  1. If Anthony invites you to Red Lobster, that means he likes you!
  2. Interviewed Juma Sultan and Bettina Richards in the course of one week. Music is really funny sometimes.

  3. Who in the NY area wants an 8 x 10 foot (approx.) beautiful, machine made Oriental rug? Free to a good home, very clean and in excellent shape. Dark blue, red, orange and tan pattern - Morton Feldman would be pleased. I just don't have room for it so if you want it, come by and pick it up!

  4. If it was the late 60s, they would have been private "BRO" issues, which FMP reissued on LP in 1972. Pretty cool nonetheless! I'm getting that musician run-in thing going on in NYC. Fond memories of that about a dozen years ago when I ran into Leroy Jenkins on the street in the VIllage and had a nice stroll and conversation with him.
  5. Looks like The Bastards have some of the older releases in stock that had been hard to find - specifically a couple of the Garricks that I slept on.
  6. Shooting the breeze with Daniel Carter in line at Trader Joe's...

  7. FD reissued the Birth/Natural Jazz private issue, which was and is Hampel's label.
  8. Ooh, I haven't heard the '68 concert w/ Sharrock & McLaughlin. There's one I'm looking for with McLaughlin and Han Bennink, too, but I don't think it's the same material. 8th of July is a classic, and I'm also very fond of the Wergo and ESP LPs. Hampel's a fascinating character.
  9. Bottle of Racer 5 and James Ilgenfritz' wonderful new disc of Anthony Braxton compositions arranged for solo bass. And great solo music from Thollem McDonas earlier this eve. Great night.

  10. What ubu said.
  11. If you want to show your support for Lance Armstrong, email the USADA at athleteexpress@usada.org. Here's my letter (I even quoted Bill Dixon): To Whom it May Concern: I am writing to voice my support for Lance Armstrong in defense of the charges levied against him - that he has consistently doped since 1998 and defrauded the sport and his sponsors. I understand that there is a paucity of physical evidence, and that the trial has relied on hearsay from his former colleagues (including one w...

  12. Yeah, I would think the world court of anti-doping would trump American interests, no?
  13. Survived my first NY bike ride, in Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy) at night. Seemed disarmingly simple.

  14. I have word that the excellent drummer Tom Bruno has passed. A leading light of criminally underground music in the 1980s and '90s, he worked often with Ellen Christi as well as the trio/quartet TEST (w/ Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Matt Heyner) and played with Cecil Taylor. TEST performed literally underground as part of Music under the Streets in the NY subways. He'll be missed.
  15. I am hopeful that the news of the passing of reedman Byard "The Thunderbird" Lancaster and drummer Tom Bruno is untrue. This celestial orchestra is getting too big to deal with.

  16. According to Nate Chinen on twitter, the fascinating and very original reedman Byard Lancaster has passed. He had just turned 70. More news when it becomes available. To me he'll always be one of the "young ones" of the post-Coltrane avant-garde, even though he's my dad's age.
  17. Don't forget the Amiga LP! I thought there was a Dutch Fontana version using the Limelight cover (in a single sleeve), but I can't find that online right now.
  18. The LinkedIn - it is hard to understand.

  19. Guess that would be quite a switch...
  20. I like this date quite a bit - it's grown on me over time. Nice and tight. This strikes me as kind of ridiculous and presumptive re: other musicians, as far as quotes go...
  21. Here's a short piece I wrote on Marzette for the NYC Jazz Record: Watts also appeared on unissued recordings from Clifford Thornton and the Jazz Composers' Orchestra and The Orchestra of the University of the Streets (under the direction of Bill Dixon). Both "Lonely Woman" and "octobersong" are on the Savoy LP, which is excellent.
  22. It is decent. Saw them last week and it was pretty engaging/entertaining.
  23. I believe the one you're referring to is "Inversions" on Muworks Records. It's from 1992, and is worth the search. Sadly, it's out of print, but should be relatively easy to find. Good to know; of course, the Boxholder is long OOP by now as well.
  24. Good 'un. Now spinning: Ossiach Live - third LP of the set, with George Gruntz conducting his Mahgreb Suite, featuring the Surman Trio. (BASF LP)
