  1. Welcome and do stick around. It looks like you might have stepped into a firepit, but fear not!
  2. I'll start cleaning out my garage this afternoon. We'll see about the job. I'll be along as Allen's Personal Assistant.
  3. Pullen, Hopkins and Battle - hard to go wrong riding that kind of carpet.
  4. Somebody said that about Ornette too, am I right? Of course, they were missing Ornette's point entirely...
  5. Well, Hodges' nickname WAS "Rabbit"... though the cover is bizarre. Not all Futura covers are THAT stupid. I have it on a Musica issue with an abstract rendering of saxophone keys. It was NM at $20.
  6. I think the pre-Wynton jazz hype machine, as I understand it, seemed a little more sensible for figures like Braxton or Blythe (who ended up on larger labels). Just my own opinion. I guess what I refer to has a little more traction the way Tom puts it.
  7. I'd like to see the documentary, even if I find Sunny's playing of recent years a little less engaging. But then again, when you've gone as far as you can with one thing...
  8. And this isn't the only one!
  9. Stanley Clarke is on Stanley Cowell's Illusion Suite, which is a fine early ECM title.
  10. Having never seen him play (he was making records before I was born), I can only vouch for experiencing things like "Morning Prayer" and "Chico," which are strong discs, nothing more and nothing less. It seems like the hype machine was behind him in a way that he couldn't quite match.
  11. I have a few things on India Navigation and that's about it. Enjoy his playing on those older sides but it's rarely mind-altering (for me).
  12. I'd heard the name but never consciously checked out any of his music. It's pretty swell, at least judging by this track.
  13. I really like the Moncur & Tolliver sets as well.
  14. Lucky dog. It is also the title of a great Barouh film shot in Brazil. Ah, good to know. I watch so little film it's criminal.
  15. Dang - the only trumpeters I can think of that Joe recorded with in the 70s are Hubbard and Woody Shaw. It doesn't sound like Woody to me, but then again I've probably listened less to him than some others on the board.
  16. I'm going with my less-obscure guess on #8 and say that it's Freddie Hubbard. If Henderson & Clarke are in the mix, it could be something like this, though the date is a little later.
  17. Yeah, thought it might be Frisell, but I don't know that kind of music very well.
  18. Saravah Samba - I mean, the tune was played by Barouh in "A Man and a Woman," but other than the fact that it was later the name of his label, I know nothing about the reason for the name. Wertman is a "free jazz" bass player - no relation to anything Barouh!
  19. David Wertman - Kara Suite - (Mustevic)
  20. Track 8 reminded me a little of some of Hannibal's playing, less bright however. I can't recall him and Clarke recording together, though, save for with Pharoah. The Von track was deep; languid, but deep. My guess is it's something off of Birth Sign, which I don't own but would like to. I like #10 but I can't for the life of me figure out who the trombonist is. First pass had me thinking maybe Marty Cook, but I don't think it's him.
  21. #7 Robin Kenyatta - "You Know How We Do" from Until (Rudd - trombone; Mike Lawrence - trumpet; Horacee Arnold - drums; Lewis Worrell & Don Moore - bass; Archie Lee - perc.) I've always liked the tune & recognized it immediately from the theme! Carisi is a good guess from #6, I was trying to place it. Don't know personnel yet - have to give more listens. I'm up through 7 right now and am enjoying it very much!
  22. I'm getting a little tired of these reports... RIP.
  23. Cecil Taylor - The Early Unit 1962 - (Ingo)
  24. Wow, thanks for the story/info, and welcome to the board!
