  1. I am hoping to catch a flight into NYC to be a part of this. Please spread the word and I hope that some of you can attend.
  2. Customers who bought this also bought Darkthrone. Shawn???
  3. Also saxophonist Frank Wright (1935). Belated happy birthday to this one of a kind musician.
  4. Clement Greenberg, the art critic and writer, has an interesting essay on Jewishness and self-criticism, which he believes enters into the ideal of high achievement in arts, sciences and letters for Jewish men.
  5. Jon Eardley - From Hollywood to New York - (OJC) Compilation of Prestige/NJ ten-inches; Eardley's tone cuts like a knife.
  6. Time for a miracle.
  7. Steel is real, Cervelo be damned.
  8. Ronnie Mathews - Doin' the Thang - (Prestige, silver/black label) Found in a shop yesterday for $10, and was unfamiliar with it. Really nice session.
  9. That's trollish... Looking forward to your next Paris-Brest-Paris, P.L.M.
  10. You're right - this has been a very exciting tour and I've been following, as best I can, from the US. Cadel Evans has long been a favorite of mine (even in his mountain biking days) and it was sad to see him blow up and wreck his elbow. Although he wasn't a match for Contador and Schleck, it would have been nice to see him hold onto the yellow for a few more stages.
  11. I wasn't all that into his more recent ECMs; haven't heard the stuff he's put out on his label yet. As for avant-garde cred, don't forget that he was also in the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and worked/recorded with Lol Coxhill. As to the issue of middle-of-the-road, it's pretty endemic in a music where polemics aren't really an issue any more. I find a fair amount of contemporary, vaguely inside/outside stuff to be very milquetoast, as well as some of the "free" music.
  12. Maybe this will make you feel better.
  13. I really like that one a lot. Got a NJ mono of it for $5 maybe about a decade ago.
  14. Got that for something like $5-$7 from one of our board members.
  15. Here's a fine tribute from the younger set.
  16. Ah, what a day. RIP.
  17. If it's anything like the MMFs, you just have to switch the belt to the 45 setting.
  18. I set up this gig for NYC guitarist Amanda Monaco here in Austin at Space 12 (3121 E. 12th St.) for July 24. I hope some of you can attend.
  19. Yeah pretty real, considering how freaked Dave got when Harvey went political. What a neat guy; I wish I could have met him.
  20. From American Splendor and other comics to his jazz criticism and liner notes, I've long appreciated Mr. Pekar's work. It's too bad that he's left us, but there's a treasure trove to be uncovered in those file folders. Story here.
  21. A fine one - should dig it out myself.
  22. I can give you a general opinion on Music Hall turntables; I have an MMF-5 purchased in 2003 that I'm not all that happy with. I've had to reinstall / fool with the wiring to get it to ground properly, and have had belt problems. I don't think it's nearly as nice as the Regas that some folks I know have, so when the Music Hall craps out I'll definitely go with another brand.
  23. I'll get it for you - PM me.
  24. Did I miss this one? Me too  An understandable, but only-partially (if mostly) accurate perception. However, I think it sounds more like somebody who smoked too much dope and got too complacent about life in general. Musically & socially, Sir Paul seems to be missing a pair. Ringo is fine; I prefer Charlie Watts but they're both good drummers. I get more out of the Stones' music, but that's just me. [There's ol' Clifford, pissing in everybody's punch bowls again...]
