  1. Huh? I will always maintain that doping does NOT make one go from mediocre shlub to star athlete. It may give an "edge" but the training, strategy, and physiology that make a star athlete are still there in spades. Most people do not understand that, and think that the drugs "make one better." In most cases, they artificially ease recovery or perhaps sharpen one's reflexes for a short amount of time. That's the extent of systematic performance enhancement. As a former amateur cat 3 roadie, using drugs wasn't going to make me a Tour winner. Dig?
  2. I'm sure even a VG+ copy of Byrd in Paris would bring you a few hundred Euro at auction. Nice score. The only LPs I would pay a "lot" for are the Moloudji Tusques records, the Michael Cosmic, and the Hum Dono. I've always been outbid.
  3. Well, it was clear after the 2010 Tour that this would be the only logical next step. I'm sure he'll continue to race mountain bikes, marathons, and single-day events. Can't imagine the competitive bug being completely quashed. And I sincerely believe that yes, he is indeed one of the greatest athletes of our time. Asshole, yes; doper, probably; but that doesn't negate his awesome achievements in sport.
  4. 2K for a hammered copy of Trombone By Three?
  5. I was talking to Alvin Fielder once and mentioned "the young drummer Mike Reed." Alvin's response was something like "he's in his thirties at least, so he's an old guy now!" and proceeded to ask whether there were any real young (under 23) drummers making a splash, and I actually couldn't think of any. Yes, Mike is in his mid-30s, but of very worthwhile drummers I know and get to hear a good deal, Marc Riordan (also an excellent pianist) is 29, and Dylan Ryan is 27. Other notable youngish players I'm aware of are altoist Nick Mazzarella (27), trumpeter Jaimie Branch (27) and Brooklyn-based trumpeter Jacob Wick (26). Indeed on some of these names. I always think of 20s-30s as "young" but to some I guess it isn't.
  6. Yes indeed. And thankfully for us, he didn't go through with castration - Denardo is an enjoyable percussionist and I'm glad he's around!

  8. Yeah, I remember seeing that video many years ago. Interesting stuff for a forming appreciation of different music. Ornette also talked about his sexual "problems" in other interviews in the 60s - definitely in the Notes & Tones interview, for example - though I never really understood what he was trying to get at. Oblique references to "forced homosexuality," etc., very strange.
  9. Wow. I'd be curious to hear this.
  10. If I didn't already have the BAG record and the Ware CD I'd jump on these. Hopefully they'll issue some material I can justify shelling out for. I'll be curious to hear the reports.
  11. Whoa. I didn't really follow his career, but still this is a serious loss. RIP.
  12. Man, I would love to see this - too bad I'm halfway across the country.
  13. The question is, are they clean copies?
  14. A lighthearted response.
  15. Yes, those are also awesome records. Still would like to check out the Running Man stuff too.
  16. There's more context to this but the O board is not the place for it.
  17. I have a BN blue-white Liberty of this, but it's quite fine with me. An astounding record, as with almost everything Mr. Moncur has waxed.
  18. Turn Circle? Straighter, but good. Originally on CBS.
  19. Yep, that's got everything you need. Except that the tune titled "Stained Angel Morning" is actually called "These That I Am." The labels were switched on the German edition of the LP, which is probably what Licht and O'Rourke had for reference. I love Ray Russell.
  20. ...who is also doped, and on down the line. I still maintain that this witch hunting is silly and a waste of time. I'm more irritated at Contador for not holding up when Schleck dropped his chain than I am for his clen-sing.
  21. Understandable though... I always say if I have a kid to send to college, the records go.
  22. I seem to remember it being done by Scorpio, which pretty much guarantees its questionable legitimacy. They did all those Saturn boots a few years back. If I had the kind of cash lying around for an original, well, it'd be a different story.
  23. nice score. I still for whatever reason have yet to hear the date w/ Brownie.
