  1. Black Saint and Soul Note were apparently reliable when it was Giovanni's operation; now that the business has passed on to his kids, they aren't abiding by original contracts. This is what I have been told by musicians & musicians' next of kin.
  2. I was confused and thought that FvH and EP were playing duos. That would be super cool. Oh well - will be happy to catch them in an ensemble at the stone.
  3. I hope CAM starts paying people.
  4. Whoa. I saw FvH twice in NY in Fall 2012, so he was here. Both times were with Grassi.
  5. Lorca is great. I think it is better than Starsailor though many "heads" might disagree. Can't say that I really care much for the pre-Happy/Sad material - it's fine, just not distinctive - and later Buckley doesn't do it for me either. Would be curious to see the film.
  6. Only heard from Ras Moshe on Facebook - nothing substantiated. I agree, I felt like similar news had surfaced some time ago and who knows whether it was accurate. I remember in the late 1990s some questions were floating around whether he was alive or not. Tried a few years ago to get in touch with Raheem about his father, but never got any response via email.
  7. Very Urgent is a fine first "official" foray into the Eurojazz (and wider) consciousness but it's not the Brotherhood of Breath. It's a lot starker (rugged small-group distilling its influences). It's freer than the ZA recordings of the Blue Notes, Gwigwi Mrwebi, et al, but not as unfettered as the 1970s edition of the Blue Notes that recorded for Ogun. Up To Earth is an excellent, ragged affair that has more in line with later/BoB work. I recommend both.
  8. Alas, I feel a compulsion to keep mine. Excellent album. Good luck!
  9. The Alan Shorter is a killer avant-garde jazz record.
  10. yeah, me neither. They are all pretty lame. But the music is often sublime.
  11. Yeah, all of these records are excellent. It doesn't seem like they get talked about much among the BN hounds.
  12. yeah, I'd buy the Haden/Hall.
  13. *just* when i thought you were a moldy fig. what an image shattering.... I bought at least two avant-garde jazz LPs from John at one point.
  14. What?! Where???
  15. Yes, you're right - that should have thrown up several red flags.
  16. Yeah, agreed. It's horrible.
  17. Shoot -- just the other day I accidentally hit some combination of keys and the whole computer shut down. Wasn't too happy about that. yeah, I do the same thing except that words come out and get sent to editors. It's weird.
  18. if only I'd been into jazz in the 1980s (and had an allowance that could afford albums) !
  19. Horrible. Thankfully they're throwing the book at him but whether it can be repaid is anybody's guess.
  20. yeah, you sold me your List so I could upgrade from my ratty copy. Sounds fine!
  21. I have the Polydor as well. Probably my favorite SME session and I have quite a few of them. Looking forward to these.
  22. Whoa - not expected, at least from this corner. Sad news. He's such a wonderful player. RIP.
  23. At one point, in the late 80s maybe, Horo had a closeout sale on remaining stock. If I recall correctly, Jeff bought a bunch that way - lucky him as they were cheap back then.
  24. Rhys Chatham - Die Donnergötter - (Homestead)
  25. I don't think he really put it that way. I listened to the 31 minute interview twice. It's clear that the problems he saw with it go further than ignorance.
