him but am struggling to remember who else was in the group! It was certainly good, whatever it was... his NineWinds LPs are all quite choice, have most of them in the racks. More recent albums I am less familiar with though I have a few. oh wait, it was in August 2012 at Ibeam, duo with Filiano. Right after I moved east.
  11. This one is over ten years old now, but it's great (CD is oop): https://ugexploderecords.bandcamp.com/album/gro-es-messer
  12. I'm moving into an actual house at the end of the year and will probably need to start pricing out a second stereo, so maybe there are some good recommendations in here that won't totally break the bank.
  13. for me as long as it gets the job done I'm happy. now, record collection envy... that's another matter.
  14. Ah damn, RIP. One of a kind.
  15. yeah, orchestral version IIRC, but yeah.
  16. cool! One of my favorites, though I've never had a Saturn copy.
  17. Good one -- have the original silkscreen private press that Hino did for his "Love" imprint.
  18. Sad news! Legendary spot, never been to Copenhagen but...
  19. It is an iconic album in the Blue Note catalog, and the title track is very listenable.
  20. (IMO) excellent session. Ken returned to his native Jamaica and is now a missionary. Sweet man.
  21. crazy. The LP is usually $5-$10. It's a good one.
  22. yeah, I got a decent $2 Liberty USA copy maybe 20-25 years ago; decided to purge it a while back and was surprised to get like $40 for it. Good record but I did not feel the need to keep one in the racks. Maybe I'll grab a Japanese at some point.
  23. I know a fair amount of musicians that fall into the same camp; most are around Van's age. I tend to disagree with their conspiratorial mindsets but value my connection with them as people and artists.
